Fugitive capybara caught by zoo after two months on run
Capybaras are native to South America but in recent years have become popular attractions at zoos worldwide.
Officials have captured the last member of a runaway capybara gang that escaped from a zoo in eastern China two months ago.
The missing female rodent, named "Doubao" - "Bean Bun" in Chinese - absconded from an enclosure at the Yangzhou Zhuyuwan Scenic Area along with two other capybaras in early April.
Doubao remained at large for weeks after her companions were caught by zoo officials.
"The runaway child has returned home!" the zoo wrote in a social media post.
The capybara walked into a humane trap early Tuesday morning and was returned to her enclosure by zoo staff.
Despite spending two months on the run, Doubao gained weight and her fur was still "smooth and glossy", the zoo said. "It looks like she was doing well out there!" it added.
A video published by the zoo showed Doubao sniffing around a cage and pawing at its sides while a person can be heard saying "welcome home Doubao".
Capybaras are native to South America but in recent years have become popular attractions at zoos worldwide, with the semi-aquatic rodents becoming unlikely darlings of the internet.
The zoo said the trio made their April breakout when another capybara Bazong - "Big Shot" - broke through a fence. Bazong was later found relaxing in a lake.
It took seven or eight zoo staff to trap the second accomplice, Duoduo or "Hide Hide", in a rubbish bin.
But Doubao eluded capture, with the zoo in May issuing a mock wanted poster accusing her of engaging in a mass jailbreak.
Officials at one point offered a reward of frozen fried rice, a carton of eggs, capybara-themed merchandise and lifetime entry to the zoo to anyone with information about her whereabouts. | AFP

"These officers appear to be irresponsible and negligent, and it has been decided to suspend them," Siddaramaiah said. The dead were mostly young fans, aged between 14 and 29, who were among a sea of people who had poured onto the streets to catch a glimpse of their heroes. RCB offered financial aid of $11,655 to each family of those killed, calling the deaths "unfortunate". Indian media have widely reported the team earned $2.3 million in prize money alone for taking the title on Wednesday. Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was "at a loss for words" after celebrations of a dream IPL crown turned to tragedy. New search in Madeleine McCann case finished: Portuguese police
A new search launched this week into the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann ended Thursday, said police in Portugal, where she went missing 18 years ago. Investigators, who spent three days scouring areas near the southern beach resort where Madeleine disappeared during a family holiday, did not detail the results of their latest searches. Madeleine was just three years old when she vanished from the apartment where her family was vacationing on the Algarve coast, triggering a race to find her -- and massive global media coverage. The new search, which began Tuesday, was carried out at the request of investigators in Germany, who are probing whether a convicted German sex offender was implicated in the disappearance. Between Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon, around 25 German police officers assisting Portuguese authorities searched for evidence near the Praia da Luz seaside resort, where Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, while her parents had dinner nearby. Using shovels, rakes and a weed whip, investigators combed an overgrown wooded area bordered by several dilapidated, abandoned houses between Praia da Luz and the nearby city of Lagos, said AFP journalists at the scene. They also used ground-penetrating radar and an excavator to search another area around the village of Atalaia, Portuguese media reports said. A previous search in 2023 of a lake near the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz yielded no results. Police on Wednesday afternoon "received information that a man was found lying on his back in the lift (shaft) on the ground floor of a (building) construction site," Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said in a statement. Fire and rescue services recovered the body, which was sent for a post mortem, he added. "The results found that the cause of death was a chest injury sustained from a fall from height," Rusdi said. "No criminal elements were found at the scene and the case has been classified as a sudden death report," he said, adding the body was identified by the victim's uncle based on a tattoo.
