Search committee invites applications for Bharathiar University V-C
COIMBATORE: The recently constituted vice-chancellor (V-C) search committee of Bharathiar University has invited applications for the post of V-C from eligible candidates till June 8.
A notification released on Wednesday by the nodal officer of the search committee stated that the higher education department has constituted a search committee, to recommend three names to the government, to appoint the V-C of Bharathiar University. The search committee invited applications from distinguished academicians with the highest level of competence and possessing the educational qualifications and experience as notified in the Bharathiar University Act.
Interested candidates may download the prescribed application format from the university website and send the filled application via e-mail. A hard copy along with supporting documents proving eligibility and academic credentials, should be by post titled "Application for the post of the VC, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore" before June 8, the notification added.
Association of University Teachers Vice-President P Thirunavukkarasu welcomed this move and told TNIE that last year, the higher education department had released a notification to fill key posts of 'Registrar' and 'Controller of Examinations' at Bharathiar University. He alleged that after receiving applications, the selection process was stalled. He urged that, like the V-C post, the higher education department should fill the other key posts in the university.

PUNE: Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday said that in military operations, it is the outcome that matters more than the losses suffered. His comments come days after India admitted to losing a few fighter jets during Operation Sindoor, carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking at a special lecture on 'Future Wars and Warfare' at Savitribai Phule University in Pune, General Chauhan said, 'Professional military forces are not affected by setbacks and losses.' Addressing questions on the losses, he added, 'When I was asked about losses on our side... I said these are not important. The results are important. It would not be very correct to talk about losses. Suppose you go to a cricket match and you win, by any means, then there's no question about how many wickets, balls, players.' Stressing the importance of adaptability in the armed forces, he said, 'You should be able to understand what went wrong, need to rectify your mistake and go again. You cannot sit down in fear.' As TNIE earlier reported, when asked whether Pakistani forces shot down an Indian jet or more during Operation Sindoor, General Chauhan told Bloomberg TV on Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, 'What is important is that, not the jet being down, but why they were being down, what mistakes were made, that are important.' He added, 'The good part is that we are able to understand the tactical mistake which we made, remedy it, rectify it, and then implement it again after two days and flew all our jets again, targeting at long range.' While stressing 'numbers are not important,' he also denied Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's claim that the Pakistan Air Force had downed six Indian jets, including four Rafale fighters, during the brief military confrontation. His comments mark the first clear public admission from the Indian military that some aircraft were lost during the four-day conflict under Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched by India on May 7 in response to the brutal killing of 26 Indian tourists in Pahalgam. Explaining the objective behind the operation, General Chauhan said, 'The thinking behind Op Sindoor was (also) that Pakistan should not be able to hold India hostage to terrorism. India is not going to live under the shadow of terror and nuclear blackmail.' He also said, 'What happened in Pahalgam was profound cruelty towards the victims... because all were killed with headshots in front of their families and their children, and they were shot in the name of religion... India has been the victim of a maximum terror acts... almost 20,000 people have been killed.'

Meet Mangayarkarasi, the ‘Florence Nightingale' from TN's Virudhunagar
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Friday (May 30) marked the culmination of the journey which K Alamelu Mangayarkarasi of Virudhunagar embarked on 17 years ago as a nurse in a PHC in Arattavadi, a remote village in Tiruvannamalai that was infamous for its high number of home deliveries. Mangayarkarasi, who is now serving in the government hospital in Srivilliputhur, has been honoured with the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in recognition of her exemplary contribution in several areas including obstetrics and family welfare. Speaking to TNIE, the 40-year-old recalled how her path to nursing began. 'I wanted to become a teacher but didn't get enough marks. So, I pursued diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery. During college, my mother Philomina would write letters urging me to see the value of this noble profession. Her words still motivate me,' she said.

Summer special camp at Ananthapuramu Headquarters for children of police personnel ends
ANANTAPUR: The Summer Special Camp for children of police personnel at Ananthapuramu District Police Headquarters concluded on a high note, celebrating learning and community spirit. A major highlight was the successful implementation of the 'Read English – Write English – Speak English' initiative, supported by TNIE. Launched on May 1 at Rakshak Pre-Primary School, the camp saw participation from 150 children and focused on holistic development through both educational and recreational activities. The English programme, designed by National Youth Awardee and MyBharat Volunteers Coordinator Bisathi Bharath, enabled children to build language skills by reading, writing, and speaking using the daily newspaper. The initiative was sponsored by Vijay Sai, founder of SAI Trust, who ensured each child received a copy of The New Indian Express daily. At the closing ceremony, Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh, IPS, lauded the programme, calling it a 'powerful step towards nurturing future-ready citizens.'
