A Mom Went Viral For Breaking Down The Cost Of Giving Birth In America, And People Are Calling It "Crazy"
Kayla Kosuga (@kaylakosuga), a 24-year-old living in Florida, recently went viral for explaining how much it cost to give birth to her most recent child. The video has been viewed over 18 million times and is, once again, an example of how America's healthcare system continues to highlight just how difficult and costly it can be to get basic care. TikTok: @kaylakosuga / Via Kayla starts off the TikTok with: "This is how much it costs to give birth in America: $44,318.41. I had my little guy three weeks ago, so they definitely wasted no time sending me that bill." The social media influencer, who was in the hospital for two days, noted she had a vaginal birth with epidural and no complications. Kayla then shares a screenshot of her itemized bill after giving birth, revealing several costs: A private one-bed room and board was $10,100, pharmacy was $89.40, anesthesia was $1,845, labor room/delivery was $10,275, and more. Other care services Kayla was charged for: • Laboratory: $859 • Specialty Services: $585 • Other Diagnostic Services: $1,347 "And that's just one bill," the 24-year-old explains in the video. "We have multiple bills to go through, guys." For transparency, Kayla shares that insurance paid $20,353.62 of the first bill, leaving her and her partner responsible for the other $4,746.78. However, the cost to pay the doctor who delivered her baby with insurance was an additional $4,395.85. Kayla continues saying in the TikTok that she also received an epidural bill for $2,060.86 — the cost of the doctor and "not the epidural itself." Lastly, Kayla reveals that her baby received a bill, too, which added up to $12,761.30 without insurance. For their family of five now, the cost of insurance per month is $2,500 — a nearly $400 increase from when they were just a family of four. "We're still waiting for him to process on our insurance," she explains, "so, for now, this is the cost without it." Kayla's TikTok received over 2.2 million likes and over 22,000 comments, with a majority of people expressing their shock at all the charges that come with pregnancy and giving birth. One user said, "americas healthcare system is a joke... how does the newborn have a $12k bill? 😭😭😭." Another TikTok user commented, "And they wonder why the birth rate is declining 🫠 44k!!!" Meanwhile, people outside of the US are sharing the drastic differences when it comes to the cost of giving birth. One TikTok user said, "I love living in Sweden sometimes. It was all FREE!! I used three different kinds of pain killers (epidural, gas, and syringe), had some complications and had to stay at the hospital 4 four nights." In America, the average cost to have a child is $19,000 — but for many women, that number varies based on insurance and whether or not there are complications with the pregnancy. Notably, 1 in 12 Americans is in medical debt, with a study suggesting that Americans owe $220 billion. As said by Kayla as she concludes her TikTok breaking down her $44,318.41 bill — and as many others have shared — it truly is "crazy." If you're a mother, how much did it cost you to give birth? If you've had children years apart, did you notice a difference in the costs? Which costs surprised you the most? Lip-Filler Disaster Drives Millions to Watch on TikTok
In a spiraling series of TikTok videos posted over 72 hours, a U.K. woman documented her journey of getting her lip filler dissolved, except the procedure did anything but shrink the size of her lips. Instead, she essentially received the equivalent of a bee sting straight to the face. The saga, posted to the woman's account, @berthecn, enthralled social media onlookers, accumulating a whopping 14.7 million views. taken 4 antihistamines, hopefully goes down soon x The reaction was so alarming that the TikToker decided to call 111, the non-emergency phone number for the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, who subsequently 'sent an ambulance out because it was deemed a potential allergic reaction.' In the Accident and Emergency department, she explained that she 'felt quite dizzy,' and 'almost fainted.' The ambulance ride made one thing clear: This wasn't just an unfortunate reaction—it was a real medical concern that required immediate attention. 'It's really scary,' the TikToker admitted in a clip, the reality of the situation hitting her. seeing as everyone has made me panic Once she arrived at the hospital, the woman was given IV steroids that helped reduce the swelling significantly after a few hours, but she also learned some shocking news. 'I found out that the solution used,' she explains, 'also has an enzyme that bees have in their sting. I've basically discovered that I may be allergic to a bee sting.' This enzyme, hyaluronidase, is used in filler dissolver to break down hyaluronic acid, according to a paper published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology on the safe use of hyaluronidase. (Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and is often used in dermal fillers, as well as many skincare products, thanks to its moisture-retention and elasticity-boosting properties.) The authors say that 'wasp and bee stings contain more than one allergen, including hyaluronidase,' adding that cross-reactivity (when the immune system confuses one allergen for another similar one) can be a factor in these cases. Most people do not experience an anaphylactic reaction to fillers or filler desolvers, with the authors noting that the 'risk is extremely small and is lower than the quoted 0.1-percent incidence,' including delayed reactions and secondary exposure. The good news: Reactions like these, rare and frightening as they are, can usually be avoided. Patch tests are usually recommended when using a dermal filler dissolver that includes hyaluronidase in its formula, with a waiting period of 24 hours to catch delayed reactions. The bad news: Patch test guidelines aren't always followed as recommended. In this case, the woman said that her patch test was administered just a few minutes before her appointment. Despite this, the woman isn't eager to throw blame around for the incident. 'I don't want to fault this practitioner,' she said. 'She just made a mistake.' In an update posted to her account on June 30 (happily captioned with, 'I have my face back!), the woman shared the lessons she learned and insights she discovered about herself through the debacle. She tells her audience the swelling in her lips from the allergic reaction is 'almost fully dissolved.' I have my face back! Now, with her lips (almost) back to normal, she has realized she never needed filler to be happy in the first place, saying, 'I probably had complete body dysmorphia, because when I look at my lips now, I actually think they are beautiful.'

Why Lucky Girl Syndrome Is A Smart Leadership Strategy
Optimism in action: Leaders who project confidence and focus inspire teams to see opportunities in ... More every challenge. 'Lucky girl syndrome' sounds like another fleeting social media trend. How great is it that millions of young women are declaring that everything always works out for them? This TikTok trend is fueled by relentless positivity. However, digging deeper reveals a surprising insight. Leadership focus creates momentum, and belief shapes behavior. In leadership and career development, this isn't fluff. It's psychology. Call it cognitive framing. Call it strategic optimism. Leaders who cultivate a sense of expectancy are more likely to see opportunities that others miss. It first gained popularity on social media, where videos tagged #luckygirlsyndrome have garnered hundreds of millions of views. What started as a playful affirmation craze turned into a global conversation about mindset and the power of expectation. According to research highlighted by the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consulting, 'optimistic and resilient leaders find opportunity in crisis and can help teams quickly pivot and adapt strategies in fast-paced environments.' Without execution, you'll be stuck waiting for 'luck' to show up. However, in leadership, a 'lucky' mindset can set the tone for bold action, encouraging teams to move forward with confidence. Optimism Isn't Naive—It's Neuroscience At its core, 'lucky girl syndrome' is a case study of what psychologists call the 'Baader-Meinhof phenomenon' or frequency illusion: once you focus on something—an idea, a belief, a goal—you start to see evidence of it everywhere. For leaders, this means optimism isn't just motivational; it's also functional. The National Library of Medicine explored the psychology of those who believe in manifestation. In three studies, they developed a reliable and valid measure called the Manifestation Scale and found that over one-third of participants endorsed manifestation beliefs. Those who scored higher on the scale perceived themselves as more successful, had stronger aspirations for success and believed they were more likely to achieve future success. When a leader expects outcomes to unfold in their favor, they unconsciously prime their teams to take aligned action. It's not about ignoring problems. It's about approaching them with the assumption that solutions exist. A strong mindset is about training your focus and turning belief into bold, strategic moves. The Risk Of Magical Thinking Without Execution To be clear, belief alone doesn't build companies or transform teams. Optimism becomes counterproductive when it veers into denial or detachment. Leaders still need to ground their vision in data and create systems that support progress, allowing them to course-correct quickly. The power of the mindset lies in its pairing with action, which makes those actions more consistent and focused. Sustainable optimism requires pairing belief with rigorous reality checks. Ignoring data or dismissing valid concerns is where optimism turns dangerous. How Leaders Can Shift Into A Manifesting Mindset Rather than dismissing this as social media nonsense, consider its strategic implications. Consider phrases like: Successful leaders train their brains to look for possibilities and act on them. Leaders can start by: Framing the future in positive terms doesn't make you delusional. It makes you effective. Business is full of uncertainty. Luck is something you train your brain to notice. And the smartest leaders? They know that fortune favors the intentional.
