Baby boy in critical condition after near-drowning at Sungai Petani homestay

SUNGAI PETANI: A trip to attend a wedding turned into a nightmare for a woman and her family when she found her baby unconscious in a swimming pool at a homestay here yesterday.
The 11-month-old infant, along with his parents and several relatives, had been staying at the homestay since May 1 to attend a family wedding in Tikam Batu.
After returning from the wedding at around 3pm yesterday, the boy was resting in a room with his grandparents, separate from his parents' room.
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the boy's mother noticed that both the main door and the bedroom door were open.
"She went to check and found her son floating unconscious in the pool at around 5pm," he said in a statement today.
The mother immediately administered CPR while waiting for an ambulance.
The boy was semi-conscious upon arrival at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here and was later transferred to Penang Hospital for further treatment.
He remains in critical condition and has been placed under sedation at Penang Hospital.
Wan Azharuddin said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect.
"Investigations are ongoing, and statements have been recorded from those involved."
