Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA confirms identities of 87 of those killed
The identities of 87 persons who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 have been confirmed through DNA testing, PTI quoted an official as saying on Monday.
The bodies of 57 persons have been handed over to their families after the identification, said Dr Rajnish Patel, professor of surgery at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.
On Sunday, the civil hospital confirmed that the body of Gujarat's former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had also been identified through the DNA test. The body was handed over to his family on Monday.
Rupani was among the 242 persons aboard the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft – enroute to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad – that crashed just 33 seconds after taking off.
Only one passenger survived with ' impact injuries '.
The aircraft's crash into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College also killed at least four medical students on the ground. This is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade.
Though the number of persons killed on the ground has yet to be ascertained, the civil hospital said on Sunday that 250 samples, including those of persons killed on the ground, have been collected for identification, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, a high-level panel constituted to probe the accident will likely hold its first meeting on Monday, The Indian Express reported.

Plane crash: Meitei body urges people to cooperate in receiving remains of Manipuri AI crew members
Imphal: The bodies of Air India crew members 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson and 20-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma from Manipur, who were killed in the horrific plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, would be brought back to Imphal after DNA identification and completion of other formalities, a leading Civil Society Organisation (CSO) said here on Monday. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a apex body of the Meitei community said that according to the information given by the Singson and Sharma families, the mortal remains of the two victims are currently undergoing DNA identification. 'The DNA-based identification is expected to take approximately 72 hours. Once the process is complete, the remains will be brought back to their home state of Manipur,' said COCOMI's information wing convenor Laikhuram Jayenta. Sharma belonged to the non-tribal Meitei community and hailed from Manipur's Thoubal district while Singson is a resident of the tribal inhabited Kangpokpi district, and was from the tribal Thadou community. The COCOMI appealed for cooperation in receiving the mortal remains of the two daughters of Manipur. The body said that the entire state of Manipur has united in mourning their untimely loss. 'Since the tragic news broke, people across the state, especially the youth, have paid tributes through candlelight vigils, prayers, and messages of solidarity, offering comfort and strength to the bereaved families. "In this regard, COCOMI appeals to all sections of society, including CSOs, local clubs, youth bodies, and the general public, to extend full cooperation and support in receiving the mortal remains at Imphal Airport and ensuring their dignified return to their respective families for final rites. "The CSOs also urge the state government and concerned administrative authorities to make all necessary logistical arrangements for the smooth transfer of the bodies to their homes. 'If willing, the families may come forward to receive their daughters at the airport without hesitation. COCOMI is ready to extend any coordination or assistance required during this process,' said Jayenta in a statement. The statement added that as a community, 'let us honour their return and pray for their souls to rest in eternal peace. May the land of Manipur welcome back her daughters with love and pride. And if life grants them another chance, may they return to us once again as the shining daughters of our soil.' Meanwhile, family members of both Singson and Sharma went to Ahmedabad to complete the necessary formalities.

Assam begins drive to bulldoze over 600 homes in Goalpara district
The Assam government on Monday began its drive to demolish the homes of 667 families, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims, in an anti-encroachment drive in the Goalpara district. Goalpara District Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury told Scroll that 45% of the homes on an allegedly encroached land in the Hasila Beel area were razed on Monday. The demolition drive will continue on Tuesday to clear the remaining structures, he added. 'There was no resistance from the encroachers and no untoward incident has been reported so far,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. The official claimed that the district administration had served eviction notices to the villagers in 2023 and 2024, instructing them to vacate the 'wetland area'. 'We again served them notices on Friday and asked them to clear their houses by Monday morning,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. Many residents left the village with their belongings, while the remaining families have requested that the district administration rehabilitate them. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in Assam in 2016, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been ousted from government land, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department in August. In September, the Goalpara district administration carried out a demolition drive in which 450 families, or about 2,000 persons, were evicted. The families were illegally occupying 55 hectares of the Bandarmatha Reserve Forest, the newspaper quoted unidentified officials as saying. The evictions in Goalpara were carried out in line with a High Court order. This had come less than two weeks after two men were shot dead by the police amid violent protests during an eviction drive in Moregaon. On September 9, the district authorities bulldozed nearly 240 homes, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims from Morigaon district. The residents had built their homes in the low-lying area over several decades. Three days later, on September 12, the officials returned and gave them an ultimatum to vacate the land in two hours. This led to a violent clash between the residents and the officials, during which two men were shot dead by the police. Thirty-three persons, including 22 government and police officers, were also injured in the clash.

Honeymoon Murder: Weapon Used To Kill Raja Raghuvanshi Found, Was Bought From Guwahati

Meghalaya Murder: A non local machete or 'dao', which was used to kill Indore-native newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been found, according to media reports citing the police. As per the sources, the machete was repeatedly used to hit Raja even as the he tried to save himself. Vishal Chauhan, one of the accused arrested in the murder case, allegedly attacked Raja with the machete first. Blood stains were also found on another accused Akash's shirt since the victim tried to defend himself during the attack. Police have also found during the probe that the accused had bought the machete from near Guwahati's railway station. However, according to Raja's preliminary autopsy report, he was attacked twice, at the back and front of his head. Raja and Sonam, who got married on May 11 in Indore, went to Meghalaya on their honeymoon. He was found dead in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills district on June 2, 10 days after the couple went missing, while a search continued for Sonam. She emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away from the crime spot, on June 9. The murder took a sensational turn when Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam, was held by Meghalaya Police along with her three alleged aides, Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (20). The fresh revelations have pointed to a well-orchestrated conspiracy behind Raja's murder. Raj Kushwaha, who was allegedly in a relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi, has been identified as the mastermind behind Raja's murder with Sonam actively involved in the plot. Earlier today, a new video of the Indore couple trekking in Meghalaya, has surfaced on the social media. On the day of the murder, the couple had checked out of the home stay and set out on a trek to Cherrapunji. A guide who had seen them last saw the couple and offered his services, but they refused. Around 2,000 steps into the around 3,000-steps route, the three accused joined them. According to the police probing the case, the conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11. 'The three young people were friends, and one of them is a cousin of Raj. It was not a typical contract killing. Yes, the plan was to kill and they did it as a favour to their friend Raj," East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told news agency PTI. Raj had given them Rs 50,000 for the expenditures, he said. Syiem further revealed that the plot began in February, when the group was in Indore. The plan revolved around making Sonam disappear, but later turned into a murder conspiracy. 'One plan was to make people believe that she would wash away by a river. Another plan was to murder any woman, burn the body and claim that it was of Sonam. However, none of the plans fructify," the police officer said. After Raja and Sonam were married on May 11, they visited the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. A few days later, the accused also reached the area.
