U.S.-backed aid group in Gaza reopens sites after closures and delays

NBC News4 days ago

A U.S. and Israeli-backed organization distributing aid in Gaza said Thursday it was reopening two distribution sites a day after shutting them following a series of deadly shootings close to its operations.
The U.S.-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said only two sites in southern Gaza's Rafah area would operate Thursday, after all sites were closed the day before for maintenance. GHF had opened three sites earlier in the week, and one of Thursday's sites was in a new location, it said.
The GHF, which has been fiercely criticized by humanitarian organizations including the United Nations for alleged lack of neutrality, began distributing aid last week. The U.N. has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million population is at risk of famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade of the enclave.
Meanwhile, Israel announced it had recovered the bodies of two dual nationality Israeli-American hostages from Gaza. Gadi Hagi and his wife Judy Weinstein-Hagi were killed and taken to Gaza after Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the war. Fifty-six hostages remain in captivity, with fewer than half believed to be alive.
The Israeli military has intensified operations in Gaza since breaking a fragile ceasefire with Hamas in March, taking more territory with the government pushing to wipe out the Islamist militant group.

Greta Thunberg boat branded 'a selfie yacht' as Israel hits back at activists

After Greta Thunberg said she and the 11 other activists on Madleen had been "intercepted and kidnapped," Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs took a swipe at the campaigners Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has branded a boat carrying Greta Thunberg and 11 other activists planning to reach Gaza as a "selfie yacht". Authorities intercepted the vessel in the Mediterranean Sea and took it - and the activists - to the port of Ashdod this morning. In a video posted on X, Swedish activist Greta said: "If you see this video, we are being intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel." ‌ But, hitting back, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel accused "Greta and others" of attempting "to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity". They added: "With recent reports of a 'celebrities yacht' heading to Gaza, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to clarify the following: ‌ "The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to unauthorised vessels under a legal naval blockade, consistent with international law. The yacht is claiming that it is delivering humanitarian aid. In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) - a 'selfie yacht'." The spokesperson continued: "Humanitarian aid is delivered regularly and effectively via different channels and routes, and is transferred through established distribution mechanisms. Over the past two weeks, more than 1,200 aid trucks have entered Gaza from Israel. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11 million meals directly to civilians in Gaza. "The Gaza maritime zone remains an active conflict area, and Hamas has previously exploited sea routes for terrorist attacks, including the October 7th massacre. Unauthorised attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts. We call on all actors to act responsibly and to channel humanitarian aid through legitimate, coordinated mechanisms, not through provocation." It is understood a uniformed officer told the people onboard the Madleen that there are other means of delivering aid, before the ship was intercepted. The uniformed officer said, in a moment allegedly caught on camera, "established channels and distribution centres" had been set up. "If you wish to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, you're able to do so through the port of Ashdod. We have established channels and distribution centres," they reportedly told the activists. Israel 's defence minister Israel Katz had warned on Sunday that Israel would not allow anyone to break its naval blockade of the Palestinian territory, which he said is aimed at preventing Hamas from importing arms. He added: "To the antisemitic Greta and her fellow Hamas propagandists – I will say this clearly: You should turn back, because you will not make it to Gaza."

Israeli forces board charity boat bound for Gaza with activist Greta Thunburg aboard

JERUSALEM— Israeli forces have boarded a charity vessel attempting to reach the Gaza Strip in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said early Monday. The British-flagged yacht Madleen, operated by the pro-Palestinian FFC, had departed from Sicily on June 6 and had hoped to reach Gaza later in the day, when the interception occurred, the group said on its Telegram account. Among those on board the boat are Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. Shortly before the FFC statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry posted a video on X showing the Israeli Navy communicating with the Madleen over a loudspeaker, urging it to change course. 'The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to naval traffic as part of a legal naval blockade,' a soldier said. 'If you wish to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, you are able to do so through the (Israeli) port of Ashdod.' The yacht, with its 12-person crew, was carrying a symbolic shipment of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz o rdered the military on Sunday to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas. Israel imposed a naval blockade on the coastal enclave after Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007. The blockade has remained in place through multiple conflicts, including the current war, which began after a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that killed more than 1,200 people, according to an Israeli tally. Gaza's health ministry says over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of Israel's military campaign.
