Melanie Rayl named Pittsburgh's 2025 Miss Smiling Irish Eyes queen
Melanie Rayl has been named Pittsburgh's Miss Smiling Irish Eyes queen for 2025.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pittsburgh is just 11 days away and Rayl and her court will be among the annual guests of honor.
Rayl, a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, is a second generation Miss Smiling Irish Eyes queen, following in the footsteps of her mother who received the honor in 1991.
Rayl attends Trinity College in Connecticut, studied abroad in Ireland last fall, and says she hopes to return there to attend graduate school.
Joining Rayl for the city's parade later this month will be court Maidens Reece Flowers and Elizabeth Sweeney.
The parade is set to take place on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m.

Steelers legend, 'FOX NFL Sunday' co-host Terry Bradshaw helps with jammed airplane door
Terry Bradshaw was part of a unique flight experience last week. On a flight going from Dallas-Fort Worth to Pittsburgh — where Bradshaw helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win four of their six Super Bowls — the door to open the plane was stuck and couldn't be opened at Pittsburgh International Airport. Fortunately for everybody on the plane, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and cohost of "FOX NFL Sunday" was able to help get the door open after roughly a half-hour, according to CBS Pittsburgh. "The pilot announced, and you could kind of hear he was chuckling as he said it, but he said, 'Thanks to the strength of one of our passengers, we were finally able to get the door open' and so I think we all knew he was alluding to Mr. Bradshaw," Selah Gamble, a passenger on the flight, told CBS Pittsburgh. Bradshaw was flying to Pittsburgh for a roast of former teammate Mel Blount, who was also part of four Steelers' Super Bowl teams. All that said, Bradshaw downplayed his role in helping open the door, posting to Instagram, "Just to set the record straight … I did nothing to open the door on the plane! The maintenance crew had it open in 15 min." Bradshaw, who spent his entire 14-year NFL career in Pittsburgh (1970-83), is second in Steelers history with both 27,989 passing yards and 212 passing touchdowns. Of course, the 1978 NFL MVP, two-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time Pro Bowler went on to be a staple of FOX Sports' Sunday NFL coverage, having been on the set of "FOX NFL Sunday" since the first show in 1994. As for the show's future, former head coach and two-time Super Bowl champion Jimmy Johnson announced his retirement from broadcasting after the 2024 season. Prince William and Kate Middleton are experiencing better days one year out from the princess revealing her cancer diagnosis after intense public scrutiny following her highly publicized Photoshop scandal. Royal sources reveal that, at the time, the drama had a big impact on them as a couple. "There was a real sense then that they felt bruised by it," royal author Robert Hardman told People. "It was treated like some great fraud." After recovering from an abdominal surgery at the end of 2023, Middleton remained out of the public eye for several months, appearing mostly in images taken by herself or William that she later edited. After concerns grew from royal observers, Middleton revealed on March 22, 2024 that she had cancer and would be stepping back from royal duties as she tried to recover. "It was like being in the middle of a tornado and not knowing when it was going to calm down." "If you're Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer," the prince's former private secretary Jason Knauf said in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, referring to both Kate and King Charles's cancer diagnoses. "[It was] absolutely awful…the lowest I've ever seen him." Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith added that the Prince and Princess of Wales "were besieged by ugly speculation and intrusion, with Kate having to make an announcement that was very worrying and uncertain." Now, with a turbulent year behind her, Middleton is back to work, recently visiting cancer hospitals and attending the Irish Guard's St. Patrick's Day Parade. New Orleans to make world's largest pasta bowl
New Orleanians can get a free pasta lunch Friday as part of the city's festivities for St. Joseph's Day. The big picture: The Italian American St. Joseph Society is making what it calls the world's largest bowl of pasta con la sarde at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. It will have 500 pounds of pasta topped with red gravy, sardines, anchovies, pine nuts and breadcrumbs, society president Peter Gilberti tells Axios. The society has been making the dish for years, and it usually feeds about 400 people with plenty of leftovers, he said. Zoom in: David Greco, owner of Mike's Deli and Arthur Avenue Caterers in the Bronx, is leading the cooking team again. He plans to start in the kitchen at 4:30am Friday. The 53rd annual pasta party starts at noon in the hotel's Churchill ballroom. It's a free event with music, wine and dancing. Zoom out: The society's annual parade rolls at 6pm Saturday. It includes a moving St. Joseph's altar. The parade starts at the Hilton and winds through the CDB and French Quarter before returning to the hotel. The procession has been altered due to French Quarter security concerns. Only walking participants — no vehicles — will parade on the Bourbon Street portion, Gilberti tells Axios. The Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Parade has been rescheduled to 10am March 29. It was canceled March 16 due to severe weather.
