When Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun first met in the lab of Robert Horvitz at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, none of them could have known that each would go on to earn a Nobel Prize. Horvitz's came first in 2002, for discovering the genes that instruct organs how to develop, and in 2024, Ambros and Ruvkun together earned the Prize for discovering microRNA—work that began in Horvitz's lab.
Both were fascinated with how a single cell, a fertilized egg, turns into the complex organisms that define the entire plant and animal kingdoms. Their discoveries came from the humble worm—specifically, a genetic aberration that prevented the worm from developing past a juvenile state. The culprit, they found, was an unusually small snippet of RNA, which they called microRNA (miRNA). These tiny pieces of RNA worked like a 'knob to turn up or down to get more or less protein,' says Ambros. That's similar but not identical to the mRNA that most people are familiar with from their role in the COVID-19 vaccines. miRNA, they found, works in parallel to mRNA as an additional layer of control that cells have over which genes are turned on or off, and at what levels.
At first, they thought miRNAs might be unique to the worm. But they found them throughout animal and plant species. It turns out that this system helps complex organisms create and refine specialized cells. 'The idea is that by having various layers of control [over genes], you now have a much broader repertoire, like an orchestra,' Ruvkun says. MiRNAs mean 'the difference between one instrument vs. the whole orchestra.'
The potential of their discovery is tremendous. With greater knowledge about how genes are controlled throughout development, researchers can start to think about modifying those instructions to address processes that go awry in disease, or even improve agricultural yield or address pests. Others have since discovered dozens of miRNAs in the worm, plants, and humans. 'There was a chance that this little worm might have been doing something so weird,' says Ruvkun. 'Fortunately for us, that wasn't the case.'

Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — An increased number of measles cases is spreading across the country, with one case being reported in Meade County earlier this week. Public safety alert issued for 'dangerous subject' at large The current cases of Measles started from people who have come back to the country from international travels where measles is endemic. 'The virus is taking hold in communities where vaccination rates are low and that's the really tough thing, measles is incredibly contagious. Experts estimate that we need to have a 95% vaccination rate or better in order to prevent outbreaks from taking hold,' Monument Health Pediatrician Dr. Paula Marsland said. These percentages have dropped to around 90% across the country. Medical professionals are recommending the MMR vaccine (Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccination), something that has remained the same for the past 50 years. 'It's not hanging out in animals, it's hanging out in humans. And so as we try to eradicate it, the only way to do that is to stop the transmission of human to human. That's why I mentioned previously, it's highly contagious. Measles is three times more contagious than the Flu, than Covid, than Ebola,' Dr. Marsland said. The last time this many cases happened in the country was back in 2019, when over 1,200 cases were reported for the entire year. 'And then once symptoms show up, folks are infectious from roughly four or five days before the rash starts to four days after the rash starts. So that's a good eight to nine-day period where they are infectious. So certainly if you had somebody with a positive measles case, we'd want them to quarantine until at least four days after the rash started,' Dr. Marsland said. Currently, there have been over 1,100 cases this year, with over two-thirds being in people ages 19 and younger. The measles vaccine is typically given between 12-15 months of age with the second dose of MMR given in the range of 4-6 years of age. Saharan Dust makes its way towards the United States; Will the Triad be impacted?
(WGHP) – A plume of dust from the Sahara desert has been traveling across the Atlantic Ocean making its way to the United States over the last few days. NOAA's GOES-19 satellite has been tracking Saharan dust thousands of miles across the Atlantic from May 28 through June 2. It's common to see plumes of dust from the Saharan desert cross the Atlantic. Typically, the dust gets 'kicked up' into the atmosphere over the Sahara in the late spring, summer and early fall as monsoon season gets started just south of the Saharan desert. The peak of the Saharan dust season is in late June to mid-August, just before the peak of hurricane season, which occurs from mid-August through mid-October. One reason the Triad didn't see high impacts from the most recent plume of dust is due to the weather pattern over our area of the country. The coastal low-pressure system that is bringing rain to the Piedmont Triad on Thursday is helping to keep the dust south of us, creating a bigger impact for those to our south, like Florida and even as far west as Texas. Helene's impact on transportation in western North Carolina details in new report Saharan dust is nothing new. It happens every year around this time. When storms form just south of the Sahara Desert in the Sahel region of Africa, dry, dusty air from the Sahara Desert is kicked up into the atmosphere. This dust can collect in the atmosphere about 5,000 to 20,000 feet above the desert in a 2.5-mile-thick layer known as the Saharan Air Layer. Well, in that layer above the surface are the trade winds, also known as the Harmattan wind. The Harmattan wind sends the dust into the African Easterly Jet that blows from the West Coast of Africa to the United States and carries the dust thousands of miles across the ocean. As that dust moves over the Atlantic, it suppresses tropical cyclone development. The suppression of tropical development is due to the dry, strong winds associated with the Saharan dust, and it 'chokes out' any moisture of tropical cyclones that try to develop. Tropical cyclones need warm, moist air, and the dryness of the dust can cut off the supply of warm, moist air and limit tropical cyclone development in the Atlantic as the dust moves across the ocean. While suppressing tropical cyclone development is one of the main ways that Saharan dust impacts weather conditions, it can also have effects across the United States once it arrives. A few of the impacts include lowered air quality, lowered visibility or haziness and more vibrant sunrises or sunsets. Saharan dust particles are very tiny, and, when sun filters through the particles, it scatters the sunlight even more and allows longer wavelength colors like oranges and reds to reach through and be more intense. The result is more vibrant sunrises and sunsets. However, during the day, the dust makes the sky appear hazy and lowers our typical clear visibility of light blue dust particles in the atmosphere also impact our air quality, so those with any respiratory issues will typically be impacted more when the dust has made its way across the Atlantic. The Saharan dust season has just begun and we'll likely see several more rounds of it as we head through the next few months. MRNA, Used in Covid Shots, May Help Rid the Body of H.I.V.
The technology that powered Covid vaccines may also lead scientists to a cure for H.I.V. Using mRNA, Australian researchers said they were able to trick the virus to come out of hiding, a crucial step in ridding the body of it entirely. The research, published last week in Nature Communications, is still preliminary, and so far, has been shown to be successful only in a lab. But it suggests that mRNA has potential far beyond its use in vaccines as a means to deliver therapies against stubborn adversaries. Short for messenger RNA, mRNA is a set of instructions for a gene. In the case of Covid vaccines, the instructions were for a piece of the coronavirus. In the new study, they are for molecules key to targeting H.I.V. 'mRNA is just this miraculous — I really do think miraculous — tool to deliver things that you want into places that were not possible before,' said Dr. Sharon Lewin, director of the Cumming Global Center for Pandemic Therapeutics in Melbourne, who led the study. Vaccines deploying mRNA instruct the body to produce a fragment of the virus, which then sets off the body's immune response. In the United States, the shots were initially hailed for turning back the pandemic, then viewed by some with suspicion and fear. Some officials, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have falsely said that they are highly dangerous and even deadly. Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services sought to limit the vaccine's availability to pregnant women, children and healthy younger adults.
