Pornhub exits France over age verification law

CNN2 days ago

The owner of Pornhub has suspended access to its website in France because of its objections to a new French law requiring pornographic sites to verify the age of their users, the country's communications regulator said Tuesday.
Arcom, the regulator, said in a statement that adult entertainment company Aylo had chosen to 'shirk the requirement of protecting minors' enshrined digital regulations 'by suspending access to its content in France, including for adults.'
That's despite the 'numerous technical solutions on the market (allowing) users' age to be verified while ensuring the protection of their personal data,' the regulator added.
Aylo runs several pornography sites and is owned by Canadian private equity firm Ethical Capital Partners. Reuters cited a spokesperson for Pornhub on Tuesday as saying that Aylo had also suspended access in France to its sites YouPorn and Redtube.
In 2024, France accounted for the second-biggest audience for Pornhub on a daily basis behind the United States, according to the website.
Last year, France enacted a law mandating that pornographic sites implement stricter age-verification technology. That could include asking users to provide their bank card details, Arcom said in an October document detailing aspects of the law's implementation.
According to French newspaper Le Monde, Aylo has previously argued that users' ages should be checked from their device — such as their smartphone or computer — and should thus be the responsibility of tech companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft, rather than the pornography sites themselves.
Neither Aylo nor Ethical Capital Partners immediately responded to a request for comment from CNN.
Aurore Bergé, French gender equality minister, said in a post on X on Tuesday that Aylo's decision meant 'there will be less violent, degrading and humiliating content accessible to minors in France.'
'Pornhub, YouPorn, and Redtube refuse to comply with our legal framework and decide to leave. Good!' she said.
Around the world, jurisdictions are ramping up efforts to protect minors online.
In the United States, 19 states — home to more than a third of Americans — have in recent years passed laws requiring pornographic sites to confirm a user's age by checking a government-issued ID or scanning their face, among other methods.
The laws have led some of the largest adult sites, including Pornhub, to block users from those states, rather than paying millions for ID-checking services.
And, last week, the European Commission launched an investigation into Pornhub and three other major adult websites, accusing them of not complying with regulations designed to protect minors from accessing pornography.
The bloc's executive body said in a statement lat week that it is developing an age-verification app to allow people to prove they are older than 18 without revealing other information about themselves online.
Catherine Nicholls, Isabelle Chapman, Casey Tolan and Allison Morrow contributed reporting.

Bank of America predicts major housing market changes are coming soon

Homebuyers have faced an unpredictable housing market over the past few years. Rising home prices and stubborn mortgage rates have prompted many Americans to delay their plans for homeownership as they wait for housing conditions to improve. Broad economic uncertainty and the ongoing housing market gridlock have dampened buyer confidence, leaving the outlook for 2025 up in the air. Although housing inventory is finally increasing, weak demand could suppress housing sales. Don't miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet's FREE daily newsletter Sticky mortgage rates have shattered expectations for a strong housing rebound this year, but the overall market outlook is on the upswing from increased inventory and price deceleration. Though the second half of the year remains uncertain, many experts believe housing conditions will improve, potentially bringing an end to years of stagnation. Bank of America anticipates a few crucial shifts to watch this year. Image source: Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images Following years of stagnation in the housing market, 2025 was anticipated to bring notable improvements. However, persistent inflation, trade tensions, recession concerns, and financial instability have kept mortgage rates elevated, constraining home sales. Housing affordability is one of the biggest barriers to homeownership, and elevated mortgage rates and inflated home prices have made saving for a down payment and finding a home within budget more difficult. Bank of America recently released its 2025 Homebuyer Insights Report, and it found that buyers are softening on the housing market outlook, but still holding out for better conditions. More than half of prospective homebuyers believe the housing market is in a better position than it was a year ago. And while 75% of buyers expect mortgage rates and housing prices to improve in the next year, they are also holding off on purchasing a home until then. Head of Consumer Lending Matt Vernon notes that despite a challenging market, most buyers are planning to purchase a home in the future. "The uncertainty among homebuyers is real, but so is their resilience," he said. "Buyers are navigating a complex environment with rising costs, fluctuating rates, and mixed signals, but many are still planning ahead." First-time homeowners - predominantly Gen Z and Millennials - have struggled to buy a home amid rising prices and heightened competition. The average first-time homeowner age skyrocketed to 38 in 2024 as younger buyers were increasingly priced out of the housing market. In order to afford a home, younger buyers have been encouraged to lower their expectations and make concessions on their homeownership plans. "Even with the challenges they face, younger generations still understand the long-term value owning a home offers them, and many are doing what it takes to get there," Vernon continued. "They are finding creative ways to afford down payments and working hard to improve their financial futures." Though the housing market has been difficult for younger homebuyers to navigate, many remain hopeful that the market will turn around soon - and are finding innovative ways to tackle homeownership in the meantime. If Elon Musk's Wealth Was Evenly Distributed Across America, How Much Money Would Every Person Get?

We've seen the headlines that reveal how rich the world's top billionaires are — but it's hard to comprehend just how rich they are. Consider this: Let's say you had $1 billion in your bank account and had to spend $100,000 every day, for an entire year. After 365 days, you would still have $963,500,000 (nine hundred sixty-three million five hundred thousand). Discover More: Find Out: Over the last two decades, billionaires have ballooned their wealth to unparalleled levels. In 2005, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ranked as the world's richest person, with a net worth of $46.5 billion, as reported by CNN. Today, that title belongs to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose net worth stands at $368 billion as of June 5, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Even when adjusted for inflation, Gates' former net worth would be equivalent to roughly $76 billion in today's dollars. It is worth noting that other billionaires have also increased their wealth during the same time. For instance, tech billionaires Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos are worth $229 billion and $227 billion, ranking second and third globally. For many Americans, this trend is not sitting well. The sky-high cost of living has catalyzed support for redistributive tax policies, especially among younger voters and the progressive base of the Democratic Party. While higher taxation may or may not happen in the years to come, here's hypothetically how much you'd get if the world's richest man gives a check to every American. The United States Census Bureau estimates the current population to be around 341 million people, ranking only behind India and China. If Musk's enormous $368 billion were equally divided in the U.S., each person would receive $1,079 (rounded to the nearest dollar). A couple would receive $2,158, while a family of four would get $4,316. Despite the enormous wealth of billionaires, much of their fortune is tied up in stocks, real estate, and other holdings. Only a small percentage of their assets is held in cash. Based on data from Forbes, Musk has a 12% ownership stake in Tesla and to date, he remains the largest shareholder in the $1.15 trillion electric vehicle company. This is in addition to a 42% slice in SpaceX and a 54% interest in xAI, among many other businesses. Interestingly, Bloomberg reported that Musk's financial holdings appreciated by 77% after joining the campaign trail with President Donald Trump late last year, as reported by Bloomberg. Investors became bullish on Tesla and Musk became the first person to ever reach a net worth exceeding $400 billion. Since then, Tesla's market value has fluctuated as a result of volatile market conditions, macroeconomic factors and the threat of a global trade war.
