Chichester residents back new Dutch-style roundabout
Residents have given their seal of approval to a Dutch-style roundabout which has opened in Chichester.The Westgate roundabout near the Cathedral is the third of its kind in the country, following projects in Sheffield and Cambridge.The design - which gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians - has a cycle lane separated from the road around the edge and zebra crossings on each exit.Chichester resident Roger Mallock said: "It's so great, there's space and a feeling that it's safe when you cross this which actually wasn't the case [before].
"It's really important to have opportunities for people to travel in a safe and controlled manner and this offers that."Sophie Cotton, another resident, said: "It's good if you're prioritising cyclist and pedestrians. It's a good step forward for the environment and people in general."
Louise Simpson added: "I think it looks really smart but I do think we will need our wits about us with the new layout."The roundabout cost £950,000 and was paid for by the developer behind the 750-home West of Chichester development.The first Dutch-style roundabout opened in Cambridge in 2020 and the second in Sheffield in December last year.This roundabout project, which started in June last year, is being paid for by developers Miller Homes and Vistry Southern, according to West Sussex County Council.

BARCELONA, June 2 (Reuters) - Max Verstappen has conceded that his Spanish Grand Prix clash with Mercedes' George Russell, which left the Formula One champion on the brink of a ban, was wrong and should not have happened. The Red Bull driver made his comments on Instagram a day after the race at the Circuit de Catalunya. Four-times world champion Verstappen was given a 10-second post-race penalty for appearing to drive into Russell after a late safety car period, as well as three penalty points on his super-licence. The added time dropped him from fifth to 10th while the penalty points took his tally to 11 in a 12-month period. One more in the next two races before the end of June will trigger a race ban. "We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out," Verstappen, who had led Sunday's race won by McLaren's Oscar Piastri, said in his post. "Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened. "I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal." On Sunday, in the immediate aftermath, Verstappen had preferred not to comment. The Dutch driver has won twice this season, the only non-McLaren driver to do so, but his hopes of a fifth title are slipping away as McLaren continue to dominate with seven wins in nine races so far. His move on Russell drew a mixture of condemnation and astonishment in the paddock. "It looked like a very intentional retaliation. Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him, just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at Turn One," said Mercedes' 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg on Sky Sports. "That's something which is extremely unacceptable and I think the rules would be a black flag, yes. If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that's a black flag." Verstappen said on Sunday that Rosberg "can have his opinion", while Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told reporters "Nico's quite sensational in the way he commentates, so we'll leave it there."

Norris earned a morale-boosting second win of the campaign last Sunday to move to within three points of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in the championship. And the British driver headed Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.367 seconds in the opening running at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya with Lewis Hamilton third for Ferrari. Hamilton was 0.378 sec adrift of Norris while his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc took fourth spot. Piastri finished fifth. McLaren's rivals might have hoped that a clampdown on flexible front wings – which some believe has contributed to the British team's rise – would slow them down. However, the early evidence of the rule tweak appears to have done little to influence McLaren's speed with Norris holding an early advantage. Although there could be some concern for Piastri who was more than half-a-second down on his team-mate. Verstappen is the only driver outside of McLaren to win a race this season following victories in Japan and Imola to put him 25 points off the title pace.
