Former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick 'must bounce back' from poor 2024 season
Dallas Turner didn't have the most impactful rookie season in 2024, leading some to question the Minnesota Vikings' decision to trade up and select him. That makes his 2025 season vital to his future.
The Vikings already have two Pro Bowl edge defenders, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard. That made it hard to get Turner on the field as much as fans expected heading into last season. But Brian Flores and the Vikings are expecting big things from the second-year defender.
This week, Matt Holder from PFF listed Turner among six 2024 first-round picks who need to have a bounce-back season to avoid the "bust" label. Holder acknowledges the obstacles Turner faced as a rookie, but says it's time for him to make a regular impact.
But it was a little shocking to see him only take 28 percent of the Minnesota Vikings' defensive snaps, per Pro Football Reference, and he could receive a similar workload this fall. . .Both starting edge defenders from last season return for the Vikings: Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard. . .Turner has an uphill battle to crack the starting lineup and could have a tough time seeing the field again.
Last week, Flores told the media that he doesn't view Turner as a backup, and instead views him as an equal to Van Ginkel and Greenard. Flores isn't one to hype a player up in front of the media, so maybe it's a sign that Turner is coming along.
But we still need to see Turner actually do it when the games count this season. Perhaps Flores is scheming ways to get him on the field without taking Van Ginkel and Greenard off.
No matter how it happens, the Vikings paid a hefty price to land Turner. That means they need to see results sooner rather than later.

Rookie TE Terrance Ferguson compared to former Rams star
Terrance Ferguson joins a crowded tight end room but could quickly emerge as the best of the group. The second-round rookie was drafted higher than any other tight end on the Los Angeles Rams, and FOX Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang compared him to another great Rams tight end not named Tyler Higbee — Ernie Conwell. "... Ferguson would go a long way in legitimizing the 46th overall selection by pushing him for playing time as a rookie," Rang wrote. "Conwell offered similarly sure hands down the seam and was a better blocker. The Rams have never had a tight end voted to the Pro Bowl, but Ferguson flashes that kind of upside." Conwell, a second-round pick himself in 1996, caught 146 passes for 1,574 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven years for the Rams. He went on to finish his career with the New Orleans Saints for four seasons. Higbee is actually the Rams' best receiving tight end in team history with 3,668 yards and 24 touchdowns, but Conwell was a more well-rounded player that Rang believes fits a franchise comparison for Ferguson. The hope for L.A. is that the rookie can be the best of both worlds as a great pass-catcher and blocker for the Rams. The team has lacked a true star at the position, and Ferguson could blaze his own path as a franchise tight end for the Rams.

Dan Orlovsky cannot stop talking about one Minnesota Vikings player ahead of 2025
Dan Orlovsky may not have been the quarterback he had hoped to be in the NFL, but he has more than made up for it as an analyst and in how he now teaches the game to others. The former UConn quarterback now works out of the same state he played college football in as an analyst for ESPN. As one of their lead football analysts, Orlovsky has the chance to talk about anyone and any team in the league. However, he has remained steadfast in his optimism about the Minnesota Vikings and J.J. McCarthy. Advertisement While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Orlovsky displayed a trademark smile when asked if he was still high on J.J. McCarthy heading into the 2025 season and training camp. The former NFL quarterback said, "I think he's gonna be awesome this year, honestly. I totally believe, production-wise, he'll play very similar to what Sam did last year. One, there's just a scheme and a roster talent — Minnesota's the easiest place in the NFL to play quarterback this year. It's as good an offensive roster as we have in the NFL. And then you combine it with scheme and play caller in Kevin O'Connell. . .I think J.J., the skills that he has and the foundation that he has, he's a play on rhythm, listen to his feet when it comes to where and when to throw the football, the timing of the way he plays the position. . .perfect for what is the necessary stuff playing that position in Minnesota." Beyond just the coaching and atmosphere of the Vikings, the roster isn't half bad either. The work of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and his staff this offseason has McCarthy stepping into the best situation of a first-time starter in the recent history of the NFL.
