Georgia Shreve is a distinguished composer, writer, playwright, and poet whose multifaceted talents have earned acclaim across the arts. With degrees from Stanford, Brown, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania, she seamlessly blends literature, music, and theater.
Her works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and London's Royal Over-Seas League, while her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, and The New Criterion. Jane Eaglen has earned worldwide recognition as one of the most formidable dramatic sopranos of her generation. Her extensive repertoire includes commanding performances with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, Chicago Symphony under Daniel Barenboim, and Boston Symphony Orchestra under Bernard Haitink. Beyond her Grammy Award-winning recording of 'Tannhäuser', her discography includes acclaimed solo albums for Sony Classical featuring works by Wagner, Bellini, Strauss, and Mozart and Bellini's Norma with Ricardo Muti. MICHAEL SLATTERY, TENOR
Known for his interpretive originality and luminous voice, Michael Slattery has performed leading roles at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Staatsoper Berlin, Opéra de Lyon, and Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. His collaborations include performances with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. Works by local artist Fred Hays featured at Carnegie Hall
LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — Carnegie Hall's May and June Exhibits continue, showcasing works from artists in the region. According to a press release, the Old Stone Room Gallery will feature pieces from Fred Hays. Hays is an award-winning artist and native West Virginian, a fact that shines through in his artistry. His paintings capture the history and culture of Appalachia and reflect life and nature in the area. He is regarded for his use of light and color in order to capture differing perspectives within his work. Lewisburg to host its first Juneteenth Celebration Hays attained a B.A. in Art from West Virginia State College, and later achieved a master's degree in Painting from Marshall University while serving as a graduate assistant for acclaimed artist June Kilgore. His professional career began quickly after graduation, where his work gained widespread recognition. Exhibits throughout the state have showcased his artistry, and his pieces gained national recognition through gallery sales, the release stated. Hays' work has also won multiple awards in juried exhibitions at the West Virginia Culture Center. Hays is also known for his work in sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, aquaculture, and conversation, the release noted. One of his most recent paintings captures the essence of life and nature, too, along with how his work has evolved. Paul Marantz, Lighting Designer of 9/11 Memorial and Studio 54, Dies at 87
Paul Marantz, a prominent architectural lighting designer who illuminated disco floors and skylines, libraries and chic hotels, train stations and concert halls, museums and embassies, died on May 26 at his home in Manhattan. He was 87. The cause of death was complications of a stroke, his wife, Jane Marantz, said. Mr. Marantz, who was known as the Prince of Darkness by industry wags, cast a wide net. His projects, sometimes done in concert with his business partners, Charles Stone and the Tony Award-winning lightning designer Jules Fisher, included new buildings — the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery in London (1991), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (1995), the Getty Center in Los Angeles (1997), the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar (2008), the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia (2012) — as well as many venerable old structures. Mr. Marantz was involved, for example, in the renovations of Carnegie Hall (1987), Grand Central Terminal (1998), the Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library (1998) and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center (2022). He also did the lighting for New York nightclubs like Studio 54 (1977) and the Palladium (1985), and for the Times Square Ball at the center of the New Year's Eve countdown in Manhattan (1999). The Pint-Size Singers Hoping to Be Opera Stars
The Metropolitan Opera's stage door, a plain entrance hidden in the tunnels of Lincoln Center, routinely welcomes star singers, orchestra musicians, stagehands, costumers and ushers. But a different bunch of visitors arrived there on a recent afternoon, carrying stuffed toy rabbits and 'Frozen' backpacks. They were children, ages 7 to 10, dressed in patent leather shoes, frilly socks and jackets decorated with dinosaurs. They were united in a common mission: to win a spot in the Met children's chorus, a rigorous, elite training ground for young singers. 'This might be the biggest day of my life,' said Naomi Lu, 9, who admires pop singers like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. She was knitting a lilac friendship necklace to stay calm as she waited in the lobby. 'I feel nervous and excited at the same time,' she said. 'You could say I'm nerv-cited.' Singing in the shower or in a school choir is one thing. But these students, who came from across New York City and its suburbs, were vying for the chance to perform at the Met, one of the world's grandest stages, a temple of opera that presents nearly 200 performances each year. Chorus members have a chance at roles like the angelic boys in Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'; the Parisian kids in Puccini's 'La Bohème'; or the street urchins in Bizet's 'Carmen,' to name a few.
