The Better Sister – Season 1 Episode 4 'Gazpacho' Recap & Review
Episode 4
Episode 4 of The Better Sister begins with Chloe dreaming about Hank's funeral. Hank cracks jokes with Chloe and looks down upon Nicky. Sheila nails his casket shut. Young Ethan shows up with a gun.
Chloe wakes up to find Nicky baking. She wants Chloe to try but she waves Nicky off. Chloe tells her about the dream and laughs at how mom was always uptight and weird about dad who was an easygoing guy. This description surprises Nicky but they are interrupted by a new article – the sister wives connection among Nicky, Chloe, Adam and Ethan. Chloe panics and Nicky is hurt to learn that Chloe kept her presence a secret.
Catherine is upset by the secret as well. She is distant and states that the board needs a statement from Chloe EOD. Tired of the chaos, Chloe tries to cancel Adam's wake but Catherine's daughter, Janie convinces her not to. As Chloe leaves, she has Adam cremated since the autopsy is done.
Nicky heads to an AA meeting. In a flashback, we see a drunk Hank being rude and then jovial with a young Nicky. Before he heads to bed, he gives her whiskey and she drinks it.
She tells the AA group that alcohol was the only thing she shared with her father. He hated her otherwise and so she would force herself to drink even though she didn't like it. She is also upset that Chloe is so ashamed that she has shut out that part of their family and buried everything related to Nicky. Ken, a friendly guy, advises her to talk to Chloe as secrets can be poison.
He is right as Chloe next explains herself to Jake and paints Nicky as a selfish addict. She had hoped Ethan would fix Nicky but when he drowned, she took it upon herself to look after him. And while raising him, she and Adam fell in love. They 'buried' Nicky for a fresh start.
With the world watching her, she hints that nothing can happen between her and Jake. He seems understanding but excuses himself. She spots his phone and finds texts to Bill. That he didn't find anything at Adam's beach house.
Nicky visits Ethan next and he has been beaten up. He asks her not to tell Chloe. As they catch up, he reveals he is getting a therapist. She is surprised that he is intimidated, as he has never really gone for therapy. He is scared and makes her promise to visit him every week.
Back home, Chloe packs up Adam's things. She hallucinates him and he wonders if he ever did anything good in his life. She thinks they did. A pap catches her from a rooftop and she looks annoyed. Adam claims she will miss the attention once it stops.
She finally gets a call from Michelle who advises her to lie low as the court won't like any more scandals.
Chloe heads to the beach house and finds Nicky cooking gazpacho for them. She convinces Nicky to come to the wake and they have a sweet bonding moment. It is ruined when Nicky brings up therapy and how Adam thought it was for the weak. She insists it is good for families like theirs and Chloe lashes out. She believes their family was fine and everything bad was due to Nicky's bad decisions.
Hurt, Nicky finally reveals that Hank was horrible. One night, he got drunk, mistook her for Sheila and tried to sleep with her. Sheila gave him an ultimatum which is why he got sober. A shocked Chloe holds to the fact that it was an accident and that Hank wasn't a bad guy. They are interrupted by Matt who finds it suspicious that Chloe had Adam cremated. Nicky kicks him out and the sisters head to the wake.
Hosted by Catherine, it is extravagant and even includes a reporter. She judges Nicky who brings the gazpacho as a gift. The cherry on top is that the board has decided on a temporary leave of absence for Chloe. She tries to refuse but Catherine claims it is a good thing.
Meanwhile, Nicky panics in the bathroom. She comes out and sees everyone eyeing her and showering Chloe with condolences. She ends up flirting with a waiter and starts drinking. Janie tries to befriend her and she exaggerates about herself. Nearby, Bill and Jake discuss work and we learn Gentry has renewed their contract.
Catherine pushes Chloe into giving a speech who is worried about Nicky. Chloe tries to get her to leave but she refuses. Upset with everything, Chloe panics as well. She straightens up once she learns Ethan's trial is in 5 weeks. Wanting to be heard, she tells the reporter, Sid Evans that she buried Nicky for Ethan's sake.
After the wake, Nate, the waiter, approaches Nicky and they hook up while Catherine watches from afar.
Chloe goes home and gets drunk too. She is annoyed that Sid hasn't taken the bait and put out her story. She sits in Adam's car and suddenly remembers Hank driving recklessly. Young Chloe had been scared and Nicky had held her hand.
Chloe shakes herself and finds the card of Edward Olivero, FBI agent. She calls him and we see he is in the car hanging around Jake's beach house.
At the end of The Better Sister Episode 4, Nicky comes home and jumps into the pool. She hallucinates Hank and Adam and goes underwater to make them disappear.
The Episode Review
The Better Sister Episode 4 is yet another chapter that proves this show shines best when focusing on the sisters and their drama rather than the murder mystery. Despite being at the halfway mark, we have yet to learn much about Ethan or Adam which makes the prison experience or the hallucinations emotionless. In fact, Nicky hiding from Hank rather than Adam makes more sense, given what we learn about the dad and how Chloe only knows a rose-tinted version of him.
But this chapter has an easy pace, flitting from segment to segment while exploring the different dynamics between the characters. Catherine is quite shady and seems to be more on the board's side than Chloe's, even though she acts otherwise. Jake is another vague character but his blatant pining over Chloe piques interest. But in the end, this is an enticing character study of estranged sisters who are as similar as they are different from each other.

Mexican band Grupo Firme cancels US show, saying their visas were suspended by Trump administration
The popular Mexican regional music band Grupo Firme announced on Friday that it was canceling a performance in a music festival in California over the weekend after the United States government suspended the musicians' visas. It comes after the U.S. State Department has revoked visas of a number of Mexican musicians for playing a genre of music that it says glorifies cartel violence. The group, which has soared to international fame playing Mexican regional music, said in a statement posted on its Instagram account that the visas of them and their team are currently under 'administrative review by the U.S. Embassy" and that it would make it 'impossible' for them to perform in the La Onda Fest to be held in the city of Napa Valley, California on June 1. But the post didn't detail what it would mean in the long term for the musical group. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said that visa cases are confidential according to U.S. law and couldn't provide more information on the case. The suspension is just the latest in a series of moves the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has taken targeting Mexican artists in the genre, who in some cases have glorified the leaders of cartels as sort of Robin Hood figures. While the genre of 'narco-corridos' has stirred controversy, much of the music also speaks to the harsh realities facing Mexican youth caught in cartel violence. Two months ago, the Mexican musical group Los Alegres del Barranco was sanctioned after it projected images of the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel at a concert in the western state of Jalisco. 'I'm a firm believer in freedom of expression, but that doesn't mean that expression should be free of consequences,' U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said at the time. 'The last thing we need is a welcome mat for people who extol criminals and terrorists.' But Grupo Firme has taken steps in recent months to distance itself from the facet of the musical genre glorifying criminal groups, announcing in April shortly after the controversy that it would not sing such music in concerts.

Georgia grandfather sacrifices his life to save twin granddaughters from falling tree limb: ‘He was a hero'
A 77-year-old Georgia grandfather was killed by a falling tree limb as he saved the lives of his twin granddaughters while they were in their backyard. Manuel Pinzon died on Wednesday afternoon, according to WANF. Son-in-law Jason Krause told the outlet that Pinzon saved the eight-year-old twins by pushing them out of the way. 'He sacrificed his life to save my two twins from a tree,' he said. 'They got shoved out of the way. He got them out of the way, but took the full hit of a fallen limb on his head, and he didn't make it.' Twins Isabella and Gabi were out with Pinzon and his sister when the family heard a loud cracking sound. Just moments later, the grandfather was on the ground, injured. 'I told my sister to run to the front yard and to get some help,' Gabi told WANF. The grandfather is being remembered as a hero. 'He saved me,' Gabi said. Krause noted that the grandfather loved his family as well as the outdoors. The son-in-law described him as the greatest man he had ever known. 'For as sad as everybody is and for as much crying as everyone's done since, all I want to do is toast him,' Krause told WANF. 'And I want to celebrate him because he was a hero.' The incident took place at Pinzon's home in Dacula, Georgia, according to ABC News. The twins were exploring the forest behind the backyard when they found a baby deer. They ran back to tell Pinzon about the deer. The grandfather suggested that they eat lunch and return later to see if it needed help. Krause told ABC News that it was at about 12 p.m. on Wednesday when the twins and Pinzon's sister heard the loud cracking above them. "As soon as they heard that sound, they got pushed really hard from the side by him to the ground," the son-in-law told ABC News. He estimated that the tree limb that struck Pinzon weighed between 65 and 75 pounds, and that it fell from at least 60 feet. Krause added that Pinzon started bleeding from his head and nose. One of the twins called 911, and the other ran inside to get their grandmother. Following the instructions of the 911 operator, one of the granddaughters placed a rag on the back of Pinzon's head and worked to keep his head stable. However, he continued to bleed and cough up blood. Krause said his wife went to the hospital to be with her father, and the son-in-law went to the home to be with the children, saying they were "covered in blood and were in shock." Pinzon died just after arriving at the hospital. The son-in-law added that the twins will begin trauma counseling. Pinzon was "one of the biggest influences in their life, and having him gone like that was very traumatic,' he added. "At 4:30 [p.m.] on Wednesday, which is about 30 minutes after he passed, one of my daughters had texted him and said, 'You died for me,'" Krause told ABC News. "He marked everyone that came in contact with him. Everybody loved Manuel." He was a 'great person. I wish I could be half the person he was. He was amazing," Krause said. Pinzon, who was set to turn 78 early next month, leaves behind two daughters, five grandchildren, and his wife. They had been together for 50 years.

Mike Trout returns to go 1-for-5 as Angels top Guardians
May 31 - Jose Soriano pitched six strong innings, Jorge Soler homered and drove in two runs, and the visiting Los Angeles Angels beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 on Friday to snap a five-game losing streak. Three-time American League MVP Mike Trout went 1-for-5 in his return from the injured list for Los Angeles, singling in the fourth inning while serving as the designated hitter. He hadn't played since April 30 due to a bone bruise in his left knee, missing 26 games. Soriano (4-5) won for the second time in three starts, scattering four hits and four walks. The right-hander struck out two and only allowed one runner to get past second base. Closer Kenley Jansen failed to finish the shutout, giving up a two-out RBI single to Nolan Jones in the ninth inning. Angels reliever Robert Stephenson only threw three pitches before leaving in the seventh inning with biceps discomfort. Los Angeles' Jo Adell matched a season high with three hits. Cleveland's Jose Ramirez went 0-for-3, ending his career-best hitting streak at 21 games. The Guardians fell to 25-4 against the Angels at home since 2015. Adell singled home Soler in the second with the lone run off Guardians starter Luis L. Ortiz (2-6), who struck out five and allowed seven hits and two walks in six innings. Ortiz lowered his ERA in five home starts to 2.22 but remained winless in seven outings overall since April 18. The Angels increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh. A passed ball by Bo Naylor allowed Scott Kingery to sprint home before Soler's single brought in Nolan Schanuel. Soler tacked on a solo homer in the ninth off Andrew Walters, who subsequently exited with a injury to his right arm or side. Kingery started at second base, making his first major league appearance since June 8, 2022, with the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 1-for-3, posting his first hit since 2021. Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada was not in the lineup because of a sore right knee but was available off the bench. Earlier in the day, the Guardians placed center fielder Lane Thomas on the injured list with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. They were unable to fill his roster spot before the first pitch. --Field Level Media
