‘It's a dream… I can't wait': Zinedine Zidane on taking over French national team's coaching role

Indian Express2 days ago

Footballing great and French veteran Zinedine Zidane said it would be a 'dream' job taking over the coaching duties of the France national team. The 52-year-old is reportedly set to succeed as the coach of France after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This development came after the Les Bleus' long-time coach Didier Deschamps announced his departure post the 2026 World Cup set to be played in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Deschamps has been in charge of the French side since 2012 and has led the French national team to the World Cup title in 2018 and the final in 2022.
'I feel qualified for the French team, where I played and spent practically 12, 13, 14 years as a player. Of course it's a dream. I can't wait,' said Zidane as the French media reported.
'I feel 100 per cent ready to coach. Of course, it's a desire. But there's a coach, there's a team, and we have to respect everything, and that's what we do. But when the time comes, it will be a great pleasure if the opportunity presents itself,' he added, as was quoted by Marca.
Zidane also praised the 17-year-old Spanish and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. 'When you see him play, for example, the semi-final against Inter Milan. I've never seen anything like that in my life. Just watch someone who has such a command of his craft on the pitch. It's fabulous to see him like that. We all had fun with him, and that's why, for all these young players, Lamine is the one to watch,' said the former captain of France, Zidane, who led his country to the World Cup title in 1998.
Yamal, at such a young age, has astonishing talent. He has already won the Euro Cup with the Spanish national team in 2024, where they beat England 2-1 in the final. Yamal was the young player of the tournament. This season, he has won the domestic treble with Barca after winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup alongside a creditable semifinal run in the UEFA Champions League before losing 7-6 in a two-leg thriller against Inter Milan.

Hardik's India numbers better than at MI; but Rinku Singh, Naman Dhir, Shashank Singh & Dhruv Jurel all in contention to complete finishers' cohort

Indian cricket is currently contending with two distinct versions of Hardik Pandya. His international avatar is closer to his younger self, an unforgiving slugger and finisher in the death overs. Despite the odd blips, Hardik has topped his T20I challenges since last year, even when the IPL circuit hasn't been exactly kind to him. The middle-order cavalry around Hardik could be in flux on India's road to the 2026 T20 World Cup. While none can challenge Hardik's spot, India will be looking to nail in a few spots besides him, between Nos. 5-8 for fool-proof slog-overs smashing, with spin all-rounder Axar Patel likely cementing another slot. While one keeps a tab on these other contenders, Hardik's curious 'death-overs degeneration' in the IPL springs a faintly distending concern. The Mumbai Indians captain fronted pace at the death (17-20) in seven innings this IPL season. While he has smote 11 boundaries, Hardik isn't as lethal with the blade as he used to be, averaging 15 against the seamers after being dismissed five times in 39 deliveries. Wearing a slightly recalibrated batting role since his Gujarat Titans stint in 2022, Hardik's presence has diminished at the death. It takes the output of the four seasons put together for Hardik's slog-overs numbers to overtake all Indian batters in the league since last year. While none have nearly embraced the death-overs specialism with consistency since MS Dhoni's heyday in the league, Shashank Singh is catching up with the best in the phase from 2024 onwards. The Punjab Kings batter arguably holds the best death-over aggregates among all Indian bats in the period. In his IPL second wind, the 33-year-old Shashank has racked up 287 runs at the death, nearly 44 percent of his overall runs in the two seasons. Only four batters have registered more runs in this phase in this time, with no Indian scoring more runs at a better strike rate than Shashank's 212.21. Bashing both left-arm and right-arm pacers with a 200-plus SR, Shashank adds 15-20 runs more than the average batter against the quicks at the death. Shashank's profile nearly eclipses Hardik's 2022-25 haul – 305 runs at a 172.24 SR – single-handedly. Hardik's diminishing returns against seam are glaring when placed against his 2019 self, the best year for any Indian death-overs finisher in the IPL. Since last season, Hardik has struck at 175.81 at the death, comparatively higher on dot ball percentages and weaker in digging out the right-arm seamers. His 148.84 SR against right-arm pace puts him behind the average batter in the phase by nearly 15 runs. In the preceding two seasons between 2022-23, Hardik slumped against the left-arm quicks, struggling to pace himself past an odd and off-putting 76.47 SR, nearly 56 runs fewer than the average bat. Curiously, Hardik in the Indian blues, flips the scales entirely with his performances demanding top-tier status. India's highest-ever run-scorer in the T20I slog-overs at 904 runs in 60 outings, Hardik has gathered nearly 22.4 percent (203) of those in 13 innings since 2024. Striking at 181.25, no batter from Full-Member sides has topped him in the period. While he juggles between the intricately different roles, Hardik is poised to deliver on the international stage, veering the focus towards his potential T20I middle-order/death-overs associates. Variances in their striking efficacies place Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh under the scanner. Despite matching Hardik's death-overs SR for India since 2024, Dube and Rinku's underwhelming recent runs will magnify their shortcomings in a growing pool of designated death-overs hitters. With Dube generally holding the No. 5 spot and a larger presence in the middle-overs, India's No. 7, behind Hardik, could warrant a few auditions. Reduced to a cameo man with the Kolkata Knight Riders despite his spectacular IPL 2023 season, Rinku's depleted game time will not likely affect his advantage for the role, but there are new challengers on board. Rinku's 99 runs at the death this season aren't eye-popping by any means. His 235.71 SR, though, hasn't been overhauled by any of the 13 batters who have aggregated 100-plus runs in the phase. *includes players available for T20Is There is promise in the finishing spurts of Naman Dhir (132 runs and 206.25) and Ashutosh Sharma (115 runs at 185.48), and others behind Shashank (162 at 197.56) in the leaderboard this season. The lack of a certified second dimension in their respective skill sets places the trio, alongside Rinku, in a tricky race for a position in India's revamping T20I lower order. Wicket-keepers Dhruv Jurel and Jitesh Sharma could enter the fray in this regard. Hardik's wavering splits could disrupt the comforts of the expendable No. 7 before a home World Cup next summer. Rinku will lead the bid, but India have a few more veritable guns to scope out in the road ahead.

Champions League: Why Inter Milan will wear Gold kit for UCL final vs PSG?

Inter Milan will take the field in their vibrant third kit—golden yellow shirts with black detailing and black shorts—for the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich this Saturday. This decision marks a historic first, as Inter has never worn their third-choice strip in any of their previous six finals, dating back to their debut in 1964. With PSG designated as the home side, the French champions will don their traditional kit featuring navy blue shirts and shorts, with a signature red and white vertical stripe. This leaves Inter unable to wear their iconic black and blue striped home jersey. Rather than turning to their standard away strip—white with blue accents—Inter has chosen the bold golden third kit for the occasion. The choice might not be purely logistical. Superstition could be playing a role, as Inter boasts a perfect record in the Champions League this season when wearing the yellow kit. They claimed a 1-0 win away at Sparta Prague in January and followed it with another victory in the round-of-16 first leg against Feyenoord in March—both while dressed in yellow. Conversely, their only defeat in the competition came in December against Bayer Leverkusen when they wore the white away kit. This eye-catching yellow kit has already brought success in Europe this season, and manager Simone Inzaghi and his players may be hoping it continues to bring good fortune on the biggest stage. With high stakes and history on the line, Inter's choice to wear their third kit adds an extra layer of intrigue to an already anticipated final.

Real Madrid Announce Signing Of Trent Alexander-Arnold From Liverpool

English star Trent Alexander-Arnold has joined Real Madrid, following the decision to not renew his contract with boyhood club Liverpool. After 20 years as a part of Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold will move to the Spanish giants ahead of this summer's Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold said leaving Liverpool was the "most difficult decision" in his life, but joining Real Madrid is usually one of the easiest to make. The record 15-time Champions League winners are the world's most successful club and joining them as a player is widely viewed as reaching the pinnacle of the game. In 2003, Madrid signed David Beckham from Manchester United -- a player Alexander-Arnold has sometimes been likened to for his passing range and crossing ability. "It's not the case that other teams are bad, it's just that Real Madrid are the greatest," England international Jude Bellingham said after he joined from Dortmund in 2023. The presence of Bellingham, a compatriot and close friend, certainly increased Madrid's appeal for Alexander-Arnold whose highly-anticipated arrival was formally announced on Friday. The Liverpool academy graduate won it all at Anfield but his chances of winning silverware more regularly are boosted with Los Blancos, so he took the risk of leaving his boyhood club. From Madrid's perspective, securing Alexander-Arnold's services on a six-year deal also seemed an obvious step to take. With Dani Carvajal, 33, injured for much of the season, right-back has been a problem position. Fede Valverde and the departing Lucas Vazquez have played there even though it is not their natural role. Carvajal will be back next season but after his serious knee injury and given his age, whether he will return at the same level is uncertain. Alexander-Arnold, 26, is expected to form part of Madrid's squad for years to come. The defender's arrival fits Madrid's recent approach of using their super-club status to hire 'Galactico' level stars at the end of their contracts. French striker Kylian Mbappe's arrival from Paris Saint-Germain last summer is the prime example, while Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba also joined without a transfer fee. Alexander-Arnold has the attacking range to delight Madrid's demanding fans, who love full-backs with a penchant for the spectacular, including Marcelo and Roberto Carlos. The Liverpudlian, a set-piece expert, has also been used in midfield by England which is an area where Madrid have struggled since Toni Kroos' departure last summer. Sweetening the pot is Alexander-Arnold's association with Liverpool's 4-0 thrashing of Madrid's arch-rivals Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-finals. The defender created his team's vital fourth goal after a 3-0 away defeat, with a corner taken quickly to catch out Barca's defence and tee up Divock Origi to score. "When I got to those big occasions, I felt like that's where I belonged," Alexander-Arnold told FourFourTwo. "Those sorts of games naturally demand you to play the best that you can and think on the spot, and have those moments of brilliance –- I was able to come up with one." Defensive doubts British players have not always found it easy to adapt to life in the Spanish capital. Welshman Gareth Bale was hugely successful at Madrid and yet still ended up as a scapegoat, while England internationals Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate never completely found their footing. Bellingham hit the ground running however, leading Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double in his first campaign, and can help Alexander-Arnold fit in. The biggest concerns around Alexander-Arnold's arrival relate to his defensive aptitude. At times for Liverpool and England he has been criticised for switching off, allowing wingers to drift behind him unchecked. Madrid's defensive line has suffered this season as they ended up without a major trophy. If new coach Xabi Alonso sticks to the 3-4-3 system he used at Bayer Leverkusen, Alexander-Arnold could thrive in the right wing-back role. "Because he is so special with the ball, the main emphasis goes on him doing special things with the ball," explained Liverpool coach Arne Slot in September. "I think with him it is not about if he is capable of doing things, it's more -- can his concentration rate constantly be at 100 percent focus?" It would not be the first time Madrid have signed a player fuelled by optimism over their potential, rather than a more measured approach to squad-building. In Alexander-Arnold's case, though, there is plenty to suggest this union will suit both club and player.
