Miami Herald12-04-2025

Luka Doncic recorded 39 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and the Los Angeles Lakers clinched the Western Conference's No. 3 seed with a solid 140-109 victory over the visiting Houston Rockets on Friday night.
LeBron James had 14 points and eight assists in 22 minutes before sitting out the final 19:27 with an apparent injury. James, who has been bothered by a left groin injury, grimaced just before being pulled in the third quarter and had his left leg/hip area taped but the team didn't immediately announce an ailment.
Austin Reaves contributed 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Dorian Finney-Smith added 18 points on six 3-pointers off the bench for the Lakers (50-31). Finney-Smith matched his season best for treys, previously achieved against Houston on March 31.
Rui Hachimura scored 16 points for Los Angeles, which shot 60.9 percent from the field and made 19 of 37 3-point attempts.
Cam Whitmore established career highs of 34 points and seven 3-pointers for the Rockets (52-28), who held out several players for the second straight game. Reed Sheppard scored 14 points, Nate Williams added 12 and Aaron Holiday tallied 11.
Houston previously clinched the No. 2 seed and on Friday held out Dillon Brooks (rest), Tari Easton (left leg), Alperen Sengun (personal reasons), Jabari Smith Jr. (left groin), Amen Thompson (rest) and Fred VanVleet (right ankle).
Jalen Green scored seven points in nearly 15 first-half minutes before watching the second half in street clothes. Green is bidding to play in all 82 regular-season games for the second straight campaign.
Houston shot 45.6 percent from the field, including 18 of 51 from 3-point range.
Doncic scored 24 points in the first half, when the Lakers shot 65.9 percent from the field while taking a 78-56 advantage. Whitmore had 13 in the half for Houston.
Los Angeles led 38-32 after the first quarter and continued its strong play in the second and took a 65-44 lead on Finney-Smith's trey with 4:54 remaining. Hachimura drained a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left for the 22-point halftime bulge.
The Lakers continued to possess control in the third quarter. Doncic made three free throws with 0.1 seconds left to give Los Angeles a 107-87 lead.
Jarred Vanderbilt's dunk made it 121-98 with 6:22 remaining in the half, leaving the only suspense to involve Bronny James. He entered with 4:23 to play and made his only 3-point attempt but missed his other three shots.

New York Jets Rookie Named Draft-Day Steal After OTAs

New York Jets Rookie Named Draft-Day Steal After OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets may have found something in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Jets selected Georgia wideout Arian Smith, who has been the talk of the town at Jets OTAs. Advertisement New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has given high praise to his rookie wideout. "Arian has some juice, don't he?" Glenn said. "He can run and he's bouncy. He's a really good athlete. I thought the first day he went out there and was really focused on making sure that [he] sees through the ball to bring it in." Smith could be the right fit to pair alongside star receiver Garrett Wilson is he continues to impress the coaching staff. Smith's standout trait is his speed, posting a 4.36 40-time at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Smith wasn't just a football player for the Bulldogs. The former four-star football recruit committed to Georgia as a two-sport athlete, running track and field on top of his responsibility on the gridiron. Advertisement Smith was a first-team All-American selection for track and field in 2021, with his specialty being the 100-meter dash. Smith retired from track and field in 2023, and received a much bigger role in Georgia's offense the following season, leading the team with 817 receiving yards in 2024, while also adding four touchdowns. Smith's performance at OTAs and his physical traits have led to high praise from not just the coaching staff, but also the press. Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski tabbed Smith as the draft-day steal at wide receiver after OTAs, high praise for a Day-3 pick. "Raw speed is so tantalizing, because it can be weaponized to tilt the field in the oense's favor. Defenses must take stock of a real speedster on every down and consistently defend all three levels." Sobleski wrote. "Smith has that caliber of speed. He needs to show throughout the summer that he can make the plays available to him. If he does, the Jets will have the type of weapon that should play well with an athletic quarterback in Justin Fields since the defense must account for him running at all times." Report: Steelers back to pursuing Dolphins Pro Bowl TE

The Steelers-Dolphins trade rollercoaster continues — as insider Adam Schefter has provided a surprising update regarding Miami's Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith. Earlier in the day, Schefter reported that the Steelers were unlikely to pursue a trade for Smith — but that stance has since changed, as the well-respected insider presented the following update on the situation: Advertisement "Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source." Acquiring Smith is beginning to emulate that of the Steelers' pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk — which featured new and conflicting updates on a daily basis. If the Steelers pull off the blockbuster trade for Smith, it remains to be seen how his inclusion will impact TEs Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington's usage on offense. Report: Rockets could need pay cuts to retain Jeff Green, Jae'Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday

Report: Rockets could need pay cuts to retain Jeff Green, Jae'Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday Veterans Jeff Green, Jae'Sean Tate, and Aaron Holiday might need to take paycuts in order to return to the Rockets in 2025-26, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic. The Rockets will be a much more expensive team in the NBA's 2025-26 season, owing largely to salary increases for Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green. Depending on moves this offseason, Houston could be in luxury tax territory. The Rockets also have at least two younger prospects — Reed Sheppard and Cam Whitmore — that they would like to find more minutes for. With those types of considerations in mind, the 2025-26 Rockets might not have as much room in the budget for veteran players near the end of the bench. In 2024-25, Jeff Green, Jae'Sean Tate, and Aaron Holiday made $8.0 million, $7.6 million, and $4.7 million, respectively. While Houston seems to have some level of interest in retaining each of them, it might require a paycut for those players to stick around. Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic: A larger chunk of playing time for Sheppard would diminish veteran Aaron Holiday's role. Holiday emerged as a trusted option under Udoka over the past two seasons. He has a $4.9 million team option for next season, but the Rockets, who have expressed a desire to retain him, would likely wait and see how the rest of the roster pans out, along with the market, before circling back. Jeff Green and Tate, both of whom Houston is fond of, fall into a similar category. There's a possibility that only veteran minimum contracts would be available. Green recently expressed interest in a return, and Tate is a five-year NBA veteran who has only played for the Rockets over that time. All three are beloved in Houston's locker room and looked upon fondly as veteran leaders and mentors. Green was a consistent rotation player as recently as 2023-24, and Tate and Holiday had rotation stints in 2024-25. The latter two are accomplished defensively, where Houston ranked in the NBA's top five last season. So, there is definitely appeal to having them around as insurance options for head coach Ime Udoka. However, because of the changing composition of the roster around them, each might need to take a paycut in order to stick around. Time will tell if they choose to do so. The Rockets are allowed to negotiate with their own free agents as soon as the 2025 NBA Finals conclude, and negotiations with other teams and players across the league can begin on June 30. Minimum salaries are slotted according to NBA experience, though even the highest (for a player with 10+ years of experience, such as Green) is still below $4 million annually. For Green and Tate, a minimum deal would be less than half of their 2024-25 salary. More: As free agency looms, Jeff Green hopeful of re-signing with Rockets
