Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has called on the beef industry to follow new rules aimed at stopping foot-and-mouth disease and urged the public to report any illegal actions to help control the outbreak.
IOL previously reported that South Africa has been battling FMD for several months, prompting key trading partners, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, and China, to suspend imports of meat and related animal products from the country.
In response to the outbreak, the government has implemented new directives aimed at regulating the movement of cloven-hoofed livestock across the country. These directives require that all livestock movements be supervised and comply strictly with biosecurity measures. Only animals that meet these standards are allowed to move.

'Animals should only be moved if they have been checked and are free of foot and mouth disease. They should not be mixed with others in feedlots until their health status has been confirmed," Steenhuisen said.
"We're calling on maximum cooperation from the entire value chain, from farm level all the way through to consumer, to assist us in dealing with this particular matter, reporting unlawful behaviour where it is observed and also making sure there's strict adherence to the regulations. It's the only way we're going to get on top of foot and mouth disease in South Africa"
The minister also added that the government has allocated R43 million to purchase vaccines and has started vaccinating animals in affected areas, including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
"We've put aside R43 million departmental budget to date for the purchase of vaccines. Now we haven't used all of that yet. The first batch of 900,000 vaccines arrived in South Africa last week and we commenced with the vaccination over the weekend," he said.

According to the municipality, there is slow and sometimes disorderly development, which slows down spatial and economic transformation and contributes to spatial and economic inequalities. The municipality stated that it was not appropriately configured to serve each of the 18 traditional council areas independently and efficiently. 'In this case, it's not just the local leadership discord, as constantly evidenced between ward councillors, their ward committees, and the traditional councils, but also the service authorities across the spheres of government, who disregard the important coordination function assigned to the local government. This adds to multiple layers of authority that confuse the end user,' a report read. One of the objectives for the municipality was to strengthen relations and cooperation between it and the traditional rural leadership on issues about spatial planning and development. The framework proposed a spatial and planning approach structured to foster the independent administrative status of each traditional council. The MOU proposes various institutional arrangements that will improve coordination and accountability of stakeholders. The municipality stated that the interventions include homestead numbering, road naming, signage, traditional council directions, heritage promotion, and entry or exit point street cameras. According to the municipality, the current situation is that 90% of homesteads in the study area are unidentifiable, with no street addresses. IFP councillor Petros Mbonambi said this was the first time in 30 years that traditional leadership has been recognised. Mbonambi welcomed the initiative and consultative process with amaKhosi, saying that this will help the community. He wanted to see improvement in health and education facilities, as well as industrial development in these areas. 'If they want to rename the roads, they must not use politicians' names. Rather, use the names of the late amaKhosi. The IFP will keep an eye on this initiative to make certain that it is not used as a tool to repossess land belonging to the amaKhosi. We await the consultative process,' he said.

Steenhuisen slams Ramaphosa 'double standards' over deputy minister axing
DA leader and agriculture minister John Steenhuisen has strongly rebuked President Cyril Ramaphosa, accusing him of 'double standards' for axing deputy minister Andrew Whitfield, while ANC ministers 'lying to parliament' and 'accused of state capture' remained untouchable. Speaking during a debate on the vote on the division of revenue bill in the National Assembly, a visibly irate Steenhuisen suggested to MPs that Whitfield had been removed from his job as deputy trade and industry minister for raising awkward questions about the appointment of "dodgy" candidates to the board of the Industrial Development Corporation, and the debacle over the awarding of lotto licences to a politically connected consortium. The Presidency stunned on Thursday morning when it announced that Ramaphosa had invoked section 93 of the constitution to remove Whitfield from his position. Ramaphosa did not disclose his reasons for axing Whitfield, but government sources with intimate knowledge of the matter said it was related to his insubordination over his travelling to Washington at the height of stormy relations between South Africa and the US earlier this year as part of a DA delegation, without the president's approval. But taking MPs into his confidence on the issue, Steenhuisen told parliament that Whitfield's repeated written requests to travel were ignored and not responded to by Ramaphosa. 'The facts of this matter contradict this flimsy reasoning. In fact, on the 12 of February, deputy minister Whitfield had written to the president requesting permission to travel,' Steenhuisen said.

Consumer prices in South Africa poised to rise amid global pressures and Middle East conflict
Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday that inflation was mainly driven by faster price increases for food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing and utilities, and clothing and footwear. Consumer prices in South Africa are expected to tick upwards on the back of global pressures and rising oil prices in the wake of escalating war in the Middle East. This is despite the consumer price inflation (CPI) remaining unchanged at 2.8%, matching April's five-year low. Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday that inflation was mainly driven by faster price increases for food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing and utilities, and clothing and footwear. However, Patrick Kelly, chief director for price statistics at Stats SA, said these increases were offset by slower inflation in alcoholic beverages and tobacco, restaurants and accommodation services, and personal care and miscellaneous services while transport prices declined sharply. 'Food & non-alcoholic beverages is the only category that contributed to the monthly increase in the CPI. Meat, specifically beef, is a key factor behind the rise in food inflation,' Kelly said. 'The annual rate for meat jumped from 3.0% in April to 4.4% in May. In April, monthly increases for beef products ranged from 6.2% to 11.9%.' Paul Makube,senior agricultural economist at FNB Commercial, said they were not surprised at this development as prices at producer level surged across the livestock complex with average class A beef carcass prices breaching the R70/kg level for the first time in history. Makube said prices accelerated despite the disease outbreaks that have now complicated the price outlook and the domestic supply dynamics. 'The foot‑and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak is now in full swing, resulting in an export ban and a quarantine of affected establishments. The quarantine has created a short supply crunch due to the inability to slaughter,' Makube said. 'Further, the constrained import supplies due to avian influenza (AI)-induced ban on South Africa's biggest poultry meat supplier Brazil elicited further upside for prices particularly the mechanically deboned meat (MDM) which is used in the manufacturing of products such as polony, etc. SA is a net importer of MDM due to lack of domestic capacity.' However, Stats SA said fuel prices dropped by 1.1% between April and May, pulling the annual rate down to ‑14.9%. This was the largest annual decrease for fuel since October 2024 when the rate was -19.1%. Petrol is 15.9% and diesel 12.6% cheaper than a year ago. On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.2%, slightly below the 0.3% rise recorded in April, marking the lowest monthly increase in five months. The upside price pressures continued to outweigh fuel deflation as the core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs, was also steady at 3% year-on-year and remained its lowest reading since July 2021. This comes as Israel and Iran continue to exchange fire with missiles as hostilities escalate and the war enters the second week in the region while Israel also continues to bombard Palestine. Disruption in the Middle East could have far-reaching economic consequences as it could raise global oil prices, push inflation higher and force the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) to pause its monetary policy easing. A key concern is potential disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which about 18–19 million barrels per day, or roughly 20% of global oil consumption, passes. Nedbank economist Busisiwe Nkonki said inflation could drift upwards in the second half of the year, but still averaging a muted 3.5% in 2025. However, Nkonki said risks to the inflation outlook have worsened in recent days, as the rand weakened and global oil prices jumped due to the conflict in the Middle East.
