'Matter of concern', says Gajendra Shekhawat on arrest of former Rajasthan Minister's aide on spying charges
Jaipur: Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, on Thursday, described the arrest of Shakur Khan, the Personal Assistant of former Rajasthan Minister and MLA Saleh Mohammad, on espionage charges as a matter of grave concern.
Speaking to media, the Union Minister said, "I have just come from a foreign tour and have been informed that the Personal Assistant of Saleh Mohammad, who has been a former Minister, has now been arrested."
He demanded that all those links connected with Khan should be investigated at the earliest and strict action should be taken against those compromising with the security of the country.
Khan was detained on Wednesday night by an Intelligence department team who were acting on security-related inputs.
Khan, who works in the district employment office, was found to have phone numbers associated with Pakistan stored on his device, an official said.
"There were inputs about Shakur Khan that he could be involved in spying for Pakistan. He was on surveillance following inputs and was detained last night," the official added.
A joint questioning was conducted in Jaisalmer following which the Intelligence department team left for Jaipur with Khan.
According to sources, the 'spy' Shakur Khan was working as a Personal Assistant to former Minister Mohammad under the previous Congress government in Rajasthan.
Khan and Mohammad's villages are nearly eight kilometre away from one another, they said.
Mohammad has been a two-time MLA, a Minister, and has fought four elections under the leadership of the previous Ashok Gehlot government.
He is currently the representative of India of the 'Pir Pagara' (a title given to the leader of the Muslim Sufi order of Hurs in Pakistan's Sindh) of Pakistan.

New Delhi: In a rare show of unity, 16 opposition parties have come together to demand a special session of Parliament, citing the need for a free and fair discussion on national security issues and foreign policy developments after Operation Sindoor. Additionally, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is expected to write separately to the Prime Minister supporting the demand. Congress MP Deepender Hooda explained that the opposition's call for a special session was intensified after the recent ceasefire announcement by the United States in a conflict region. "We want to thank our armed forces in Parliament and discuss what measures are being taken to isolate Pakistan and how we plan to move forward," he said. Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, echoed the sentiment of unity, stating, "We can only go to our Prime Minister. We believe that when the country was facing a threat, we stood together. He credited Gandhi's persistent efforts to bring the issue to the forefront and influenced the Centre to consider the demand for a caste-based census. 'The way the citizens of Madhya Pradesh welcomed the hero of the caste census on the streets of Bhopal was unprecedented. Also, the way Congress workers welcomed Rahul Gandhi here was very touching. I am proud of my leader who proved the saying true, 'the world bows down -- what it needs is someone who can make it bow',' Patwari told ANI. When asked about the ongoing 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' and whether it could help the Congress return to power in the state, Patwari expressed strong confidence. 'The message is very clear, 'Sangathan Srijan' is a mission through which observers have been appointed from AICC and their sole responsibility will be to visit districts and bring in new people, especially from major towns. The focus is on preparing strong leaders -- horses for the long race -- and making them active through this mission,' Singh told ANI. He further thanked Rahul Gandhi for investing time in Madhya Pradesh Congress and expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly strengthen the party in the state. Additionally, Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma added that Rahul Gandhi's Bhopal visit was entirely focused on internal party matters and leadership renewal. 'Rahul Gandhi's visit to Bhopal today was entirely focused on party affairs and party rejuvenation. His speech made it clear that from now on, District Presidents will not be appointed based on recommendations. Instead, strong and capable individuals will be elected -- those who will have the authority to distribute tickets for the councillor, Assembly, and Lok Sabha elections.
