Servicemembers, deputies organize benefit ride for Wingate officer battling cancer
The story of Wingate Police Officer Eric Tallent is drawing more support, and now there's a benefit motorcycle ride being organized to help the officer in his cancer battle.
The Ride for a Cause benefit will happen Feb. 15, featuring motorcycle riders from the North Carolina National Guard, the Union County Sheriff's Office, and more. The goal is to help Tallent and his family as they deal with medical expenses.
Channel 9 profiled Tallent's battle after he was recently diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable brain tumor. Now, his community is rallying behind him and his family to support them through his treatments. Officer Tallent works at a tight-knit Wingate Police Department with only seven officers on staff. His chief described him as someone who loves to serve.
You can join the benefit ride for $30 per person, and all proceeds will go to the Tallent family. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 27, 700 N. Sutherland Avenue in Monroe.
Riders will start the trip at 10 a.m.

The dusting trend, also known as chroming or huffing, involves inhaling common household cleaners to get high for views online. The sensation causes brief euphoria but can cause instant, fatal damage, often due to heart failure, according to the Cleveland Clinic. After inhaling the keyboard cleaner, Renna went into cardiac arrest, spent a week unconscious in the intensive care unit, and then was declared brain-dead. Renna's parents described their late daughter as 'vivacious and caring and loyal.' Her father, Aaron O'Rourke, told 12 News that Renna loved to sing and lit up every room with her smile and laughter. 'She always said, 'I'm going to be famous, dad. Just you watch. I'm going to be famous,' and unfortunately, this is not under the most optimal of circumstances,' Aaron O'Rourke, told the outlet.. Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, the O'Rourke family is now working to honor Renna by spreading the word about the dangers of huffing for teens and parents. 'There's no ID required. It's odorless. It's everything kids look for. They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn't show in mom and dad's drug test,' Dana O'Rourke told AZ Family about access to the trendy chemicals. She added, 'Don't take your kid's word for it. Dig deep. Search their rooms. Don't trust — and that sounds horrible, but it could save their life.' A GoFundMe started to help the O'Rourke family with hospital bills, burial and therapy costs, and to spread awareness about huffing has surpassed its $5,000 goal and sits at over $9,000 at the time of publication.

Search for L.A. woman swept away by raging river scaled back due to dangerous conditions
A search for a 26-year-old Los Angeles woman swept away by fast-moving water in Sequoia National Park over Memorial Day weekend has been scaled back as river conditions remain too hazardous for rescue teams to enter. Jomarie Calasanz was last seen near the Paradise Creek Bridge along the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River in the park's foothills. Officials said she was with friends and family when she was caught in the cold, powerful current. After nine days of intensive searching by multiple agencies, National Park Service officials said crews have transitioned to 'limited continuous mode,' assigning fewer resources while continuing to monitor the river. Officials believe Calasanz could still be within park boundaries but said current conditions make it unsafe for divers to conduct an underwater search. Search efforts have included ground crews, canines, underwater cameras, helicopters and drones. 'We are thankful for the dedicated aid of our neighboring agencies and for all of the people who have been involved in the search for Jomarie,' NPS officials said. Park officials continue to urge visitors to stay out of the river and away from its banks, warning that runoff from melting snowpack has made the water both frigid and deceptively fast-moving. Even calm-looking sections can overpower experienced swimmers, and wet rocks near the river's edge are extremely slick. Public notices remain posted in the area, and teams plan to reassess their options once the water level drops, likely in the coming weeks. Fundraiser started after 5-vehicle crash ‘totaled' family's only car
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo family has launched a GoFundMe online fundraiser after a crash involving five vehicles reportedly resulted in their only car being 'wrecked and left totaled.' The crash occurred on Wednesday, June 4, near the 600 block of West 29th Street. According to a San Angelo Police Department officer at the scene, the collision happened after a white Chevrolet Suburban traveling westbound on 29th Street crashed into a silver Nissan Sentra that was traveling eastbound on the same street. The Suburban then left the roadway, striking a blue Chevy Colorado before continuing into a parking lot just outside of a nearby Cato Fashions store located in a strip mall. The vehicle then struck a silver Dodge Challenger, which in turn was pushed into a dark gray Dodge Challenger. The SAPD told a Concho Valley Homepage reporter that the driver of the Suburban may have suffered a medical complication while driving, causing the crash. The motorist was transported to the hospital. RELATED: 5 vehicle crash sends 1 person to the hospital The fundraiser's webpage states that the family of four's sole car was 'wrecked and left totaled' due to the incident. Johnny Guinan, the fundraiser's organizer, said he now owes $15,000 despite the car's estimated value being 'only $5,000.' Worsening matters for the family is their financial situation before the five-vehicle crash. Guinan stated on the webpage that an injury caused by a crash that occurred approximately one year ago has 'drained' the family's savings and forced him to switch jobs. 'We are just asking for some help getting a new car or getting ours fixed; any little bit helps,' the GoFundMe reads. As of the time of publication, the fundraiser has garnered $25 for the family.
