Shiseido taps AI, online channels and slow ageing trend to stay relevant

SINGAPORE - The beauty industry has changed significantly over the last decade, and beauty companies have had to adjust accordingly to stay relevant. Among them is Japanese beauty brand Shiseido, which is tapping technology to better meet evolving consumer demands.
One key move has been the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its customer experience. Shiseido offers a visualiser device that captures detailed facial images to assess skin condition as well as blood circulation beneath the skin's surface.
'The visualiser takes a photo of your face and is able to capture not just the condition of your skin but also the circulation in your skin,' said Ms Nicole Tan, president and chief executive officer of Shiseido Asia Pacific.
Combined with a short customer questionnaire, this technology enables a personalised skincare experience for customers, as opposed to generic product recommendations.
Shiseido has also expanded beyond operating solely in physical stores to also having a strong online presence, with its products now available on e-commerce platforms like Shopee and Lazada.
'Online platforms have become a viable and indispensable avenue to shop and are complementary to the brick and mortar business model,' said Ms Tan.
She added that brick-and-mortar outlets remain a key part of the brand's strategy and appeal.
'Although consumers like to cart out their items online, they still like having a physical store where they can try out the items, which is why we incorporated both brick-and-mortar shops and online platforms into our business model,' said Ms Tan.
'It cannot be one or the other; selling both online and physically have to go hand-in-hand.'
Shiseido's growth strategy includes listening to and being aware of changing consumer needs with market trends, said Ms Tan.
One of the biggest trends observed in recent years is the rise in demand for slow-ageing beauty products, or products that slow the process of ageing.
Slow-aging is a movement focuses on prevention and long-term skin health rather than simply treating visible signs of ageing.
In line with this trend, Shiseido launched its new Ultimune serum in March, targeting skin resilience and the root causes of ageing.
The new addition to Shiseido's Ultimune series will add to its current product portfolio, which includes brands from Japan, the United States and Europe, including Shiseido, Anessa and Issey Miyake.
Another part of Shiseido's growth strategy is also catering to customers who are now more aware and concerned about the ingredients in their skincare and beauty products, said Ms Tan.
'During and after the Covid-19 pandemic, we know that many consumers are having an increasing level of awareness and concern about ingredients that go into their products,' she said.
For customers who want more ingredient transparency and control over the type of skincare they use, Shiseido's portfolio now also includes US brand Drunk Elephant, which offers its users skincare 'cocktails', which are combinations of serums and moisturisers tailored to individual needs.

Shiseido is also focusing on expanding into new markets. In 2023, for example, it launched US cosmetics brand Nars in India.
'This is part of our growth strategy – increasingly looking at our portfolio of brands and bringing to our markets the brands that are relevant and resonate with the market,' said Ms Tan.
While the market has been very challenging, the good thing is that Shiseido has been consistently gaining market share, said Ms Tan.
'We'd like to continue in that aspect to do well and do well in each of our markets by being intentionally relevant. I think what's important is continuing to build the talent that we have,' she said.
Shiseido is also diverse in terms of female leadership – with 67 per cent of women in director-level positions and above, said Ms Tan, who is the first female CEO for Shiseido.
'It'll be a key priority that we continue to focus on, ensuring that we have a positive work environment that's inclusive and a home for talent, so that talent chooses to come (to our company),' she added.

Masayoshi Son pitches US$1 trillion US AI hub to TSMC, Trump team
[TOKYO] SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son is seeking to team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to realise what could be his biggest bet yet – a trillion-dollar industrial complex in Arizona to build robots and artificial intelligence. Son envisions a version of the vast manufacturing hub of China's Shenzhen that would bring back high-tech manufacturing to the US, according to people familiar with the billionaire's thinking. The park may comprise production lines for AI-powered industrial robots, they said, asking not to be named as the plan remains private. SoftBank officials are keen to have the Taiwanese maker of Nvidia's advanced AI chips play a prominent role in the project, although it's not clear what part Son sees for TSMC, which already plans to invest US$165 billion in the US and has started mass production at its first Arizona factory. Nor is it clear that TSMC would be interested. A person familiar with the chipmaker's thinking said that SoftBank's project has no bearing on TSMC's plans in Phoenix. Codenamed 'Project Crystal Land,' the Arizona complex represents the 67-year-old SoftBank chief's most ambitious attempt in a career that's spanned numerous bet-the-house bids, thousands-fold-returns and billions of dollars in losses. Son, who's often expressed disappointment in his own legacy, has repeatedly said he means to do everything he can to hurry AI development. SoftBank officials have spoken with federal and state government officials to discuss possible tax breaks for companies building factories or otherwise investing in the industrial park, including talks with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, the people said. The Japanese billionaire is also personally sounding out interest among an array of tech companies, they said. SoftBank's attempts to get businesses investing in a US industrial park follow signs that its campaign alongside ChatGPT maker OpenAI to raise hundreds of billions of dollars for US data centres is moving slower than initially expected. Crystal Land would need to address crucial details, such as whether there's demand and funding on par with its grandiose scale, to become reality. Son has pulled together a list of SoftBank Vision Fund portfolio companies that might take part in the Arizona manufacturing hub, the people said. SoftBank-backed startups working on robotics and automation technologies – such as Agile Robots – may set up production facilities at the industrial complex, they said. The plans are preliminary and feasibility hinges on support from the Trump administration and state officials. While the cost of the project as envisioned by Son may require as much as US$1 trillion to execute – a sum previously reported by the Nikkei – the actual scale depends on interest from big technology companies. If successful, Son has floated building multiple cutting-edge industrial parks across the US. SoftBank is exploring the Arizona project as it also moves forward on plans to invest as much as US$30 billion into OpenAI and plans a US$6.5 billion acquisition of Ampere Computing. It's also seeding money into the Stargate venture with OpenAI, Oracle and Abu Dhabi's MGX, although it aims to get the bulk of the money for building data centres around the world from outside investors. SoftBank's exploring project financing for Stargate data centres, a model that could be adapted to a big endeavour like Crystal Land. Son's restless search for growth has resulted in projects that proceed in fits and starts, making it difficult to gauge how committed he is to any one venture. If Son's primary motivation is to clear the way for AI, it may be more cost-efficient to encourage partnerships that link manufacturing expertise with that of AI engineers and specialists in fields from medicine to robotics, and incubating smaller companies, according to Melissa Otto, head of research at Visible Alpha. Italy's immigration and emigration both soaring, stats agency says
ROME - The numbers of Italians leaving their country and of foreigners moving in have soared to the highest in a decade, official data showed on Friday, fuelling national concerns about brain drain, economic decline and immigration. Italy has a right-wing government elected in 2022 on a mandate to curb migrant arrivals, but also has a shrinking population and growing labour shortages, highlighting the need to attract foreign workers. Meanwhile the country's stagnant economy and low wages - salaries are below 1990 levels in inflation-adjusted terms - have been blamed for pushing many Italians to seek better fortunes abroad. Last year 382,071 foreigners moved to Italy, up from 378,372 in 2023 and the highest since 2014, statistics agency Istat said. In the same period, 155,732 Italians emigrated, up from 114,057 in 2023 and also the highest since 2014. The immigration figure beat the previous high for the last decade of 301,000 in 2017, and was well above that period's low of 191,766 from 2020 - the height of the COVID pandemic. The figure of almost 270,000 nationals emigrating in the two-year period from 2023 to 2024 was up around 40% compared to the previous two years. The two-year immigration figure for that period, of around 760,000, was up 31% from 2021-2022. The figures are derived from town registry offices, so are unlikely to reflect undocumented migration. Ukrainians made up the biggest national group among those who arrived in 2023-2024, Istat said, followed by Albanians, Bangladeshis, Moroccans, Romanians, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Argentines and Tunisians. As for the high number of emigrants, "it is more than plausible" that a significant number were "former immigrants" who moved abroad after acquiring Italian citizenship, Istat said. The agency also said Italy's poorer south was continuing to depopulate, noting that almost 1% of residents in Calabria, the region with the lowest per capita income, moved to central or northern areas during 2023-2024. Thai stocks may fall to Covid lows amid political crisis: analyst
[SINGAPORE] Thailand's stock market cannot catch a break – the fallout from a major political crisis may further rock the worst-performing market in the world this year. Amid the existing headwinds from tariff uncertainty and the faltering tourism revenue, the Stock Exchange of Thailand's (SET) benchmark index has already wilted 23.8 per cent since the start of the year as at Friday (Jun 20), placing it last among all global equity indices, according to Bloomberg data. The market sell-off intensified in recent days as political jitters flared, following a leaked phone call between officials in Bangkok and Phnom Penh which heightened tensions along the Cambodian border. With economic headwinds already pressuring sentiment, analysts warn the bloodbath on the bourse may not yet be over. 'If foreign fund outflows accelerate and the prime minister faces calls to resign or a no-confidence vote, the SET Index could test 2020 Covid lows,' said Manish Bhargava, chief executive at Straits Investment Management. The index had fallen to a low of 969.1 points in March 2020, a level not seen since late-2011. Thailand's stock exchange was the worst-performing bourse in Asean on Thursday, with the SET Index plunging 2.4 per cent to 1068.7 – its sharpest drop this year – after the call was leaked on Wednesday. While other regional markets also posted losses, they did not match the scale of the Thai sell-off, underscoring growing investor unease as the kingdom faces domestic instability and macro headwinds. The losses came as a leaked phone call between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen on Wednesday incited the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) to announce its exit from the ruling coalition government. As calls for her resignation escalate and other coalition partners threaten to withdraw, uncertainty has arisen over the possibility of a Cabinet reshuffle, or a snap election that may lead to a political stalemate. This could mean a three to six-month wait for a new government to take office, said CGS International (CGSI) analyst Kasem Prunratanamala in a note on Wednesday night. 'We believe that it would be difficult for the SET to perform during this period.' Bhargava noted: 'Key sectors that are sensitive to political stability – banks, infrastructure and utilities – will likely lead declines.' Others, however, remained optimistic. OCBC Asean economists Lavanya Venkateswaran and Jonathan Ng maintained a baseline scenario of the political situation staying contained in a note on Jun 18, citing Paetongtarn's reconciliatory tone. The SET Index closed lower on Friday at 1067.6 points, falling 0.1 per cent. Tourist slump A slump in tourist arrivals to Thailand has reverberated through its economy, with the sector accounting for around 12 per cent of gross domestic product and employing more than 20 per cent of workers in 2024, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT). Foreign tourist arrivals to the country dipped 11 per cent in May from the previous month, continuing what has been a slow start to the year for the industry. The 14.3 million tourist arrivals during the first five months of 2025 were down 2.7 per cent from the previous corresponding period last year, and brought in 1.9 per cent less revenue at about 668.4 billion baht (S$26.2 billion), according to a Bank of America note. The bourse's tourism sector, comprising stocks including spa operator Siam Wellness Group and hotel operators Central Plaza Hotel and Erawan Group, has fallen about 23.4 per cent since the start of the year. But hopes of a sector-wide revival have also led some analysts to look with more optimism at stocks that have been battered hard by the slump. 'The tourism sector has already priced in the bad news,' UOB said in a Jun 5 note, naming stocks such as Erawan Group and mall operator Central Pattana as rebound plays. 'We expect tourist arrivals to recover in the third quarter of 2025,' said UOB analysts Kitpon Praipaisarnkit and Krit Tanarattananon. Yet while the tourism sector's dips may have bottomed out, CGSI analyst Thanapol Jiratanakij does not foresee a 'swift recovery' in arrivals – largely owing to the declining popularity of the nation among Chinese tourists. Increasing safety concerns from incidents such as the abduction of a Chinese actor in January and an earthquake in March have put off some Chinese nationals, who have turned towards domestic tourism and other regional alternatives for leisure travel. Existing headwinds to tourist arrivals have also hit the country's retail sector, highlighted by unlisted retailer King Power's request to terminate its duty-free concession contracts with Airports of Thailand. Maybank had earlier downgraded the broader retail sector to neutral, with companies such as department store operator Central Retail receiving 'hold' ratings. The bank cited sector-wide headwinds in muted consumption, falling tourist arrivals and a subdued economic outlook. 'Restoring confidence among Chinese tourists will require real improvements in safety and perception,' CGSI's Thanapol said. 'In this regard, we believe the government still has considerable work to do.' But as Paetongtarn's leadership remains uncertain, such efforts to boost the domestic economy may no longer be on the cards. 'The timing could not be more inconvenient considering (the) external headwinds,' said OCBC's Venkateswaran and Ng. As observers await the BOT's policy decision on Jun 25, ANZ Asia economist Krystal Tan expects the central bank to hold its benchmark rate at 1.75 per cent until the fourth quarter – but a worsening political gridlock may force the BOT into a rate cut. This may provide a catalyst to Thai stocks amid the wavering political situation, said CGSI's Kasem. He maintained the index's target at 1,200 points, citing its relative undervaluation to its peers.
