
The new cross-Channel service with eco-conscious tourists in mind
There are many ways to cross the Channel from the UK to France – including a range of ferry routes, Eurostar passenger trains and Eurotunnel vehicle shuttles.
But this summer travellers will be able to choose one more: regular services on a sailing catamaran from Dover to the northern French port of Boulogne.
SailLink is an enterprise launched by Andrew Simons, 49. He has been telling The Independent 's daily travel podcast about the new service.
'We link a journey with a sailing experience. This idea comes from my own needs just to travel across the Channel. What I wanted was to arrive at a port by train or with my bike and be able to get on a ferry and go across, and have a great time going across and have the experience of the sea.
'I found that very difficult to link those preferences. When you have these sort of requirements, then if it doesn't exist, you start looking into it and that's where we get to today.'
The vessel is a 17-metre (57 foot) sailing catamaran named Echoes.
'We can get all our passengers on, and their luggage and their bikes,' said Mr Simons.
'The boat stays nice and flat. So it's not like on a single-hull vessel where it cants as soon as you put the sails up. It has a nice turn of speed. We have a nice, big cockpit area covered where the passengers can be seated.'
The payload is limited to a dozen travellers. The UK government says: 'A ship carrying more than 12 passengers by definition is a passenger ship, and is subject to enhanced constructional and operational requirements to ensure the safety of the passengers.'
Ferries cross from Dover to Calais (a similar distance to Boulogne) in about 90 minutes. The catamaran typically takes about three-and-a-half hours once under way. But the town centre to town centre journey, and the need only to 'turn up to the marina, walk down a pontoon, and then you're on the vessel' offsets the time penalty.
'That's far shorter than the ferry boarding,' said the business founder.
'And then at the other side, it's pretty much the same. You get off, walk up a pontoon, and you're in the town. We're town to town, we're not big industrial ferry terminal to ferry terminal.'
All the border formalities are conducted at the jetty.
The one-way fare is £75. Young people aged 17-27 pay £60, with those aged five to 16 charged £40. The bicycle charge is £10.
Cycle tourists are an important part of the target market. 'For them, particularly, there's very few options,' says Mr Simons. 'You can go on the ferry, but they're not at all designed for you alongside the lorries and the cars. They're floating bits of motorway, really.
Mr Simons is also hoping the service will appeal to hikers, including those on the Canterbury-to-Rome pilgrimage.
'We're trying to to target them, offer them something really great. It's really a valuable part of their time away.'
Many passengers could be deterred by the prospect of sailing in a relatively small vessel across the Strait of Dover, the busiest shipping route in the world – threading between supertankers and giant container ships.
'There's a lot of space and there's a lot of surveillance from the side of the coastguard, from the ships themselves, from us,' says Mr Simons.
'We can see all the tracks of those ships, so we can plan our route, and there are very clear rules to adhere to on going across. It's not like getting to the edge of a motorway as a pedestrian and thinking, 'How am I going to get across here?' It's a very strictly governed thing.'
Unlike the ferries, the frequency of departures is determined by the tides.
'We use the natural forces of wind and tide. Our service is designed to use those most effectively. We use the ebb tide to go from Dover to Boulogne, and that carries us a little on that big conveyor belt of the sea. And we use the flood tide to come back.'
Over the next six weeks there are 13 departures each way, predominantly on Fridays and Sundays. At present, the final sailing is scheduled for Friday 5 September.
'We're a fairly small boat once you get out there,' Mr Simon says. 'But who's to say in the future? This little first attempt is about proving a concept that we can work with those fantastic naturally prevailing forces which exist ideally for going across the Channel by wind in both directions. So we could scale this up. A bigger boat, more suited to the job, could be obviously running longer.'

What is a digital nomad visa, and how do I get one? The rise of ‘workcations' around the world
It has never been easier to clock in to your job from anywhere, with working from home normalised since the pandemic and meetings migrating from the office to Zoom calls. The dawn of the digital work has meant you can set up your workspace in any location, even if that means on the other side of the world. Digital nomad visas allow people to do just that, giving workers a chance to do their job on their laptops from another country and explore communities, cultural landmarks and natural landscapes while they're at it. In 2020, Covid meant that it wasn't possible to travel the world, tick off bucket-list mountain peaks, relax on a remote beach or meet new people in buzzing cities. But the world 2025 looks very different, with ample opportunity to explore. After the UK left the European Union in 2020, the right to work and live in other European countries was swept away. While a deal is being processed for young workers to gain back this benefit, for others who are over 30 or have their sights set a bit further afield, digital nomad visas unlock the chance to stay in a country longer than a tourist, while still earning money. We've rounded up what we know about digital nomad visas and which countries offer the best ones. What is a digital nomad visa? A digital nomad visa is a temporary permit that allows people who work remotely to move to a different country to live and work. Digital nomads refer to people who do not have a requirement to work from an office or a certain place, meaning they are free to work wherever they want to in the world. The type of work usually requires people to have a job that centres around technology, using a laptop and phone to keep in contact with colleagues or clients. Some countries allow those working for a foreign employer and people who are self-employed or manage their own business to benefit from this visa, even including students who want to work remotely for a year. The digital nomad visa often has a longer validity than a tourist visa, meaning the holder can usually stay for months or even years in certain areas. The visas remain valid from as little as six months, such as in Japan, up to five years, like in Thailand. However, these visas are not typically permanent, meaning that once the permit runs out, remote workers have to leave the country or renew it to stay. What are the requirements for a digital nomad visa? Requirements vary from country to country, but generally the person has to be over 18, earn a certain monthly income, and have a job they can do from anywhere. Some countries only allow higher earners to apply for their visa, such as South Korea, where a minimum income of around £54k is required. Countries like Malaysia open up their visas at less than half of this at £25k. Health insurance and a clean criminal record are also often requirements during the visa application. The visa holders cannot already be employed by a company in the host country, or provide goods and services to businesses there. Usually, you have to be self-employed or work for a foreign employer. Some countries will also only allow people from certain nationalities to apply for their digital nomad visa. Why has there been a rise in digital nomad visas? While the concept is not new, more countries, such as the Philippines and New Zealand, have recently announced they will be introducing digital nomad visas. One of the main motivations is to boost tourism by allowing people to stay longer in the country, promoting slower travel and exploring areas in depth. Relaxing the limits on duration of stay means more money will be spent and tourism-based jobs are more secure, especially in shoulder seasons. The introduction of the visa is also a representation of how countries are adapting to fit the modern digital age. As jobs are increasingly becoming digitised and more people work from home since the pandemic, employees have more flexibility than ever before to travel the world. The demand for digital nomad visas among workers has risen due to the desire to travel without having to rely on annual leave to visit different countries. Alongside exploring new places, immersing in nature or visiting bustling cities, the low cost of living in certain countries is also attractive for digital nomads, allowing their income to become more fulfilling while keeping daily costs low. Many countries also allow partners or children to be added to applications, making the opportunity to live in another country as a family more accessible. Tax exemptions and breaks are also important driving points. For example, in Spain digital nomads pay a flat rate of tax at 24 per cent, no matter their salary (up to €600,000). Over in New Zealand, authorities said that if the person's income is taxed elsewhere, they will be exempt from tax so long as they do not spend more than 92 days in the country within 12 months. The days do not need to be consecutive. Which countries offer digital nomad visas? There are well over 50 countries that offer digital nomad visas to UK citizens, so it all depends on whether you are seeking a retreat tucked away on a remote mountain or a temporary home in a bustling city. A report by Global Citizen Solutions, a boutique investment migration firm, found that 63 per cent of digital nomads come from the 'Global North', which encompasses countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands. The firm analysed 65 different visas, including digital nomad visas and other long-term visas that allow people to work remotely in the country. It found that Spain's digital nomad visa ranked the best, due to the country's high quality of life, internet speed and benefits such as a year-long duration and ability to renew. Estonia, Romania, Malta, Portugal, Canada and Hungary also appeared in the top 10 for their digital nomad visas, while the Netherlands, Norway and France secured spots for visas that make it easy to work in the country. Other countries that offer digital nomad visas include a freelance-only one in Germany, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, Latvia, Malaysia, Japan, the UAE (specifically Dubai and Abu Dhabi), South Korea, New Zealand and Thailand, to name just a few. The Global Citizen Solutions report found that European countries had some of the best digital nomad visas. Meanwhile, the Caribbean had some of the greatest income requirements and visa costs, reaching as high as £1,477.

Down by the river: a meditation on mental health
During periods of deep turmoil in her personal life, Dutch photographer and mother of six, Marjolein Martinot, sought solace in nature. Each evening she'd walk to a nearby river in the south of France with her camera in hand. There she captured the quiet beauty of the natural world in the golden light of dusk, forming connections with the animals and families she encountered at the river's edges – jumping, splashing, climbing and swinging from the trees. Riverland is available to purchase from Stanley Barker Marjolein Martinot: 'At once, I felt connected again. Connected to life, to the beautiful nature around me, but most importantly, I felt connected to myself again. For me there is almost no nicer experience than being by yourself, surrounded by peace and quiet in a beautiful natural setting. Finding worthwhile moments, and then to be able to capture these with the camera. It is purely therapeutic – distracting and comforting, and often extremely stimulating as well. It is just a great recipe to feel much better overall' 'The first inspiration for Riverland started while I was photographing a bunch of little boys in trees on the Creuse river of the Indre. It was in the early months of the global Covid pandemic, and it felt almost surreal to be there during those challenging times, and to be photographing these happy and enchanting moments. Something shifted inside of me then, and it made me want to come back there and make more work. I subsequently kept on searching for other unique moments in natural scenery, all in and around the rivers of southern France. This image is the core of the work for me' Through these intimate, unguarded moments – children mid-leap, ripples catching the last light of day, trees bending towards the water, and horses galloping in the fading glow – Martinot began to piece together a new sense of self. She writes: 'I photographed this young couple lying down on the grass, near a branch of the Aveyron river in the region of the Tarn-et-Garonne. They were lying down exactly like this when I asked if I could take their photo, and then told them to please not move. I loved the simple intimacy of the moment and the sweet, content gaze of the girl' 'At some point I started noticing that the project contained a bit of a fairytale vibe, both in mood and scenery, and even in character. That kind of made sense though as in a certain way, the whole project was also an act of escapism for me. It was around that moment that I came up with the title Riverland' 'Maybe it's a bit of a cliche, but I've always appreciated the river as a metaphor for life. It just seems to echo life in such a simple, beautiful and poetic way. Rivers are like the veins of the world, connecting places, plus you never know what or whom you might encounter there, and I just loved that idea. I randomly selected southern rivers in France as starting points for my travels and subsequently followed some of the trails along them. This is a photo of water lily leaves, floating on the surface of a small river in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne' 'After I photographed these wild flowers, I remember thinking that they somehow reminded me of the Coronavirus images I'd seen. Perhaps it's the way the 'tentacles' appear here. In a certain way, they depict the daunting moments of the global pandemic for me' 'Sometimes I just saw someone lovely and/or interesting, and then asked them directly (and naturally also the parents) if I could take their portrait. I was quite lucky in that respect, as most people accepted. I always asked for contact information and then sent them photos of the shoot afterwards. I love taking portraits of people. When taking a portrait, the interaction is often intimate and special. That tiny instant of someone's personality coming through is a lovely experience. Being a naturally shy person, these one-on-one encounters give me a real boost' 'Finding the right light was crucial for the poetic mood I was after in my pictures. With a couple of exceptions, most of the photos for Riverland were taken either very early in the morning at the first available light, or in late afternoon/early evening – at dusk or even later' 'For years I had been struggling to find enough time to express myself genuinely and creatively – both as a woman and as an artist. The times we were (and still are) living in made things feel much worse. With the many horrible things going on in the world, and with so many negative outlooks, I was often finding myself feeling overwhelmed and depressed. Turning towards nature seemed like an obvious answer, and I did just that' 'The work contains a mixture of nature and portrait photography. The nature and landscape photos are mostly quiet and slightly ethereal perhaps, while in contrast to that, some of the portraits might be perceived as rather straightforward and direct. The combination of the two just appealed to me as it resonated with my feelings at the time, and it confronted me with myself in some way as well' 'Some of the photos of people in the book were spontaneous captures as I stumbled upon them because they were perfect in the given situation, and I was afraid that if they became too aware of me photographing it all could end up looking staged. However, I always introduced myself afterwards and asked for permission to continue shooting. I consistently ended up talking to the people I met, as I think that it's an essential part of the whole process. These girls were from Germany, and were vacationing with their parents in the Hérault department' 'As the work was being shot with film and on analogue cameras, it meant that I couldn't see the results right away. However, often when I had a good feeling at the time of taking the picture, it turned out to be so as well. This photo was taken with an old Rolleiflex camera. The introverted mood of the moment just resonated with me'
