LeBron James formally opts in for a 23rd season, will make $52.6M in 2025-26, AP source says
LeBron James is exercising his $52.6 million option with the Los Angeles Lakers for 2025–26, further confirming that he will become the first player in NBA history to play a 23rd season, a person with knowledge of the decision said Sunday.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither James nor the team announced the decision publicly. ESPN and The Athletic were among those to first report the decision. James, who recently returned to on-court workouts after taking several weeks to recover after spraining a knee ligament in the Lakers' final game of this past season's playoffs, told the AP earlier this month that he expected to be ready for training camp. That was an obvious sign he planned on returning for a 23rd year – one in which he'll break a tie with Vince Carter for longest NBA career by a player.
'I have a lot of time to take care of my injury, my knee, the rest of my body and make sure I'm as close to 100 percent as possible when training camp begins in late September,' James said in that interview. If any doubt existed even after that about James, the NBA's oldest current player, coming back for at least one more season, it's gone now. He had until Sunday afternoon to make his decision on the option, one that pushes his career on-court earnings to about $580 million.
This coming season will be his first full year with Luka Dončić as a teammate. Dončić was traded to the Lakers from Dallas in February, but the team – which entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed in a loaded Western Conference – still fell in Round 1 to Minnesota.
James turns 41 in December. He's been an All-NBA pick in 21 of his 22 seasons in the league, including a second-round nod this past season. No other player has more than 15 All-NBA selections. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists this past season. The NBA's all-time scoring leader has appeared in 1,562 regular-season games, 49 behind Robert Parish's mark of 1,611 – the most in league history. If healthy, James would obviously figure to break that mark this coming season.

US Gets Past Costa Rica in Gold Cup Quarterfinals on Penalty Kicks
Damion Downs scored in the sixth round of a shootout after three saves by Matt Freese, sending the US to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 3–2 penalty-kicks win over Costa Rica after a 2–2 tie on Sunday night. The US advanced to a Wednesday matchup in St. Louis against Guatemala, which upset Canada on penalty kicks in the opener of the quarterfinal doubleheader. Mexico plays Honduras in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. The championship is in Houston on July 6. The US has reached the semifinals in 17 of 18 Gold Cups, including 13 straight since a quarterfinal loss to Colombia on penalty kicks in 2000. Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored in regulation for the US, which faced its highest-ranked opponent of the tournament in Costa Rica (54th) after breezing through the group stage with an 8–1 goal differential. Alonso Martinez scored the tying goal for the Ticos in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot after Carlos Mora split Luca de la Torre and Arfsten to take a shot on Freese and seize the rebound to set up Martinez. CONCACAF changed the rules for this edition of the biennial championship for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, eliminating extra time except for the championship game. John Tolkin had the first chance to win the shootout for the US. Keylor Navas knocked down his try in the fifth round. Freese then denied Andy Rojas with a diving hand, climbing to his feet while nodding his head and sticking out his tongue toward his cheering teammates at midfield. That set up the winner by the 20-year-old Downs. Missing the tournament for the US are regulars Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun, and Sergiño Dest due to a variety of reasons from injuries to rest to Club World Cup commitments. The Ticos played without four key players. Forward Manfred Ugalde, who had three goals in the tournament, and midfielder Carlos Mora were suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Defender Ariel Lassiter (broken left hand) and forward Warren Madrigal (broken left leg) were sidelined by injuries. Three of Costa Rica's six goals during the group stage came by penalty kick, and Francisco Calvo added another one in the 12th minute after a foul by Arfsten. Calvo went low to zip the ball just out of reach of a diving Freese. Malik Tillman, who had three group stage goals, put a 37th-minute penalty kick off a post, and Navas knocked away Arfsten's attempt off the rebound. Luna picked him up with his first goal in international competition by rocketing a shot off the chest of defender Alexis Gamboa for the equalizer in the 43rd minute. Tillman made amends for his miss early in the second half by poking a pass ahead for Arfsten, who surged in from the left wing to send the ball into the opposite corner for the lead.

A'ja Wilson Puts Aces Ahead Late and Has 26 Points, 18 Rebounds in 84-81 Win Over Mercury
Aja Wilson made the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left and finished with 26 points, 18 rebounds, and seven assists as the Las Vegas Aces beat Phoenix 84–81 on Sunday, ending the Mercury's six-game winning streak. Wilson made a difficult layup on a feed from Chelsea Gray to make it 83–81 after Jackie Young snared an offensive rebound for the Aces. Aaliyah Nye made a free throw with 7.1 seconds left before the Mercury failed to get a good look on a third straight possession in the final minute. Nye, a rookie, had career bests of five 3-pointers and 16 points for the Aces (8–8). Young added 15 points and Jewell Loyd had 10. Wilson tied Lisa Leslie for the most 25-point, 15-rebound games in WNBA history at 13. Alyssa Thomas led Phoenix (12–5) with 16 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. Kahleah Copper added 15 points, Sami Whitcomb had 14, and Satou Sabally 10. Whitcomb had four 3-pointers, giving her at least four in five straight games, tying a WNBA record. There were 10 ties and 17 lead changes in the game, which was tied at 40 at halftime. Wilson had 10 points in the third quarter, which concluded with the Aces leading 59–50. Phoenix scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and surged to a 67–62 lead. Vegas went back ahead on Loyd's 3-pointer with 3:14 to play, and the lead changed hands five times after that.

New faces lead US women to familiar result: 4-0 win over Ireland
CINCINNATI: The US women's national team's depth was on display Sunday in Cincinnati when the squad's backups dominated Ireland for a 4-0 victory in a friendly. US coach Emma Hayes made 11 changes from the lineup that defeated Ireland 4-0 on Thursday and didn't miss a beat as the Americans won their fourth straight match without allowing a goal. In fact, Ireland did not put a shot on frame. Izzy Rodriguez, who made her USWNT debut along with Sam Meza, scored in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 lead while Emma Sears played a part in the first three goals. Sears and Rodriguez played together at Ohio State, less than two hours away. Sandwiching the Rodriguez goal, Lynn Biyendolo opened the scoring in the 11th minute and Yazmeen Ryan extended the lead to 3-0 in the 66th with her first goal. Alyssa Thompson made it 4-0 in the 86th on an assist by Claire Hutton. The win was the 600th in USWNT history in just 765 matches. It was such a young lineup that Biyendolo had almost twice as many appearances (81) as the rest of the starting lineup (41), which represented the fewest combined matches of any USWNT lineup in the past 24 years. It didn't matter. Sears made a cross to Biyendolo in the middle of the box and she ripped a shot for her 25th goal. Rodriguez got on the board when Sears took an entry pass from Olivia Moultrie and forced a save by Courtney Brosnan (six saves). The ball came to Rodriguez and she did not hesitate on the rebound. The role was reversed on the third goal. Sears fed Moultrie and she found an unmarked Ryan. A minute after Thompson's goal, hometown favorite Rose Lavelle entered the match to a standing ovation and nearly scored in the ensuing minute. The US will get a much sterner test on Wednesday when they play Canada in Washington, D.C., to complete the three-match window.
