SEWA implements over 19 energy transmission projects in 2024
The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has completed a number of strategic projects that have enhanced energy transmission capabilities and stabilised the electrical grid, with more than 19 projects accomplished in 2024. This initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to improve energy infrastructure and enhance network efficiency.
Hamad Al-Taniji, Director of the Energy Transmission Department, noted that several projects have been successfully completed in 2024, contributing to the development of electrical grid infrastructure and providing high-quality services that meet future needs.
He emphasised the authority's commitment to achieving further excellence and innovation, ensuring the reliability of the electrical network in line with future developments and achieving the highest levels of performance and efficiency.
The executed projects included the 220 kV Airport Station, the dynamic development project at Al-Tay Station for energy transmission, and other initiatives aimed at improving electrical transmission efficiency at Wasit, Al-Shanouf, and Al-Ghubayba stations. Additionally, upgrades and modernisation of current transformers at several main stations were carried out to ensure operational stability.
Partial discharge detection systems (GIS PD) were also installed at both the Sports Centre Station and Al-Liyah 132 kV Station, enhancing the reliability of the electrical system. Furthermore, the project to lower overhead lines in the areas of Al-Ma'ahid, Al-Hoshi, and Al-Tay was implemented to support the Union Train project, a pivotal step in promoting sustainable transportation.
Abdullah Al-Kous, Deputy Director of the Energy Transmission Department, stated that in 2024, several energy transmission stations were completed and operational, including Al-Jadah - 3 (33/11 kV), Souq Haraj - 2 (33/11 kV), and Al-Madina - 3 (33/11 kV), which supply the Al-Milihah Dairy Project and nearby projects. The network modifications in the Al-Milihah area to connect to Al-Madina Station, Al-Rahmaniyah - 4 (33/11 kV), and Al-Falah - 1 (33/11 kV) were also accomplished, along with network modifications in Al-Tay.
The project to connect the Al-Hawel Emirates building using the advanced connection system (33/0.415 kV) was completed, improving electrical protection systems and making adjustments to transmission and distribution systems to ensure higher efficiency and greater reliability.
He added that the authority's energy transmission plan for 2025 focuses on a set of strategic objectives, including expanding on previous successes, leveraging acquired expertise in future project implementation, integrating the latest technologies in energy transmission processes to enhance performance and operations, and fostering collaboration among different teams to ensure projects are executed effectively and efficiently.
Additionally, the temporary station for the Al-Qutayna area (33/11 kV) will be operational.

SEWA launches 10 lighting projects in Kalba
Key projects underway Engineer Youssef Al Hammadi, Director of SEWA's Kalba Department, confirmed that the authority is executing development and lighting works according to a defined timeline, following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah . Additional work is being carried out in the Ghail area, including the installation of 400 lighting units and 250 poles, alongside 15,000 metres of electrical cables . Upgrades are also taking place on Kalba–Sharjah Road, Lake Street, and within the University District, where 1,400 traditional lights are being replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures . The authority's lighting efforts in Kalba also include the implementation of an annual maintenance programme for the city's lighting network, as well as a dedicated project to improve lighting in the residential area of Al Qadisiya . Completed projects Several lighting projects have been completed in recent months. One of the most notable is the lighting of Khatmit Al Malaha Road, finished in April 2025, which included the installation of 100 lights, 50 poles, and 7,000 metres of cabling. Another completed project is the lighting of Saad bin Abi Waqqas Street, which saw the installation of 100 lights, 60 poles, and 10,000 metres of electric cable . These initiatives reflect SEWA's continued commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and enhanced public safety across Kalba .

Sharjah expands power grid, replaces overhead electric cables in some rural areas
Sharjah's power grid has undergone a major expansion across the central region — energising more than 15 key locations in a move aimed at boosting reliability and meeting the growing electricity needs of emerging residential and economic zones. The project by Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) saw the installation of over 81.7km of high- and low-voltage cables, covering areas such as Al Dhaid, Madam, Maliha, and Al Bataeh. It forms part of SEWA's plan to modernise infrastructure in non-coastal areas and improve efficiency by reducing power loss across the network. The works are part of a larger shift to provide more dependable and high-capacity electricity services outside city centres. 'We are witnessing steady development in the central region, and our role is to ensure the power network grows with it. This isn't a temporary fix. 'This is about providing equal service to all areas of Sharjah — urban or rural,' he added. The central region, once considered peripheral, has seen a steady rise in development with new housing projects, agricultural ventures, and public facilities. SEWA's infrastructure expansion is aligned with Sharjah's broader vision for sustainable and inclusive growth across the emirate. Looking ahead, SEWA plans to install more distribution substations and complete the removal of all remaining overhead lines in the central region by 2026, Al Tunaiji confirmed.
