Newcastle United's ‘No Risk' Approach Amid Alexander Isak Injury Scare

Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe says he substituted star striker Alexander Isak in the 2-1 win over Brentford on Wednesday because he was 'not 100%', as the club takes a cautious approach to his fitness.
Isak, 25, made history by becoming the first player to score 20 goals in back-to-back Premier League seasons, before a Sandro Tonali wonder strike sealed three crucial points and move the Magpies up to fifth in the standings.
But Howe took him off on 66 minutes, just after Bryan Mbeumo equalised for the Bees with a penalty, and explained why after the match.
'On another day, he'd have scored more,' Howe said. "I don't think he was 100%, which is why we withdrew him. We hope it is nothing serious.
'He wasn't 100% with his groin. He was a bit unsure with his movements.'
Isak had missed a number of other chances in the game, and sharpness is a huge part of what makes him so effective. Groin issues have plagued him in the past, particularly last season when he struggled to reach his peak levels.
Rather than pushing him to his limits, Howe is determined to prevent long-term damage by being more cautious with Newcastle in contention for a return to the Champions League with nine league matches remaining.
A hefty injury list last season saw the appointment of Performance Director James Bunce, and he has overseen a vast improvement in player availability.
But if the club is to manage Isak's minutes, it will need to bolster attacking options, and Lille forward Jonathan David is a target this summer.

Howe praised Newcastle's ability to beat Brentford without a dominant performance in its first match since winning the Carabao Cup last month, something he says will be important between now and the end of the season.
"There have been similar games like Fulham and Bournemouth where we have lost at home and kicked ourselves afterwards. Today could easily have fallen into that category if we let it.
'Very similar to the West Ham game before the cup final, we ground out the result and you have to do in the Premier League to be successful and get where we want to get to.'
Newcastle next plays against Leicester City on Monday at 20:00 GMT (15:00 EST).

Inter Milan Croatia International Explains Nerazzurri Transfer: 'Inter A Top Club In Europe'
Petar Sucic officially became a new Inter Milan player today after completing his long-awaited transfer from Dinamo Zagreb. Speaking to Inter TV via FCInterNews, he revealed why he decided to join the Nerazzurri despite being courted by other top clubs. Advertisement Inter and Dinamo agreed Sucic's transfer toward the end of January. However, the Serie A runners-up left the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the season. Indeed, Petar Sucic had struggled with a long-term knee injury when the clubs struck an agreement. Therefore, Inter thought staying in his homeland for six more months would be in his best interest. But the waiting is over. Sucic signed the papers today, meaning he will be available for Inter's upcoming trip to North America. The Nerazzurri will fight for FIFA Club World Cup glory, and the Croatian midfielder will likely be part of the squad. Petar Sucic Reveals Why He Joined Inter Milan 'To me, Inter is one of the biggest clubs in Europe,' he stated. 'When the opportunity arose to come here, I had absolutely no doubts. Advertisement 'I really wanted to join, it's a huge opportunity. I know how prestigious this club is and what it represents, and I'm very happy to be here.' Meanwhile, Sucic worked under former Inter defender Fabio Cannavaro toward the end of his Dinamo Zagreb career. 'He spoke very highly of it – about the league, the club, about Italy, and about Milan. We had a great chat.' Then, he discussed his potential role at Inter. 'I don't really like to talk about myself,' he added. 'I'm a player who enjoys playing for the team. 'And I want to help my teammates as much as possible and give everything I've got. 'I'm very happy to be here and can't wait to get started.' Advertisement Furthermore, Sucic believes this move will help him grow as a player. 'I think I'll be able to learn a lot. This club has very experienced players – top-level ones – who have played in the Champions League for years, and who've featured in World Cups, European Championships, Copa América… 'All of that proves how much experience they have, and I believe they can really help me. 'Personally, I think I can improve tactically, defensively, and offensively. 'Nobody is ever perfect, and I believe you have to try to grow every day – that's what I'll work hard to do. 'I don't really know how to introduce myself. As I said earlier, I'll try to do my best and help the team. Advertisement 'I'll give everything I have on the pitch, I'll give everything for this club. That's definitely what fans can expect from me.' Finally, he admitted he spoke with ex-Inter stars Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic. 'Definitely. I spoke with them before coming here. 'They confirmed how big this club is, how prestigious it is, and they told me a lot of positive things. 'It made the decision really easy for me. They all wished me the best of luck in this new adventure.'

Wirtz and Kerkez next? Why Liverpool are spending big
Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz are two of Liverpool's summer targets [Getty Images] It was an extremely quiet transfer window for Liverpool last summer, with Federico Chiesa the only immediate signing that was made. But despite the lack of additions, the Reds cruised to the Premier League title in Arne Slot's first season in charge. Advertisement This time, however, they are doing things differently. Liverpool have already brought in Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m, are closing in on his Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Florian Wirtz for a fee in the region of a club record £109m and are in talks to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez for between £45m and £50m. There's also likely to be further incomings and outgoings to come. Why are the champions opting to spend big? Liverpool won their 20th league title in 2024-25 [Getty Images] After seeing his side close out their title-winning campaign with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Anfield, Slot reflected on the club's lack of transfer business last summer. Advertisement Chiesa arrived late in the window and while the Reds did also agree a deal to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, he stayed with the Spanish side until this summer. "We did things differently," he said. "Apart from signing Federico Chiesa we didn't do a lot so that makes it maybe even more special." If the lack of transfer activity made for a "special" title win, why the change of tack? "It will be just as tough or even tougher next season because the clubs we've competed with this season have always in every window invested a lot of money and they will probably do so this summer as well," Slot added. Advertisement "We just want good players. Ideally you sign them as soon as you can but it is not always easy." The arrival of Wirtz would take Liverpool's spending to £138.5m already, with a mini-transfer window having opened earlier than usual because of the Club World Cup. "Liverpool have been outside of the top 10 spenders on player signings since 2019, but their model is a classic case of being smarter rather than bigger," says football finance expert Kieran Maguire. "They certainly have the capacity to spend £200m but whether that fits with their model is another matter." Advertisement This is also a first proper summer transfer window for sporting director Richard Hughes, who joined the Reds in March last year. At that time his immediate task was identifying and appointing Jurgen Klopp's successor but his full focus now, with more than a year to prepare, has been on player recruitment. What other positions will be strengthened? Milos Kerkez started all 38 of Bournemouth's Premier League games last season [Getty Images] Given how much the Reds have spent already, there is every chance they will spend the £200m Maguire mentions, with several positions still being targeted as areas to strengthen. Liverpool moved quickly to address the departure of full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold with the signing of Frimpong, who can play anywhere down the right-hand side. Advertisement Wirtz, meanwhile, is seen as a key acquisition for Slot, which is why Liverpool are prepared to pay a club-record transfer fee for him. Manchester City - Liverpool's likely main challengers for the title next season - had also been interested in the Germany international, having viewed him as a successor to Kevin de Bruyne. But Pep Guardiola's side were ultimately put off by the potential cost of the deal, leaving Liverpool to press on. Left-back is also an area Slot wants to strengthen with Milos Kerkez - who plays for Hughes' former club Bournemouth - a key target. No agreement has yet been reached between Liverpool and Bournemouth, but the Reds have stepped up their efforts to sign him over the last couple of days. Advertisement Hughes was Bournemouth's sporting director when Kerkez moved to the South Coast from AZ Alkmaar in 2023. The Hungary defender dropped a small hint over his future on Instagram recently, posting: "I don't know what will happen in the next week but Cherries family thank you!" Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport: "Kerkez from Bournemouth is a really good option. He's quick, he's got good feet, likes defending one-on-one. He is very tenacious, great energy, and is only 21. "It fits the criteria of Liverpool's recruitment team measured by ability to progress and become more of an asset. I think that's quite likely to happen." Advertisement The left-back ranks second for most distanced covered of all Premier League full-backs this season (behind only Fulham's Antonee Robinson) and third for most sprints. He has made the third-most open play crosses in the Premier League and has eight goal involvements this campaign (two goals and six assists). His arrival would raise questions about the future of Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas, with the Reds unlikely to need all three left-backs next season. Tsimikas would be the expected departure but, with Champions League interest in Robertson, his exit instead is a possibility. Liverpool were also one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen before his move to Real Madrid was confirmed, so a centre-back may also be on the radar, particularly as Ibrahima Konate is into the final year of his contract with no news on a new agreement. Advertisement A new striker could also be pursued, although that will likely be dependent on outgoings in that position. On that matter... Who could depart in summer of change? Darwin Nunez (5) and Luis Diaz (13) scored 18 Premier League goals between them last season [Getty Images] Slot could be tempted to refresh his attack and both Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have been linked with moves away. Diaz joined the Reds in 2022 but enjoyed his best goalscoring form under Slot with 17 in all competitions including 13 in the Premier League. However, potential summer moves to either Barcelona or Saudi Arabia have been touted, and speculation over his future has only increased after Diaz and his girlfriend both wrote lengthy posts on social media to Liverpool fans that could be interpreted as farewell messages. Advertisement Meanwhile, Nunez has struggled to start regularly under Slot, who has also made public criticisms of his attitude. He has had three full seasons at Liverpool since completing a move worth up to £85m from Benfica - and while his effort is praised by Liverpool fans, he has struggled to score consistently. "It's time for a freshen up in attack," added Murphy. "I think Darwin has had a lot of chances. If you just simplify it to what we've seen in terms of his contribution and minutes played, Slot obviously doesn't fancy him. "Slot has played a winger, Luis Diaz, ahead of him as a striker at times. That tells you everything you need to know. Advertisement "I would be amazed if Darwin stayed. I think the writing is on the wall for him." Another player whose future is unclear is Harvey Elliott. The midfielder made 18 Premier League appearances for the Reds last season but started just two games and recently suggested his future is uncertain by saying "you never know what's going to happen". Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has already departed the Reds to join Brentford, and a busy summer of incomings and outgoings is set to continue for a while longer yet.

Liverpool are about to Sign ‘Electric' £40m Premier League Star
Liverpool's Left-Back Hunt Intensifies as Milos Kerkez Deal Nears Completion Liverpool's summer business is already turning heads across the Premier League. With the £29 million arrival of Jeremie Frimpong confirmed from Bayer Leverkusen, the club's recruitment drive continues to gather pace. Attention has now turned firmly to AFC Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez, with a deal in the region of £40 million appearing increasingly imminent. Advertisement Craig, speaking on Anfield Index with Dave Davis, gave insight from a Bournemouth perspective. Representing UTCIAD – The AFC Bournemouth Fans Channel – his passionate, if reluctant, acceptance of Kerkez's potential departure adds weight to the belief that Liverpool may have unearthed another gem. Kerkez to Liverpool: A Deal of Champions Liverpool's status as newly-crowned Premier League champions under Arne Slot has only strengthened their hand in the transfer market. European football's elite is once again firmly within the club's grasp, with Champions League football on the horizon. That appeal is not lost on Craig, who admitted, 'Liverpool are Premier League champions and will be competing at the top table in Europe and will be one of the contenders to win the UEFA Champions League next season.' Advertisement Such pulling power makes resisting the Anfield call almost impossible, and even Craig couldn't deny the obvious logic behind the move. 'He would be very silly to not make that move, if I was a neutral.' Kerkez, just 20, already looks a complete modern full-back. His defensive positioning and game intelligence are advanced for his age, while his ability going forward fits the mould of Liverpool's traditional flank-play. Craig didn't hold back in his praise: 'Milos is fantastic going forward, great in defence, he reads the game so well. He is an all-round player.' Photo: IMAGO Bournemouth's Reluctant Farewell While Bournemouth fans are understandably clinging to hope, the reality is setting in. Kerkez is admired not just locally, but across Europe. 'Unfortunately I can see that it is going to be very, very difficult for us to keep hold of him this summer,' Craig admitted, voicing the collective sentiment on the South Coast. Advertisement The Cherries have already been linked with replacements, suggesting internal acknowledgement of the situation. 'There's been a lot of speculation over Bournemouth looking for a new left-back,' Craig added, acknowledging the likely exit. Still, hope springs eternal, and in true fan fashion, Craig added, 'I'm still hoping that there is some way we can keep hold of Kerkez.' It's unlikely. When a Champions League club with Liverpool's prestige calls, few young talents can say no. The promise of competing under Slot, playing at Anfield, and possibly replicating the rapid progress of players like Andy Robertson, is far too appealing. Photo: IMAGO YouTube Clips and Transfer Clues There was a more light-hearted twist too. Kerkez's personal YouTube channel, focused on gaming, briefly became a source of speculation. Craig remarked, 'Milos has got a YouTube channel and it's quite funny. It seems to be gaming, not my cup of tea, but I was having a little watch and he did say that he wasn't going to Liverpool on there at one point – take it with a pinch of salt.' Advertisement In today's digital age, where footballers drop hints in the most unexpected corners of the internet, even a gaming video can cause a stir. But it's fair to say fans should be looking at the pitch, not the pixels. Slot's Vision and Summer Statement Arne Slot's early transfer dealings suggest a manager with a clear tactical identity and strong backing from Liverpool's board. Jeremie Frimpong offers width, pace and end-product on the right, and if Kerkez arrives, Liverpool's full-back options will be among the most dynamic in world football. Slot's 4-2-3-1 or high-energy 4-3-3 systems thrive on wide defenders who can dictate the game in both halves. Kerkez's arrival would add depth, competition and another youthful presence to a backline that is already transitioning into a new era. This isn't just a signing for now – it's a long-term move that aligns with everything Liverpool have tried to build in the post-Klopp era. The league title might be back in the cabinet, but Slot isn't satisfied. And based on this early window intent, Liverpool fans shouldn't be either. There's more to come.
