Pakistan: Bomb blast kills seven in South Waziristan's Wana

At least seven people were killed and 16 others wounded on Monday after a powerful bomb exploded outside the office of a pro-government peace committee in South Waziristan, northwest Pakistan.
The blast occurred in Wana, the main city in South Waziristan district, a region once considered a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.
Usman Wazir, a local police chief, was quoted by news agency The Associated Press as saying that the bomb specifically targeted the peace committee office, which publicly opposes the
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP). The committee also plays a role in resolving local disputes. Police officials described the explosion as 'powerful,' leaving significant casualties and damage at the scene.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicion quickly turned toward the TTP, which frequently targets security forces, civilians, and organisations seen as collaborating with the Pakistani state.
The Pakistani Taliban, while a distinct entity, maintains close ties with the Afghan Taliban who took power in Afghanistan in 2021 following the withdrawal of US and Nato troops.
The blast came just a day after Pakistan's military announced it had killed 54 militants during an operation in the neighbouring North Waziristan district. According to AP, those militants had attempted to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan, underlining the continued volatility along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
The Pakistani Taliban's resurgence has been a major concern for Islamabad, particularly since many of its leaders and fighters have found safe haven in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover.

(BLA) claimed responsibility for a deadly roadside bomb attack on April 25, which killed ten Pakistani military personnel and injured three others in Quetta.
The BLA said that a remote-controlled IED was used in the attack targeting a bomb disposal squad vehicle.
Pakistan continues to face threats from insurgent groups across different provinces. While the TTP focuses mainly on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and border regions, the BLA has carried out a series of deadly attacks in Balochistan.

POK man arrested in J&K identified as terrorist guide
Jammu: A Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) resident arrested along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K's Poonch district on Sunday while attempting to infiltrate into India has been identified as a terrorist guide. Officials said 22-year-old Mohammad Arif Ahmed from Dadote-Kotli in POK was apprehended on Sunday afternoon in a forward area in Bimber Gali sector, when he was leading a group of Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, suspected to be four in number, into the Indian side. The alert Army troops noticed suspicious movement along the LoC and foiled the infiltration bid. While Arif was nabbed, the terrorists accompanying him escaped by jumping off from a cliff, and returned to the Pakistan side taking advantage of thick foliage and adverse weather conditions, the sources said. The footage of a drone put on surveillance in the area after the incident showed a blood trail, indicating that some of the terrorists had suffered injuries while jumping from the cliff, the sources added. The security forces seized a mobile phone and Pakistani currency amounting to Rs 20,000 from Arif. He told the interrogators that he was familiar with the local terrain and worked at the behest of the Pakistani Army to help terrorists infiltrate into J&K. Arif is undergoing a detailed interrogation and crucial intelligence was being extracted that could help in further examining the counter-infiltration grid in the region, the sources said.

Pak, China mull new regional bloc as Saarc stalls
Islamabad: Pakistan and China are mulling launching a new regional platform amid growing dissatisfaction over the freeze in Saarc activity, with both sides holding consultations on building an alternative bloc to advance connectivity, trade, and political dialogue. Diplomatic sources in Islamabad confirmed that discussions are underway, with the idea gaining traction after a recent China-Pakistan-Bangladesh trilateral in Kunming. While formal details remain under wraps, the proposed grouping is expected to include multiple South and Central Asian countries, including India. However, given the current state of India's ties with both Beijing and Islamabad, New Delhi's participation remains unlikely. 'The idea is to create momentum in the region, not wait indefinitely for Saarc to move,' a Pakistani official familiar with the developments said. Islamabad and Beijing reportedly see the current regional vacuum as an opportunity to reshape multilateral cooperation through new alignments. Saarc has not held a summit since 2014, with the 2016 meet in Islamabad indefinitely shelved after India pulled out in the wake of the Uri terror attack. Since then, the bloc has remained dormant. China, not a Saarc member, has increased its footprint in South Asia through the Belt and Road Initiative, and is seen as a key driver behind the push for a new forum. Analysts say the Kunming trilateral was likely a trial balloon to gauge interest among smaller regional players like Bangladesh. A new bloc could also offer China and Pakistan another multilateral platform to align on CPEC , infrastructure financing, and shared climate and trade challenges, outside the rigid Saarc framework. No timeline has been set for a formal announcement, but officials hinted that a blueprint could emerge by the end of the year, possibly tied to upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meetings where both India and Pakistan are members. While the move signals a shift in regional thinking, much will depend on how other South Asian nations — especially Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh — respond to the idea of replacing Saarc with a China-backed structure. Bangladesh had last week denied forming 'any new alliance' with Beijing and Islamabad. On June 26, Bangladesh foreign affairs adviser Md Touhid Hossain said there is 'no new alliance among Bangladesh, China and Pakistan', as he addressed queries from reporters on the June 19 Bangladesh-China-Pakistan meeting in Kunming. 'We are not forming any alliance. It was a meeting at the official level, not at the political level. ..There was no element of formation of any alliance,' Hossain had said, emphasising Dhaka's relationship with New Delhi is now at a 're-adjustment' stage and there is 'no lack of goodwill from our side'. 60kg heroin of ‘int'l cartel' seized, 9 held from multiple states
1 2 Jaisalmer: Punjab Police in collaboration with Border Security Force (BSF) and Rajasthan Police busted an international drug cartel and seized 60.3 kg of heroin from near India-Pakistan border in Barmer, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said Monday. This cartel was operated by Pakistani smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based handler Joban Kaler, he said. Nine traffickers of this cartel and hawala operators from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir have been arrested, the DGP said. "Punjab Police has achieved a significant success against drugs. Under an operation, 60.302 kg of heroin has been seized. We dismantled a major gang, leading to arrests from multiple states. We remain committed to combating drug trafficking and narco-terrorism. Our goal is to make Punjab drug-free and protect the youth from this menace," Yadav said. According to the DGP, this operation was based on months of intensive surveillance and intelligence gathering. Police utilised modern technologies and inter-state coordination to track the drug cartel's network. Interrogation of the arrested individuals is ongoing .
