Samsung SDI ready to roll out 46-series batteries: CEO
Samsung SDI President and CEO Choi Joo-sun said Wednesday the company is poised to start mass production of its new 46-series cylindrical batteries for electric vehicles, an upgraded version of the smaller 21700 batteries.
'We have secured customers for these batteries and have submitted sample products (to them),' said Choi during a press briefing at the InterBattery 2025 exhibition on Wednesday in Gangnam, Seoul, while declining to disclose specifics, citing confidentiality.
The 46-series cylindrical battery, measuring 46 millimeters in diameter, is called a 'game changer' for its enhanced energy capacity and output and an emerging form factor selected by carmakers looking to power their high-performance electric vehicles. Samsung SDI has displayed the new lineup with four variants: 4680, 4695, 46100 and 46120 — all sharing a 46 mm diameter but differing in length (80 mm, 95 mm, 100 mm and 120 mm, respectively) in its exhibition but, while its rival LG Energy Solution also showcased the advanced tech.
Regarding the company's US operations, Choi said, 'This year, we are taking a rather conservative approach on (whether to build) our own North American plant due to a notable decline in the (EV) demand compared to last year. Nonetheless, we are assessing our options, as long-term growth remains a top priority.'
Choi added that the first battery cell manufacturing plant of NextStar Energy in the US, a joint venture with Stellantis, has ramped up production faster than expected, with the US Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit projected to be reflected in the first quarter of this year.
While taking a cautious approach to completing the second plant of NextStar Energy and a joint venture facility with General Motors by 2027 and 2026, respectively, due to a downturn in the EV demand, Choi noted the company is considering meeting the construction deadline for now.
When asked whether Samsung SDI plans to lower the operation rate of its Hungarian plant following Trump's proposed 25 percent tariffs on EU goods, Choi said, 'Our Hungarian facility is currently operating at much lower rates driven by a significant decline in customer demand compared to the past. Unfortunately, I cannot share specific figures (on the rate) due to confidentiality.'
Choi projected that the company is expected to see a turnaround from the second quarter of next year while pledging to advance its technological prowess through investments even in the face of ongoing trade disruptions.
Commenting on the recent business tie-up with Hyundai Motor Group on robotics, Choi hinted at bolstering a partnership with the auto giant on electric vehicles as well.

LS Electric, Spain's Power Electronics partner to expand in North American energy market
LS Electric, a Korean producer of power solutions, announced Thursday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Power Electrics, a specialist in power conversion systems, ramping its efforts to penetrate the North American power market. The agreement was signed at Power Electronics' headquarters in Valencia, Spain, and marks a strategic collaboration focused on the supply of key power equipment, including transformers for energy storage systems. Executives from both companies, including LS Electric Chairman Koo Ja-kyun and Power Electronics CEO David Salvo, attended the signing ceremony. Power Electronics is recognized as a global leader in the renewable energy sector, particularly in North America, where it holds around 60 percent market share in PCS for solar and ESS projects. With over 2,800 solar and 315 ESS projects under its belt, the company has surpassed 120 gigawatt-hours in cumulative PCS installations worldwide. Under the agreement, LS Electric will prioritize Power Electronics' high-capacity PCS in its ESS projects across North America and Asia. In return, Power Electronics will expand the use of LS Electric's advanced distribution transformers and other power solutions in its renewable energy initiatives. 'Amid the turning point of power market trends driven by the energy transition, we expect to significantly upgrade our business competitiveness by strengthening partnerships with global top players,' a company representative stated. 'We will actively pursue business development in rapidly growing renewable energy markets such as North America and Europe to achieve visible outcomes.'

Samsung SDI expands ESS push with new supply deal to Europe's Tesvolt
Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI announced Wednesday that it has signed a contract to supply its flagship energy storage equipment to Tesvolt, one of Europe's leading providers of commercial energy storage systems. Under the agreement, Samsung SDI will supply its Samsung Battery Box 1.0 to Tesvolt through the first quarter of 2026 and begin supplying the upgraded SBB 1.5 starting in the second quarter. Both models will be integrated into Tesvolt's energy storage solutions. The companies did not disclose the financial details or the volume of units covered by the contract. 'We have been supplying ESS batteries to Tesvolt since 2017. With this new SBB supply contract, we expect to further strengthen our partnership,' a Samsung SDI official said. 'We will accelerate our expansion in the global market, including Europe.' SBBs are 6-meter-long containerized battery energy storage equipment that include battery cells, modules and racks. The upgraded SBB 1.5 features a 37 percent increase in capacity, delivering up to 5.26 megawatt-hours, compared to its predecessor. It also enhances safety by adopting Samsung SDI's proprietary fire prevention technology, which directly injects fire-suppressant materials into the cells to prevent thermal runaway and reduce fire risk. The SBB 1.5 received a CES Innovation Award at CES 2025, the world's largest tech show held in Las Vegas. As part of its strategy to expand its presence in the ESS market and diversify beyond the electric vehicle sector, currently impacted by slowing demand, Samsung SDI is pursuing deeper collaborations with European ESS companies. At InterBattery Europe 2025, held in May in Munich, Germany, Samsung SDI highlighted its energy storage system capabilities, including the SBB 1.5. The company also noted Tesvolt's interest in further collaboration, quoting Tesvolt as saying, 'Samsung SDI offers a solution that precisely meets the needs of energy storage system operators.'

Volvo Construction Equipment to expand Korean plant
Swedish heavy machinery builder commits largest share of $264m global investment to Changwon factory in South Gyeongsang Province Volvo Construction Equipment has decided to expand and upgrade its Korean production site in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, as the Swedish heavy machinery manufacturer looks to better cope with growing customer demand worldwide. According to Volvo CE on Wednesday, the company will invest approximately $264 million to bolster its crawler excavator footprints at three main production sites in Korea, Sweden and North America. The largest share of the investment is slated for Korea's Changwon factory. Although the allocation of funds between the sites was not disclosed, the company said the investments would be carried out over the coming years. Volvo CE said the investment plan includes upgrading the Changwon site to secure global volumes and capabilities in Asia while leveraging supply chain capabilities to enhance efficiency, reduce costs and improve responsiveness to market demands. Volvo CE also pointed out that the Changwon plant remains an important factory in the company's global industrial network as it holds key competencies for manufacturing, product development and purchasing. The Changwon plant, which exports over 80 percent of the total production, has the biggest excavator manufacturing capacity within the Volvo Group worldwide. For the rest of the investments, Volvo CE said the final decision regarding the location, scope and timing for the Swedish expansion will be made later this year. The company will set up an excavator assembly line at its existing factory in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, for the North American market. By adding production capacity near key regions, the heavy machinery maker expects to improve operational efficiency and resilience while ensuring shorter delivery times and offering customized solutions for regional needs. The global expansion is also aimed at lowering carbon emissions by minimizing transportation distances, the company said. "We understand the need to respond to growing demand and are excited to expand our facilities to serve customers better," said Melker Jernberg, head of Volvo CE. "This investment underscores our commitment to quality, innovation and competence, allowing us to deliver even greater value. This expansion demonstrates our efforts to respond to customer demand by investing in our crawler excavator business closer to key markets and customers."
