NRIAG: Shawal to Begin on March 30
Astronomical calculations by the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) have revealed that the first day of Shawal 1446 AH will be on Sunday, March 30, 2025, marking the beginning of Eid al-Fitr.
The new moon of Shawal will appear immediately after the conjunction occurs at exactly 1:00 PM Cairo local time on Saturday, Ramadan 29, 1446 AH, corresponding to March 29, 2025 (the sighting day).
The new crescent will remain visible in the sky of Mecca for 7 minutes and in Cairo for 11 minutes after sunset on the sighting day.
In other governorates of Egypt, the new crescent will be visible for durations ranging between 9 and 12 minutes.
As for Arab and Islamic capitals and cities, the new crescent will remain in the sky after sunset between 3 and 19 minutes.

The first parallel forum was held in South Korea in May, and the second now takes place in Egypt—"the heart of the Arab world"—highlighting the deep historical ties between the two civilizations. She noted that Chinese-Arab cultural exchange spans over a thousand years, rooted in active knowledge-sharing, trade, and scientific collaboration along the Silk Road. This included contributions in medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and travel, as documented by historic figures such as Ibn Battuta. Guo stressed that both civilizations have significantly advanced humanity by upholding shared values such as ethics, knowledge, tolerance, and the dignity of the individual. Guo stated that one of the forum's primary goals is to counter the notion that civilizations must clash. Instead, she emphasized that dialogue and coexistence lead to integration and harmony, and that mutual respect is essential for building a peaceful and prosperous global future. She called for expanded institutional partnerships, including reciprocal translations of classical texts, joint research, and academic exchanges between Chinese and Arab institutions. In his remarks, Professor Feng Jikang, President of Shandong Normal University, introduced the Confucian concept of 'shared beauty' as a vision for global harmony. He explored the ancient idea of Datong—"Great Unity"—as described by Confucius in the Book of Rites, where a just society is governed by virtue, honesty, and peaceful coexistence. Feng quoted Confucius's vision of a world without division or fear, where capable and ethical leaders are chosen, and neighbors live in trust and mutual respect. He noted that this concept has shaped Chinese thought for over two millennia and remains relevant today, forming part of China's modern vision for a shared future for humanity. He cited Chinese sociologist Fei Xiaotong's phrase: 'Each has its beauty, and by appreciating each other's beauty, we achieve harmony.' Feng stressed that such values are not abstract ideals but practical principles rooted in ancient wisdom, offering real solutions to today's divided world. He recalled President Xi Jinping's speech at the United Nations in 2015, where peace, justice, equality, democracy, and freedom were identified as shared human values. Feng concluded by urging the global community to adopt the philosophy of shared beauty, overcome isolationism, and work collectively to build a fairer, more ethical world grounded in respect and cooperation. The opening session was attended by leading academics, cultural figures, and Chinese experts in Arab studies, enriching the forum with intellectual diversity and depth. NRIAG: Egypt Lies 600 km Away from Seismic Belts
Rana Atef Dr. Sherif El-Hady, Head of the Earthquake Department at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, confirmed that Egypt's borders are about 600 kilometres away from the seismic belts, explaining that an earthquake is a sudden shake. The series of earthquakes that occurred in Egypt over the past few days are a result of unexpected seismic activity. El-Hady added, during a phone interview on the program "Al-Hayat Al-Youm" with journalist Mohamed Mostafa Sherdy, broadcast on Al-Hayat Channel, that the sudden seismic activity is due to the nature of the land, and it may subside for long periods. He emphasized that the recent earthquakes are not an indication of a large-scale earthquake or a disaster. He continued, 'The duration of the most recent earthquake was 12 seconds, and it could vary if you are farther from the coast. The farther you are, the shorter the duration. Earthquake - file CAIRO - 3 June 2025: Egypt among other countries felt an earthquake that struck earlier Tuesday, and its measuring recorded at a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. The Egyptian Red Crescent announced that its operations room detected an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, at a depth of 62 km, in the Dodecanese Islands border area with Turkey, 129 km south-southeast of Aydın, Turkey, at 11:17 a.m. The earthquake was felt by residents of Greater Cairo, the Delta, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh. The current situation is stable, and no reports of human or property damage have been received so far. Egypt has felt at least three strong earthquakes in less than a month. Is Egypt safe from destructive earthquakes? Sherif El-Hadi, head of the Seismology Department at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, explained in previous statements that Egypt is relatively safe from destructive earthquakes compared to other areas directly located on seismic belts. Although history indicates that the region may experience significant seismic activity in the long term, the timing of this event cannot be determined based on recent seismic activity. Although Egyptians have felt some recent tremors, these were mostly caused by earthquakes centered outside Egypt in seismically active areas. Egypt itself is not directly located on a seismic belt, and there is no indication that an unusually large earthquake is imminent in the near future based on these earthquakes. Recent Earthquakes and Their Feelings in Egypt Recently, some Egyptians have felt several earthquakes, all of which had their epicenters outside Egypt. This includes the earthquake that occurred at 2:00 AM Cairo local time on Tuesday, centered in Turkey. Another earthquake recently felt by Egyptians was centered south of the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. This region is known for its seismic activity, and earthquakes that occur in the Mediterranean are usually non-destructive to Egypt and do not pose any immediate threat to Egyptian territory. The Possibility of Predicting Earthquakes The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics confirmed that earthquakes cannot be predicted, and that the frequency of earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean region is normal, and the National Seismic Network monitors them in real-time.
