Wales players train in brutal Japanese heat in bid to end losing streak

Wales Onlinea day ago

Wales' first Test against Japan is just six days away, and the squad have been preparing in Kitakyushu in search of their all-important win. Matt Sherratt is back at the helm for the time being - hired on an interim basis while the search for a permanent head coach goes on.
Wales were given a warm welcome six years ago for the 2019 World Cup, and they were afforded that same luxury this time around. Even before they arrived in Japan, schoolchildren sang the Welsh national anthem at Kokura Station in anticipation of their arrival. Them, when the players arrived three days ago, the Japanese hospitality became even more apparent.
Holding banners, Welsh flags and red jerseys, the Japanese public welcomed Wales with open arms. The banner read: 'In 2019, we became family. Welcome back, Wales.'
Over in Kitakyushu, it'll be around 30°C throughout the week leading up to Saturday's Test. While this may not seem like a ridiculous temperature to play in, the humidity stands at around 86% on some days, with the players set to play in a pressure cooker environment. With those humidity levels at that heat, due to the body's reduced ability to cool itself through sweat evaporation, It could feel as high as 45°C
Back in Wales, ahead of leaving for the Far East, coaches prepared the players by putting on the heating in the gym while Wales stars got to work on the rowing machines, simulating the sweltering conditions out in Japan.
The squad have been preparing for their match in the Kitakyushu sun over the weekend, and also took to the streets of the city to enjoy some downtime.

He said: "I have decided to transfer overseas. As a result, I will be leaving the club. First of all, I am sorry for making this decision when the team is in a difficult situation. "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the supporters for the love they have shown me over the past two years. "When I heard my name being chanted at the opening game of this season, I felt a great sense of responsibility and awareness. "I wanted to make this team win, and I wanted to make all the supporters smile every week. This feeling was my driving force. "The atmosphere at the club is one of a big family. That is why I wanted to convey my passion for football and my feelings for the team on the pitch at this welcoming club. "However, I came to the conclusion that it would be best to challenge myself overseas at this time. "I know that not everyone will be happy to see me off, but I will fight tooth and nail so that one day you will all think that this decision was the right one and feel proud of me. "I would like to thank everyone involved with Albirex Niigata for the support that allowed me to grow here. It is thanks to all of you that I was able to build the foundation as a professional football player. Tom Rogic to make stunning Celtic return three years after emotional exit and disappearance from public eye

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TOM ROGIC struggled to hide his emotions as he bid farewell to Celtic back in 2022. More than three years on, a stunning Parkhead return for the Wizard of Oz has been confirmed. He would endure a slow start to life at Parkhead due to injuries and returned to Australia on loan with Melbourne Victory in January 2014. A groin injury would hamper his return down under and two operations ended up cruelly denying him a chance to feature at the 2014 World Cup. Rogic wouldn't return to action until March 2015, and he'd soon establish himself as a firm Parkhead favourite. The dynamic midfielder became a regular for the Hoops during the 2015/16 season and would continue to be a popular figure for the next seven year. He developed a knack of scoring in huge games, with several Old Firm goals and cup final crackers among them. Rogic won six league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups during his glittering time in Glasgow. Ange Postecoglou's arrival as manager in the summer of 2021 brought plenty of change to Celtic, but Rogic remained and played a significant role in that season's double success. But as that campaign came to a close, the Hoops announced Rogic would depart at the end of the season. He was giving a rousing send-off and was visibly emotional as he was subbed-off during the final day 6-0 win over Motherwell. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Rogic was also named the PFA Men's Footballer of the Year in his final season at Celtic Park. He then spent a season with West Brom before retiring aged just 30 in October 2023. He revealed he was doing so for family reasons and has stayed completely out of the public eye ever since. Rogic said at the time: "After careful consideration I have made the decision to retire from professional football. I have always been rather private with things in my personal life but I feel given the significance, I think it is important for people to understand why and how I have made my decision. "Throughout the past 7 years, my wife and I have been on an immensely challenging journey with fertility issues. After years of trying and many failed rounds of IVF, my wife and I were fortunate enough to welcome the birth of our daughter in 2021. "I have loved every minute of being a dad and consider it my greatest achievement in life. After experiencing some more struggles and heartache with fertility treatment, we have recently received the amazing news that our family is growing and we will be expecting twins in 2024. "Given our past and how hard we have fought for this, along with the challenges that will come with having twins and a two-year-old, now seems like the right time to give my focus and attention to what is the most important thing in my life - my family." But now he's about to return. Celtic have confirmed that a team of Hoops Legends will face Man Utd Legends at Celtic Park on September 6 this year in a charity match. And Rogic has been revealed as one of the new additions to the Legends XI. 4 On his impending return, he said: 'It's really exciting to be coming back for the Legends match against Manchester United. My time with Celtic was such a huge part of my career and there were so many amazing memories, so to come back and pull on the Hoops again will be a very special moment. "There was always such a big focus from the Club on helping others and the work that the Foundation do is phenomenal, so it's a privilege to be involved and I'm sure the supporters will come out in their numbers as they always do.' Goalkeeper Joe Hart, who retired at the end of the 2023/24 season, will also link-up with the legends team for the first time. Emma Raducanu forced to change clothes at Wimbledon after sparking anger

Emma Raducanu forced to change clothes at Wimbledon after sparking anger The British star 'enraged' some at SW19 after breaking the long-standing rule Raducanu was accused of 'arrogance' at Wimbledon earlier this year Emma Raducanu kicks off her 2025 Wimbledon campaign on Monday afternoon as she faces Welsh teenager Mimi Xu in the opening round of the women's singles. The 22-year-old heads into the Championships as the British number one and, while she "doesn't expect much" from herself at SW19 this year, will be hoping to make it beyond the fourth round for the first time. That journey gets under way on Court One on Monday, as she faces the 17-year-old rising talent Xu, who hails from Swansea. ‌ Raducanu's return to SW19 comes after she sparked anger there earlier this year, having been accused of breaking a 150-year-old rule at the All England Club. ‌ In March, she was accused of "arrogance" by members of the club for allegedly ignoring the long-standing dress code at SW19. The rules require players to wear all-white while using the courts for matches and practice sessions, and also extends to the main Grand Slam event in the summer. However, the 2021 US Open champion was instead said to have taken to the courts at the club while wearing "whatever she want[ed]," having allegedly "rocked up in a pink outfit" for a practice session. Article continues below At the time, the Daily Mail reported that her behaviour had been "enraging members" of the famous club. "It's so unfair," one angry member told the publication. "Who does she think she is? "Just because she's won the US Open doesn't mean she can wear whatever she wants.' ‌ The All England Club rules - which were first introduced in the 1880s - states that players must wear "suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white" while on the courts, although this also applies 'from the point at which the player enters the court surround'. An amendment was made to the rules in 2023 to allow female players to wear dark undershorts under their kit due to period concerns, but the regulations remain strict. For example, permitted white outfits do "not include off-white or cream", while only a 10mm trim of another single colour is allowed around necklines or the cuffs of sleeves. Article continues below Raducanu has seemingly learnt her lesson as she has been seen in training ahead of this year's tournament wearing an all-white outfit on the championship courts. She is certainly not the first start to have caused a stir with their choice of attire at Wimbledon, with some of the game's biggest stars also accused of not following the dress code. In 2022, Nick Kyrgios ruffled a few feathers by arriving on court in a pair of red Nike Jordan shoes and matching cap before changing into his white attire, while even the legendary Roger Federer also got told off for wearing orange-soled shoes on the hallowed courts.
