Jofra Archer set for First-Class return after four years, boosts England's injury-hit pace attack

Indian Express5 hours ago

England pacer Jofra Archer is set to return to First-Class cricket for the first time in four years after being named in English county side Sussex's squad for their away match against Durham, starting on Sunday. Despite initial confusion over his availability, as Archer was not named in a 12-player squad for the County Championship match, his return in the Sussex squad, as later clarified by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will give England a much-needed boost.
Archer has not played a Test match since February 2021, and his last red-ball match was for Sussex in May 2021 after a series of injuries kept delaying his return. The ace pacer has since returned to international white-ball cricket for England, with his last appearance coming in the ICC Champions Trophy held in Pakistan earlier this year.
Archer is among many English quicks currently out through injury, with Mark Wood, Olly Stone and Gus Atkinson all currently unavailable. Wood said he is targeting the fifth India-England Test for his potential return from injury, while Archer could make his international return for the second India-England Test.
England captain Ben Stokes has said the 30-year-old is 'absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on.'
Speaking on Archer, 'Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text saying, 'Zimbabwe?'' said Stokes to Sky Sports, referencing England's innings victory at Trent Bridge in May. 'I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, alright. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not just rush into it'. He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats.'
'It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place, and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket,' he added.

Bumrah praised for another stellar display; Siraj, Prasidh slammed for lack of support: 'Very definition of World Class'

Indian pace star Jasprit Bumrah accounted for all three English wickets that fell on the second day of the first Test at Headingley, ending the day with figures of 3/48. Here's how social media reacted to his brilliance as well as lack of support from the trio of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. read more Jasprit Bumrah celebrates after dismissing Ben Duckett on Day 2 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds. Reuters England mounted a strong response with the bat after bundling India out for 471 on Day 2 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. Ollie Pope led the way as he remained unbeaten on 100 at close of play, scoring his second century on the trot and his ninth overall in Test cricket, with Harry Brook yet to open his account after facing 12 deliveries. Not only did the Englishmen trigger an Indian batting collapse , with Shubman Gill's men losing their seven wickets for just 41 runs, they put themselves in an ideal position to secure a first innings lead on what is an excellent surface to bat on at Headingley. Bumrah stood tall once again, and it was to no one's surprise that he was the standout Indian bowler with figures of 3/48, accounting for all three English wickets on Saturday. Bumrah the sole threat among Indian pacers on Day 2 England, however, could have been in a lot more trouble had Bumrah received more support from the remaining bowlers. Mohammed Siraj was expensive with the brand new ball and had to be taken off after conceding 23 in his first three overs, but settled into a nice rhythm later in the day and nearly accounted for Pope's wicket with the English No 3 batting in the 30s. Prasidh Krishna, however, simply proved ineffective as he leaked 56 runs from 10 overs without collecting a wicket. Shardul Thakur was picked as the bowling all-rounder ahead of Nitish Reddy but did not a noteworthy contribution either with bat or ball, falling for 1 before conceding 23 runs in three overs towards the close of play. Here's how social media reacted to Bumrah's heroics as well as the lack of support from the rest of the Indian pace department on Day 2 of the Headingley Test: If you had to pick one bowler to bowl for humanity against an invading horde of cricket-playing Martians, you'd have to pick Jasprit Bumrah.
