Medical candidates rue lack of transparency in total fees
Chennai: One question the state medical selection committee consistently fails to answer accurately concerns the total fees charged by self-financing medical colleges and private universities for govt and management quota MBBS seats.
While the fee committee prescribes tuition, most colleges add development charges, transportation, insurance, library, hostel, books, and stationery fees, inflating the total by up to 12 lakh.
Officials in directorate of medical education clarify that the 'tuition fee' set by fee fixation committee excludes charges for hostel, library, or mess. A senior official stated, "We collect tuition fee and transfer it to the college.
Colleges are allowed to collect a nominal fee for hostel or transport. We don't want to display the entire fee, or it will look like it's approved by the govt," he said.
This practice has sparked outrage among parents and student counsellors, who demand complete fee transparency during the choice-blocking phase. "The committee asks me to make smart choices during the admission process. How will I lock choices when I don't know the fee college will ask?" said S R Ramani, whose nephew awaits admission in 2025.
"My friends paid almost double the prescribed fees in the prospectus. Why can't the govt make it mandatory for all colleges to declare the fee?" he said.
In 2024, after allotting a govt quota seat in a self-financing medical college affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, the state selection committee collected 4.35 lakh for the first-year MBBS tuition fee. However, when parents visited the college for other formalities, they were asked to pay an additional 3.61 lakh towards various other fees.
Another college, with a prescribed tuition fee of 4.45 lakh, demanded additional 4.15 lakh.
Copies of these receipts are available with TOI.
The fees charged by private medical universities can increase by up to 8 lakh. Student counsellor Manickavel Arumugam stated, "The govt must say the fee for a govt seat is anywhere between 6 lakh to 12 lakh a year instead of saying the tuition fee is between 4.35 lakh to 5.4 lakh." For the management quota, an additional fee can push the total annual fee from the prescribed 13.5 lakh in self-financing colleges to up to 20 lakh, and from 16.4 lakh in private universities to up to 23 lakh.
Officials from self-financing medical colleges said they display fees transparently at the first opportunity. A dean of a self-financing medical college in Chennai said, "We give breakup to parents when they bring allotment orders. Parents have used them to get education loans from banks." He added, "Non-minority colleges share up to 65% of their seats, but the fee is the same for minority and non-minority institutions. How can we run the institution with such low revenue?"
At least three self-financing colleges have applied for deemed university status to gain autonomy in deciding their fee structure. Deemed universities charged up to 30 lakh a year for MBBS in 2024.
TN health secretary P Senthilkumar said state would consider displaying full fee breakdown on the govt portal during counselling this year.

Kill Bill, says Musk, as he emerges as alternative power center to Trump
TOI correspondent from US : Elon Musk has not only parted ways with President Trump but is emerging as a political challenger to the MAGA supremo after clashing with him on the so-called Big Beautiful Bill that the tech-tycoon says will bankrupt America. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL!" Musk said on a second day of attacks on Trump and his legislative flock, planting a banner of revolt in the Republican Party, and emerging as a new power center to challenge Trump. Although Musk is not eligible to run for the White House because he is not US-born, he has allied with Republican Senators who share his alarm over America's mounting debt and who can scupper the bill as it comes to the Senate before the July 4 recess. "This spending bill contains the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history! It is the Debt Slavery Bill," Musk said in one of several posts on a legislation that Trump owns, repurposing a poster from the movie Kill Bill. Musk went on to pin reactions from Fox News to illustrate that his stand on spending cuts to contain the deficit had more support from the rank and file than Trump Republicans had for the BBB. Musk also went on to endorse a proposal by GOP Senator Mike Lee to draft a constitutional amendment to oust every member of Congress whenever inflation exceeds 3 per cent, an idea once mooted by Warren Buffett to eliminate the US deficit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Democrats are rejoicing over Musk attacks on Trump, who, in an ironic twist, reached out to a liberal Democratic senator, Elizabeth Warren (who he has long derided as "pocohontas' and a "radical left loony) to work on legislation to scrap the debt ceiling. "I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING. The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe," Trump said on his social media platform. "@realDonaldTrumpand I agree: the debt limit should be scrapped to prevent an economic catastrophe. Let's pass a bipartisan bill and get rid of it forever," Warren responded, indicating new alignments centering on fiscal policy.

Madras High Court affirms LGBTQIA+ rights amid same-sex marriage rulings
The Madras High Court affirmed that LGBTQIA+ individuals can form families through alternative means, recognizing "chosen families." This ruling came as the court ordered the release of a lesbian woman forcibly separated from her partner, criticizing the police's insensitive handling of the case and emphasizing the right to choose one's path. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads The Madras High Court has ruled that while the Supreme Court has not legalized same-sex marriage , individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community can still form families through alternative means. The court emphasized that 'marriage is not the sole mode to find a family' and recognized the concept of a 'chosen family' as established within LGBTQIA+ jurisprudence.A division bench comprising Justices G R Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayanan made these observations on May 22 while ordering the release of a 25-year-old lesbian woman who had been forcibly separated from her partner and subjected to harassment by her judges noted that not all parents are accepting, contrasting the detenue's mother unfavorably with Justice Leila Seth, who had publicly acknowledged and accepted her son's sexual orientation. 'The mother of the detenue is no Leila Seth. We understand her desire for her daughter to live a conventional heterosexual life, marry, and settle down. However, as an adult, the detenue is entitled to choose her own path,' the bench court also expressed discomfort with the term 'queer,' highlighting its dictionary definitions as 'strange' or 'odd' and questioned its appropriateness. 'For a homosexual individual, their sexual orientation is natural and normal. There is nothing strange about such inclinations. Why then should they be labeled queer?' the judges court criticized the local police for their insensitive handling of the case, particularly for compelling the detenue to return to her parents despite her wishes. The bench censured the police's 'rank inaction' and insensitivity, underscoring that government officials, especially police, have a duty to respond promptly and appropriately to complaints from LGBTQIA+ safeguard the detenue's rights, the court restrained her family members from interfering with her personal liberty and issued a writ of continuing mandamus directing the jurisdictional police to provide adequate protection to both the detenue and her partner, who had filed the habeas corpus petition.(With inputs from TOI)

‘Live battle opportunity': Major PR Rahul calls Operation Sindoor ‘thrilling', says priority was evacuating people from border areas
THRISSUR: Major P R Rahul, from Puthoor in the district, on Wednesday said he was thrilled to have participated in India's recent military action Operation Sindoor . Major Rahul has been serving in the Army for the last eight years and was deployed in the artillery regiment just 8km from the Pakistan border during the operation. 'It was a fantastic and thrilling experience. It was a sort of once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in a live battle. At the same time, it was more concerning for the civilians as they were involved not by force, but by virtue of being there. Our concern was for them,' Rahul told TOI. He is presently visiting his family at Puthur. 'The operation was quite professionally dealt with, and we could achieve what we wanted to,' he said. 'We said in the beginning that we would give a befitting reply at the time and place of our choosing, and went into the planning. Our concern was to evacuate most people living along the border to safer places,' said Rahul. On the affected people's response to the operation, he said, 'They are always supportive. They told us that we could use all their resources, their houses and everything. Most people living there had previously served in the Army, and knew the dynamics. They even volunteered to come and help us in terms of any requirement: manpower, fuel, food, shelter or anything else. That was even more encouraging for us.' Son of Puthur Poluvalappil Raveendranathan and Sheeja, Rahul was felicitated by DCC president Joseph Tajet and other Congress functionaries for his contributions during Operation Sindoor. He was also given a reception by the residents' association at Puthur on Wednesday morning.
