The Court of Arbitration for Sport said its judges gave an urgent decision dismissing Drogheda's appeal that was heard on Monday. On Tuesday, UEFA will start making the draws for qualifying rounds in the third-tier European competition. Advertisement Drogheda and Silkeborg of Denmark qualified for the Conference League second preliminary round but are owned by the Trivela Group from the United States. UEFA rules to protect sporting integrity do not allow teams from a multi-club network to enter the same competition if one owner has 'decisive influence' over management of both. CAS said the three judges agreed UEFA committed key information to Drogheda and that by a 2-1 majority 'rejected (the club's) submissions on alleged unequal treatment by UEFA.' Other cases involving Manchester City, Manchester United, AC Milan, Brighton and Aston Villa in the past two years were resolved by one of the ownership stakes being placed into a blind trust for the season. A UEFA expert panel also imposed transfer bans and limited cooperation between clubs in question. Lyon's American owner John Textor has a 43% stake in Palace though with limited decision-making power. In the latest case, Silkeborg took priority with UEFA to get the Conference League place because it finished higher in the Danish league this season than Drogheda did in the Irish league last year. Four Atletico ultras get suspended jail for Vinicius effigy
Vinicius has been the target of numerous racist incidents since arriving in Madrid in 2018 (OSCAR DEL POZO) Four Atletico Madrid ultras have been handed suspended jail sentences for hanging a dummy of Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior from a bridge in what police deemed a "hate crime", judicial sources said on Monday. A dark-skinned effigy wearing the Brazil forward's jersey was hung by the neck from a highway bridge near Real Madrid's training ground in January 2023 ahead of the club's match against Atletico. Advertisement Police in May 2023 arrested four men -- all of them members of Frente Atletico, one of Atletico Madrid's ultra fan groups -- who were suspected of being responsible. Under a plea deal with the prosecution which still must be confirmed by a court, the four pleaded guilty to the crimes of making threats against the player and infringing his fundamental rights, the judicial sources said. Three of the men accepted a sentence of 14 months, while one was given a 22-month sentence for also distributing images of the act online. The four will not serve jail time since in Spain it is customary for those sentenced to under two years for non-violent crimes to have their sentence suspended if they have no criminal record. The four have signed a letter of apology addressed to Vinicius, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish football federation, and will be required to complete a training programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination, La Liga said in a statement. Jail sentences handed out to quartet behind hanging of Vinicius Junior effigy
Four people have been convicted of hate crimes and threats against Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior, following an infamous incident in 2023 ahead of Madrid derby. The members of the organisation have been linked to Atletico Madrid ultra group Frente Atletico. It was ahead of a derby clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in 2023 in the Copa del Rey, when the night before the game a blow-up doll wearing a Vinicius shirt was hung from a bridge on one of the Spanish capital's main motorways. It was also in the vicinity of the Valdebebas training ground, increasing the chance of the Brazilian and his teammates seeing the effigy. Accompanying the effigy was a large banner saying 'Madrid hates Real'. Four sentenced in connection with incident After two years of investigation and court proceedings, four people have been convicted of hate crimes and making threats, as per Diario AS. One has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for the hate crime of racism, and a further seven months for making threats. They received a heavier sentence as a result of having publicised the act on social media. They have also received fines between €720 and €1,084. Increased conviction rate in Spanish football La Liga were the first to pursue the case in court, and until last year, Spanish football had never seen a jail sentence handed out due to hate crimes. However with the torrent of abuse Vinicius has received, there has been an effort, whether sufficient or not, to step up measures against racial persecution. There have now been several convictions handed out though, this the most harsh of the punishments given out. Nevertheless it remains an all too common issue in Spanish football.
