Proposed Trade Between Lakers and Pacers Shows What's Wrong With NBA
Proposed Trade Between Lakers and Pacers Shows What's Wrong With NBA originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
After losing in the NBA Finals to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Indiana Pacers are expected to remain one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, although they will clearly take a step back with Tyrese Haliburton ruled out for the season with a torn Achilles.

Andrew Nembhard is more than capable of taking over playmaking duties, although Indiana is simply losing an All-NBA player. Regardless of position or role, that will hurt.
As a result, the Pacers have already been included in trade rumors. Bennedict Mathurin, Obi Toppin, and Jarace Walker have all been included in speculation. For now, speculation is just that, although there is some merit to their making a trade.
Mathurin's value is at an all-time high, Toppin is a movable salary who will get them back under the luxury tax after they extend Myles Turner, and Walker has not blossomed in Indiana and could use a change of scenery.
While mock trades can be realistic, one from The Wrightway Sports Network simply misses the point.

Full Mock Trade Details:
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: 2026 first-round pick, 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick, 2030 first-round pick, Myles Turner, Bennedict Mathurin
Indiana Pacers Receive: Austin Reaves
First of all, this trade doesn't work. Turner is expected to sign a contract worth roughly $35 million per season this summer, so the Pacers would send out around $45.1 million while taking on only $13.9 million in Reaves. On top of that, Indiana can't trade back-to-back picks, so two of those selections would have to be changed for swaps, not outright trades.
The Lakers have long been linked to Turner despite the Pacers seeming hell-bent on keeping him in town, and the desire seems to go both ways. While Reaves would be an excellent fit in a Haliburton-less backcourt, four picks (or swaps) is way too much for a second or third option, and Turner and Mathurin are more than just matching salary, although they don't even do that.
The proposed trade is a sobering reminder that the NBA offseason can quickly go off the rails with speculation and creativity, although a degree of realism is required, especially for a team that just made the Finals and shouldn't be eager for a total restructure of the roster.

Mavericks' Jason Kidd details ‘uncomfortable' summer league plans for Cooper Flagg
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is already plotting ways to challenge Cooper Flagg. Kidd knows what kind of skillset the No. 1 pick brings to the table, but he emphasized on Friday that the upcoming NBA Summer League will be a chance for Flagg to expand his game in a role that's atypical for him. 'I don't look at the position,' Kidd said. 'I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show.' Advertisement The 6-foot-8 forward has just about everything in his bag of tricks as a player, but running as the primary point guard would certainly be creative for the former Duke star. While it's an experiment that likely wouldn't carry over too much into the regular season, especially with Kyrie Irving eventually returning from his ACL injury, Kidd is excited to see how his rookie would respond. Advertisement 'We want to push,' Kidd continued. 'And I think he's going to respond in a positive way. It's all right to fail. It's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that.' Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban is on the same page with Kidd, too. Cooper Flagg and Jason Kidd spoke to media at Flagg's introductory press conference Friday. Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Cooper Flagg smiles during his introductory press conference. AP Advertisement 'I'm sending a text to J-Kidd, I'm like, 'point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up,'' Cuban said Friday, detailing Flagg's potential with Dallas. 'Cooper at point guard, Klay (Thompson) at the two, P.J. (Washington) at the three, [Anthony Davis] and then [Dereck Lively] and (Daniel) Gafford — we're going to have the biggest team in the NBA.' With veterans all throughout the Mavericks' roster, the former Duke phenom projects to have a comfortable workload in the regular season as opposed to a massive one that a No. 1 pick may typically get — but this challenge from Kidd should keep Flagg extra busy in the summer league. Kidd, who coached the Bucks from 2014-2018, mentioned that he employed similar tactics when coaching Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose playmaking prowess has greatly progressed over the years.

Oklahoma City's Jalen Williams to have surgery on right wrist after playing entire postseason with the injury
Jalen Williams #8 of the Oklahoma City Thunder looks on during the press conference after defeating the Indiana Pacers in Game Seven of the 2025 NBA Finals at Paycom Center on June 22, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. (Photo by) Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, Thunder executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti told reporters on Monday. Williams, 24, is expected to be available for the start of the 2025-26 NBA regular season, Presti said. Advertisement Presti discussed the injury as part of his end-of-season media availability on Monday morning, putting a bow on Oklahoma City's first NBA championship — a title run that Williams completed, it turns out, while playing with an injury to his shooting hand. The injury happened during a victory over the Phoenix Suns in the final week of the regular season, according to Thunder podcaster Andrew Schlecht. Williams finished that game with 33 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 turnovers in 36 minutes — a do-it-all performance emblematic of the all-around impact he had throughout a campaign that earned him the first All-Star, All-NBA and All-Defensive honors of his young career. At times during postseason practice sessions and shootarounds, Williams could be seen wearing a brace on that ailing right wrist. He didn't miss any time, though, and while his production at times waned — he shot under 40% from the field in nine of Oklahoma City's 23 playoff games — he continued to shoulder a significant two-way burden for Mark Daigneault's squad without complaint. Advertisement 'The part that I'm most impressed with is in our modern era, when someone has a poor performance, or they're not playing to their capability in a game and there's a lot of attention on it, you often see a little birdie make sure that everybody knows that the player is not 100%,' Presti said Monday. Never happened with this guy. Not one time. He powered through. He showed incredible mental endurance and security in himself." Despite suffering the injury just before the start of the postseason, Williams shined throughout Oklahoma City's playoff run, averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.4 steals in 34.6 minutes per game as the Thunder won the Western Conference crown and outlasted the Indiana Pacers in seven hard-fought games in the 2025 NBA Finals.

LeBron James' Says His Wife Wants Him To 'F-cking Retire' Soon As Social Media Remembers Tom Brady's Marriage-Ending Decision
Source: Phillip Faraone / Getty It's hard to digest for some fans, but LeBron James' remaining NBA seasons are numbered, and it's not just competing teams looking to beat him in the West waiting for him to retire. According to ESPN , one person who wants him to retire is his wife, Savannah, as the career change would effectively have him around more, rather than life revolving around basketball. During a dinner in New York over the weekend, the Jameses were dining with friends, including former teammates Kevin Love and his wife, Kate, as well as others. One of the guests leaked a snippet of their personal conversation on Instagram, in which James shared his wife's blunt answer regarding a retirement timeline. '[Savannah] wants me to f-cking retire in the next year or so,' he reportedly said. Now that we know retirements are top of mind, the focus shifts to whether he'll retire as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. There's some inkling of the future since he decided to exercise his player option for the 2025-26 season, worth $52.6 million. Childhood friend and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul confirmed the news to ESPN, explaining that he has loved being part of the organization but has a more win-now mentality, so they may not be on the same timeline. '[James] knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,' Paul said. 'We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive, and want what's best for him.' King James already owns several major NBA records, like most minutes played in the regular and postseason, along with four Finals MVPs, and four championships. But his longevity of greatness will be poetically cemented after one more season, making it his 23rd and officially one more than Vince Carter, and beating him out for most seasons ever played. The 40-year-old has remained happy as a Laker, which was evident when he was approached about a possible trade to the Golden State Warriors this past season. Although he denied the trade, he left the door open for further discussion. 'I am a Laker, and I'm happy and been very happy being a Laker the last six years and hopefully it stays that way,' James said at the time.
