Daren Sammy fined for criticizing TV umpire during first test
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) — West Indies coach Daren Sammy has been fined 15% of his match fee after publicly criticizing TV umpire Adrian Holdstock during the first test against Australia in Barbados.
The sanction followed Sammy's post-play press conference on day two, where he called for consistency in Decision Review System (DRS) rulings after a series of contentious calls at Kensington Oval.
Sammy expressed frustration that his side were on the 'sharp end of the stick' for two caught behind decisions that had been referred to Holdstock which saw Australia batter Travis Head given not out, while West Indies wicketkeeper batter Shai Hop was adjudicated out.
The West Indies coach also referenced two contrasting lbw referrals involving the host's skipper Roston Chase and Australia's Cameron Green.
'When there's doubt in something, just be consistent across the board,' he said. 'From the images that we're seeing, the decisions are not fair enough for both teams… I just want fairness.'
The 41-year-old, in his first test as West Indies' test team coach, pleaded guilty to breaching the ICC's code of conduct for 'public criticism of, or inappropriate comment' toward a match official.
Fast bowler Jayden Seales was also fined 15% of his fee for his send-off to Australian skipper Pat Cummins on day one.
Australia won the first test by 159 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.
The second test begins Thursday in Grenada.

Ilia Topuria makes case for being UFC's pound-for-pound best with first-round KO of Charles Oliveira
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ilia Topuria continued his ascension up the pound-for-pound ladder with a major statement via a vicious first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira to win the vacant lightweight championship Saturday night at UFC 317. Topuria used a sharp right hand to set up a devastating left hook that dropped Oliveira to end the bout at the 2:27 mark of the opening round, fulfilling his prediction of a first-round KO while sending the announced crowd of 19,800 into a frenzy. 'I always say I represent the new generation of mixed martial arts,' said Topuria, who closed a -400 favorite at BetMGM sportsbook. Topuria (17-0), who now has 10 first-round finishes to his credit, moved up to the 155-pound weight class following a successful campaign in the featherweight division last year. He claimed that belt with a second-round knockout of Alexander Volkanovski and defended his title by finishing Max Holloway in the third round of an October bout in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Marco Reus scored in the 70th minute and the LA Galaxy played the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night in the 104th edition of the California Clásico. LA (1-14-5) is unbeaten in its last eight road matches (Stanford Stadium & PayPal Park) across all competitions against San Jose (7-8-5) dating to June 26, 2021. San Jose native Beau Leroux opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a shot into the upper-right corner for his fourth of the season. He settled Mark-Anthony Kaye's cross with his left foot and curled in a shot with his right from the top of the 18-yard box. San Jose goalkeeper Daniel stopped an initial attempt in the 70th, but it bounced right back to Reus for an easy touch home. It was Reus' first game wearing the captain's armband.
