Should I fix a faulty stereo before selling my car?

Telegraph19-03-2025

Our 2017 Peugeot 2008 suffers from an intermittent problem whereby the radio stops working, with no sound from the parking sensors, satnav or phone. After many attempts the main dealer gave up trying to fix it; another Peugeot dealer says it needs a new radio at a cost of £1,350. The car has only done 45,000 miles and is in otherwise good condition, with a full service history. I want to sell it, but should I replace the radio or offer it for sale as-is, with the radio 'gaga'?

Dear MM,
Dicky radios in Peugeots of this era are not uncommon. As you've found, they can be very expensive to fix. Indeed, many 208 and 2008 owners report a similar intermittent functionality in the infotainment unit – the box with the screen that sits in the dashboard – with some even saying that the radio can shut down completely from time to time, then spring back to life for no apparent reason.
Some of these owners say that updating the radio's firmware (the software on which it operates) can fix many of the problems. Your Peugeot dealer should be able to do this (and shouldn't charge very much) so it might be worth a try before you go any further.
If that doesn't solve the problem, contact an aftermarket head unit repair specialist, such as Cartronics, to see whether they've heard of this issue before; even if they haven't, they might be able to offer a fix at a fraction of the cost of a new head unit.
Either of these options would be preferable to selling the car with a head unit fault. However, if neither works out it's worth trying to sell the car via one of the car-buying websites, mentioning the fault in your description.
Hopefully a dealer with the contacts to sort the problem cheaply will emerge. Note that because of the fault you'll probably get slightly less than you would have for a fully functioning car, but not as much of a loss as the £1,350 that a replacement head unit would set you back.

Major Stellantis car plant in Sochaux to restart production on June 6

PARIS, June 5 (Reuters) - Stellantis' ( opens new tab car plant in Sochaux in eastern France is expected to be restart production on Friday after a few days of stoppage due to the breakdown of its new-generation Chinese stamping press, a Stellantis spokesman told Reuters. The outage came at a critical time of precarious supplies, as the car industry faces a new crisis linked to restrictions on the export of rare earth magnetic materials from China. The press, introduced in 2020 for an investment of 33 million euros, allows great versatility in manufacturing different body parts for the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs. Out of service since Monday, the press is due to restart on Friday morning and, if the tests are successful, car production will resume soon after, the spokesperson added. The disruption, which resulted in the loss of 1,000 cars a day at one of Stellantis' main factories - which employs 3,000 workers - came at an unfortunate time, just a few days after new CEO Antonio Filosa visited the site after his appointment was announced.

Peugeot's e-208 now does 268 miles of range and gets bidirectional charging

Electric The hybrid also receives a small power boost, peaking at 145bhp Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Nope, not quite the GTI-coated news many are hoping for, but Peugeot has issued the 208 supermini with a few minor upgrades across the lineup. At least it's something. For starters, the e-208's largest battery option, a 48.1kWh pack, now delivers an extra 14 miles of range to a new WLTP total of 268 miles. That's connected to an unchanged 156bhp electric motor. Advertisement - Page continues below Its onboard cable - 7kW as standard or 11kW optional - has also been recast to offer bidirectional charging. It means vehicle-to-load technology for the first time in the e-208, allowing a pulse of up to 3kW to power external devices. The 208 hybrid also benefits from a slight power boost, with its 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder now offered in two increased outputs: 110 or 145bhp. That's a jump of around 10bhp from before. You might like Peugeot has used the refresh to introduce a new range-topping trim across the board too, dubbed 'GT Premium'. It'll add wireless phone charging, Alcantara upholstery with green stitching and heated massage front seats. These build on the existing features, include multicolour ambient lighting, a 10in infotainment screen and a competitively-sized boot that stows up to 311 litres of goods. New Peugeot 208 and 2008 GT Premium trim adds Alcantara, more tech and boosted EV range

A new Peugeot 208 is set to arrive next year, but the French firm is still looking to keep the current model competitive - adding a new GT Premium version and increasing the range of the all-electric E-208 to a maximum of 268 miles. The new GT Premium trim is also offered in the 208's crossover sibling, the 2008, representing the most lavish and best-equipped edition in the line-up. Available to order now, the 208 GT Premium is priced from £28,295 with a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine, from £30,100 as a Hybrid, and from £34,000 for the E-208. The 2008 GT Premium is priced at £35,095 with the 128bhp PureTech petrol, £35,870 in Hybrid guise, and £39,310 for the electric E-2008. Peugeot's driver assist pack plus also comes as standard, adding adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality and active lane-keep assist. On the outside, the 208 GT Premium gets 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels (the 2008 gets 18-inch wheels), three-claw daytime running lights and aluminium door sills with Peugeot lettering. Both the E-208 and E-2008 GT Premium get a heat pump as standard, which not only reduces energy consumption in colder months, but also has improved the range in the E-208 by 14 miles to 268 miles - improving on the new Vauxhall Corsa Electric Long Range and its 266-mile maximum. The 7kW and optional 11kW onboard chargers now come with bi-directional Vehicle-to-load capability on both the E-208 and E-2008 GT Premium models. The 208 Hybrid is offered in two states: there's a new 109bhp version replacing the old 99bhp model, and a 144bhp Hybrid 145 edition replacing the Hybrid 134. The latter has only just arrived on Stellantis products this year and in the 208 it's good for a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds while delivering claimed efficiency of up to 65mpg. The 2008 Hybrid is only offered with the more powerful of the two powertrains. Buy a car with Auto Express.
