Carney govt seeks to build ties with India, says Canadian minister amid strained relations
Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand has said that Prime Minister Mark Carney's government looks forward to building its partnership with India as part of diversifying and building relationships globally, even as she acknowledged that pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing continues to cast a shadow on bilateral ties.
She said Ottawa was taking the relationship forward one step at a time. 'At the same time, we are looking forward to continuing to build this partnership, and we're looking forward to that as a Government – it's not just me,' Anand, an Indo-Canadian, told the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail. Anand emphasised that the rule of law will never be compromised.
The alleged links between Indian officials and the Nijjar's killing led to a diplomatic rift. The then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the Canadian House of Commons that there were 'credible allegations' of a potential link between Indian agents and the killing three months after Nijjar was murdered in June 2023 in British Columbia's Surrey. India dismissed the accusation as 'absurd' and 'motivated'. Four Indian nationals were arrested in connection with the murder last year.
Anand said that Nijjar's killing continues to impact the bilateral ties. 'We are certainly taking it one step at a time. As I mentioned, the rule of law will never be compromised, and there is an ongoing investigation regarding the [Nijjar] case that you mentioned.'
Anand echoed Carney about renewing the relationship with India. She added that the investigation into Nijjar's murder will continue under the auspices of an independent agency.
On May 25, Anand spoke to her Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar. She thanked him for the productive discussion on strengthening Canada–India ties, deepening economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. Anand said she looked forward to continuing their work together. Jaishankar said they discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties.
This was the first formal contact between the foreign ministers since February 2024, when Anand's predecessor, Mélanie Joly, met Jaishankar on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
The ministers remained in contact before Ottawa in October last year asked New Delhi to waive diplomatic immunity for six Indian officials posted in Canada so they could be questioned about 'violent criminal activity'.
New Delhi dismissed Ottawa's move to designate six officials as 'persons of interest' in the investigation and expelled six Canadian diplomats. India withdrew the six officials, including high commissioner Sanjay Verma.
There have been indications of a potential thaw in the ties after Carney became Prime Minister in March and appointed Anand as the foreign minister. Modi congratulated Carney as it became clear on April 29 that he would lead the new government in Ottawa.
In April, Carney called ties with India 'incredibly important' on many levels. 'On the personal level, with Canadians having deep personal ties, economically, strategically.'
Anand made a similar remark while seeking re-election from the Oakville East constituency in March. 'We will make sure we have strong ties with nations whose people have immigrated here and settled here, including my mother's and father's homeland of India.'
There has been little clarity on whether Canada will invite India and Modi as a partner country for the G7 summit in Alberta from June 15 to June 17. Carney is yet to publicly respond to Modi's congratulatory message.

Madras HC upholds TN govt online gaming rules
Chennai, June 3 (UNI) In a landmark judgment, the Madras High Court on Tuesday upheld the Tamil Nadu government's regulations on online real money gaming, rejecting multiple petitions filed by gaming companies and individuals challenging the state's right to impose such restrictions. A Division Bench comprising Mr Justices S.M. Subramaniam and K. Rajasekar ruled that the state has the constitutional authority to regulate online games in the interest of public health and safety. The court emphasized that the right to privacy is not absolute and that reasonable restrictions can be imposed to prevent social harm. The key provisions validated by the court include mandatory Aadhaar-based Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, a ban on playing online real money games between midnight and 5 a.m., and the enforcement of age and monetary limits for players. These measures, the government argued, are intended to curb gaming addiction, especially among youth. The petitioners—major gaming platforms like WinZO, Games24x7, Junglee Games, and Head Digital Works—contended that the rules were excessive and paternalistic. They also contended that the night-time ban and compulsory Aadhaar verification infringed on users' rights. The court, however, rejected these arguments, stating that the state must act when public welfare is at stake. This ruling could influence similar regulatory efforts in other Indian states and marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the legality and impact of online gaming platforms. It may be recalled several people in the State have ended their lives after losing large sums of money in only rummy and other games. UNI GV 1520

Sheikh Hasina's Secret Flight: Inside Ex-Bangladesh PM's Midnight Escape To India
Last Updated: Citing civil and military aviation sources, the newspaper reported that the change in flight path was a deliberate decision intended to avoid attention. A recent report published by The Daily Star, a Bangladeshi newspaper, shed light on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure from Dhaka on August 5, 2024. The report claimed that a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft carrying Sheikh Hasina was initially scheduled to land in Kolkata but was redirected mid-flight to the Hindon Air Force Station near Delhi. Military 'Training' Flight Used Citing civil and military aviation sources, the newspaper reported that the change in flight path was a deliberate decision intended to avoid attention amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh. The flight, designated as a military 'training flight," took off from the Bangabandhu Air Force Base in Dhaka shortly after 3 p.m. local time. First Destination Choice For Sheikh Hasina Was Kolkata Although a flight plan had been filed for Kolkata and shared with Indian authorities- including a transponder squawk code of 4131- the aircraft turned off its transponders after takeoff. This effectively removed the flight from civilian radar systems while maintaining communication with ground control for safety. The transponders were reactivated near the Bangladesh-India border, at which point Dhaka air traffic control handed the flight over to its counterpart in Kolkata, following standard airspace transition procedures. The Flight Landed In Delhi Then The aircraft appeared to be on course for Kolkata until shortly before crossing into Indian airspace when it changed direction toward Delhi. This route was likely selected to minimize time on the ground in Bangladesh during a volatile period, the report claimed. Indian authorities had granted overflight and landing permission in advance, in response to a request from the Bangladesh side. The aircraft eventually landed at the Hindon Air Force base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Who Were On Board Sheikh Hasina's Flight? Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and close aides were on board as the situation in Dhaka had deteriorated significantly with widespread violence and reports of attacks on police stations and members of the then-ruling Awami League. Punjab CM Mann draws flak for ‘one nation, one husband' remark post Op Sindoor
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday hit out at the BJP, accusing the saffron party of politicising Operation Sindoor for electoral gains. The BJP was quick to get back at him and demanded he apologise and resign for making light of the military operation launched on May 7 to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which the husbands of Hindu women tourists, identified by their sindoor, were targeted. Replying to a question about the BJP campaign for the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly byelection, Mann accused the party of making a mockery of Indian traditions for votes. Alluding to reports that BJP workers are distributing sindoor (vermillion) to households following the success of Operation Sindoor, Mann remarked: 'Will you wear sindoor in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is this One Nation, One Husband?' The BJP denied any such drive to win over voters and its leaders, including Pritpal Singh Balliawal, termed the CM's remarks 'shameful'. BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta is contesting against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee and MP Sanjeev Arora, Congress's Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parupkar Singh Ghumman for the Ludhiana West assembly seat. Describing Mann's remarks as 'vulgarity dressed as leadership', the BJP demanded Mann's resignation. 'He didn't insult the BJP. He insulted every widow of a soldier, every mother of a martyr, every woman of Bharat. And now a question to (AAP national convener) Arvind Kejriwal: Do you support your CM mocking sindoor, a sacred symbol worn by your own wife? Or will you stay silent just to protect your politics? Mann must resign and apologise to the nation,' the party posted on X, adding 'He can't grasp the meaning of sindoor — a symbol of love, sacrifice, and strength for every Indian woman.'
