Iowa basketball transfer named to prestigious foreign squad
Iowa basketball transfer named to prestigious foreign squad As Iowa basketball continues its offseason restructuring under new head coach Ben McCollum, it was announced Wednesday that transfer forward Alvaro Folgueiras will represent Spain on the Men's U20 squad at the U20EuroBasket 2025 European Championship next month. The European Championship will run from July 12 to 20, with Spain playing three games within the first three days. Similar to what piqued the Hawkeyes' interest in the forward, Folgueiras' overall game, combined with his athleticism and versatility, makes him a dangerous weapon for Spain. In his breakout 2024-25 season last year with Robert Morris, he averaged 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists while shooting 54.8% from the field, 41.3% from 3-point territory, and 78.4% from the free-throw line. Given that the Big Ten is one of the more physical conferences in the nation regarding its style of play, more competition against international bigs should help Folgueiras transition into becoming a center that can evenly match up against the conference's elites. The 6-foot-9 Spaniard will be a critical piece of what McCollum and the Hawkeyes hope to accomplish this upcoming season, as he can score and be a prominent defensive presence. Folgueiras is expected to become a focal point of the McCollum offense at the four and five spot alongside guard Bennett Stirtz. His passing ability can also play well into what McCollum will want to do on offense. His 3-point range will also help keep teams with traditional bigs out of synch, which should open his offensive arsenal. As the excitement toward Iowa's new era increases by the day, the Hawkeyes' 2025-26 season will ironically kick off on Nov. 4 against Robert Morris from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Alabama gets leading hitter from Horizon League school that discontinued baseball program
Alabama gets leading hitter from Horizon League school that discontinued baseball program Coach Rob Vaughn and Alabama baseball have picked up their first position player from the transfer portal since the Crimson Tide's season ended in the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament a week ago. Infielder Justin Osterhouse announced his commitment to Alabama in a post to social media on Saturday. Osterhouse, a sophomore last season, spent the past two years in the Horizon League with Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The school announced it was discontinuing its baseball and softball programs on May 23. A left-handed hitter, Osterhouse led the Mastodons at the plate with a .328 average, 16 home runs and 46 RBIs this past season. He added 10 doubles and led the team in stolen bases (13) and on-base percentage (.453) while starting 52 of the team's 53 games. Listed as 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native started 30 games this past season at second game, 16 at third base, and six at shortstop. His best showing at the plate came on May 15 against Wright State in Fort Wayne. In a 21-17 Mastodons victory, Osterhouse hit four home runs in a 5-for-6, eight-RBI night. Alabama used senior Brennen Norton, Jon Young Jr. and Garrett Staton at second base this past season. The Crimson Tide went 41-18 overall, winning 40 regular-season games for the first time since 2002. They fell to Miami and Southern Miss on back-to-back days at the NCAA Tournament in Hattiesburg. Alabama announced a contract extension for Vaughn on June 3. Contact/Follow us @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Alabama news, notes and opinions.

New survey finds Pittsburgh among the best cities in the U.S. for hockey fans
The Pittsburgh Penguins haven't been in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2022, but according to a new survey, that hasn't lessened the enthusiasm Pittsburghers have for hockey. Despite not having the same level of popularity as the NFL, NBA, or MLB, the NHL is still growing, with a revenue of more than $6 billion this past season. WalletHub's latest survey found that Pittsburgh is the third-best city in America for hockey fans. "The Penguins are an extremely popular team, and they have the most engaged fanbase of any team when it comes to followers on social media, as well as the highest share of people who have a positive opinion of them," the survey stated. Ahead of Pittsburgh, coming in first was Boston, and in second was Detroit. "The Boston Bruins are the second-most valuable NHL team, worth $2.7 billion, and they have the third-most engaged fans on social media," the survey said. As for Detroit, the survey found that the Red Wings are the sixth-most valuable team in the league with the sixth-most engaged fans on social media. Along with team value and social media activity, the survey looked at franchise success on the ice as well as collegiate hockey in the region. The Penguins' five Stanley Cup championships are tied for fifth all-time in the NHL behind only five of the Original Six franchises, the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks. Here in Pittsburgh, we have the Robert Morris Colonials, which boasts some of the most affordable NCAA Hockey tickets in the nation at $150 for season tickets. Just behind Pittsburgh is New York City and the Penguins' long-time, in-state rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, clocked in at 12th in WalletHub's survey.
