No 'hidden' power tariff hikes, says Sabah Energy Commission

The Star2 days ago

KOTA KINABALU: There are no hidden increases in electricity charges in Sabah, says the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS).
In a statement on Tuesday (June 24), ECoS stressed that the tariff structure and rates have not been revised since the last revision in 2014.
It also said the tariff structure and rate schedule for Sabah and Labuan, effective since Jan 1, 2014, can be obtained from Sabah Electricity's website.
Its statement came after Parti Warisan's Kota Kinabalu division information chief Samuel Wong claimed that there were hidden increases in electricity tariffs through the tiered rate structure.
'Consumers are assured that they will only be charged the rate of 47 sen per kilowatt-hour for consumption above 1,000 units, meaning monthly bills above RM383. This has been in effect since Jan 1, 2014,' ECoS said.

It said that Wong or any concerned citizen may present any unusual bills that do not follow gazetted tariff blocks and rates to ECoS for investigation.
'If there is any error or negligence on the part of Sabah Electricity, ECoS will investigate and rectify accordingly.
'In the interests of transparency and accountability, ECoS encourages the public to use its official complaints and clarification platform, Talk2ECoS, especially in cases where consumers are unable to receive adequate responses from licensees such as Sabah Electricity,' it added.
ECoS said it was committed to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair electricity pricing, while continuing to support efforts that strengthen the reliability and sustainability of Sabah's power supply.
Earlier, Wong called on the government to address what he claimed were hidden tariff hikes in Sabah through a quietly restructured tiered billing system.
He said that although the state recently announced a six-month waiver of the electricity surcharge under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, Sabahans were still experiencing rising bills because of a more complicated and punishing tier structure.
He said while the government said there was no surcharge, consumer bills told a different story via subtle changes to how electricity usage was charged, calling it a disguised price hike.
Wong said that in 2022, there were five usage tiers ranging from RM0.175 to RM0.450 per 100 units but by this year, the structure expanded to seven tiers, with a new highest rate of RM0.470 per 100 units.

Pan Merchant sees opportunities in wastewater treatment, sustainable fuel sectors

PETALING JAYA: ACE Market newcomer Pan Merchant Bhd, a provider of solid-liquid filtration solutions, is prioritising emerging industries such as wastewater treatment and sustainable fuel to drive business growth and expand untapped markets. Managing director Wong Voon Ten said the company sees rising demand for sustainable fuel solutions from major energy players, driven by the global push towards decarbonisation and cleaner energy sources. 'In Malaysia and across the Asia-Pacific region, we also see significant opportunities in water treatment projects, especially as governments and water service providers continue to increase capital expenditure to upgrade water infrastructure. 'On top of that, we are actively tendering for projects to sustain our earnings growth. 'Currently, our tender book has grown to a substantial level, with more than half derived from the potable water and wastewater treatment industry, while the remainder comprises projects from edible oil, sustainable fuel, and other industries,' he said at the company's listing ceremony on Bursa Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today. Wong said the company remains committed to its core strength in the edible oil industry. 'As a trusted and irreplaceable partner to our end-users, we are recognised for our consistent quality and reliability, and we will continue to play a vital role in supporting refineries and processing operations. We are also focused on expanding our presence in strategic regions where edible oil production is critical,' he added. Wong emphasised the significant potential and growing demand for solid-liquid filtration solutions in the water treatment and sustainable fuel industries, expressing confidence in the group's ability to secure projects in such industries, backed by its 38-year track record of product quality and reliability. As of April 30, the group's potential project pipeline spans key industries, with the largest portion coming from the potable water and wastewater treatment segment, followed by projects in edible oil, sustainable fuel, mining, food processing, and other industrial segments. Pan Merchant's share price opened at 23.5 sen compared to the initial price offering (IPO) price of 27 sen per share. It closed at 23 sen, 4 sen or 14.8% below the IPO price, on 5.576 million shares traded. The company's IPO entailed a public issue of 232.2 million new shares and an 18 million offer-for-sale shares, at an issue price of 27 sen per share, representing 27.3% of the enlarged share capital. The overall value of the IPO is RM67.6 million, with Pan Merchant receiving RM62.7 million and the offeror receiving the remaining RM4.9 million. Out of the total proceeds of RM62.7 million, RM28 million will be used for capital expenditure on manufacturing plants, including the acquisition of machinery, equipment, and tools, as well as the renovation of its manufacturing facilities. A further RM7 million will be allocated for product development, and the remaining RM27.7 million for business expansion, working capital, and defraying of listing expenses. Pan Merchant plans to use part of its IPO proceeds to acquire advanced computer numerical control and robotic welding machines, which are expected to enhance production efficiency, to meet the growing demand for filtration equipment and replacement parts both locally and internationally. As of May 6, the group's order book stood at RM69.6 million, comprising orders for filtration equipment, replacement parts, and steel works. The order book is expected to be fulfilled within the next 12 months. Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd serves as the principal adviser, sponsor, sole placement agent, and sole underwriter for Pan Merchant's IPO exercise.

Cambodia Airways launches direct Phnom Penh-Penang flights

GEORGE TOWN: Cambodia Airways has launched its inaugural direct flight from Phnom Penh to Penang, marking a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity and strengthening ties between Malaysia and Cambodia. Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai highlighted the importance of the new route, especially as Malaysia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year. 'This flight creates a new aerial link between Penang and Cambodia, reinforcing Penang's role in the regional aviation network,' Wong said. Cambodia becomes the sixth ASEAN country with direct flights to Penang, joining Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The new route is also expected to boost Penang's MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) tourism sector. 'Better air connectivity benefits business travellers and professionals, solidifying Penang's position as a regional MICE hub,' Wong added. He noted that while Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore currently lead the ASEAN MICE market, competition is intensifying with cities like Bangkok and Jakarta investing heavily in convention infrastructure. 'Penang must leverage this momentum by expanding ASEAN connectivity and attracting high-profile events to strengthen its presence in the regional MICE ecosystem,' he said. The inaugural flight departed Phnom Penh International Airport at 8.05 am and arrived at Penang International Airport at 10.31 am, receiving a traditional water salute. The service will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau director Lee Boon Heng, representing Wong, welcomed the new route, emphasising its potential to boost tourism and economic growth. 'This flight provides Penangites easier access to Cambodia's cultural heritage and emerging travel experiences,' Lee said. Also present at the event were Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Shaharuddin Onn and Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.
