Police ground flight after staff wrongly accused passengers of stealing security guard's phone
Police boarded a Wizz Air flight and passengers were held on the tarmac for nearly 90 minutes Friday – after staff wrongly accused passengers of stealing a security guard's mobile phone.
Wizz Air flight W95004 was due to fly from London Luton to the Albanian capital Tirana at 15.10 yesterday.
However passengers were told the plane was going nowhere as CCTV footage apparently showed a passenger swiping a phone in the airport.
The plane was delayed from take-off by 88 minutes due to the saga, which ended after cabin crew said there was in fact 'no item' on the plane.

An announcement made by a member of cabin crew just before the plane was scheduled to take off said: 'We know the phone is on board, now we should leave in two minutes – we cannot because of this, this is a security issue.
'We cannot have an item that does not belong to anyone on this flight. We cannot depart knowing that there's something that does not belong to this flight.'
One 28-year-old passenger, who asked not to be named, said staff had called the missing phone and told passengers they could hear the plane's announcements when somebody picked up, leading them to believe a passenger on board had swiped it.
The passenger said: 'You'd think airports would be more secure and this would be resolved much more swiftly.
'You're not even safe at Luton airport, somewhere you think is a safe space.'
Nearly an hour after the first announcement, a different member of crew announced that staff were looking at CCTV footage to find the culprit.
He said: 'We still want to give the chance for this potential person who made the mistake to bring it before they will find it in the video.
Then, over an hour after the flight was due to take off, exasperated cabin crew members announced to apoplectic passengers that there was in fact 'no item' on the plane at all.

'Once again, please voluntarily come to the front or to my colleagues at the back.'
With the phone still missing, police then boarded the plane as angry passengers remained at Luton.
Then, over an hour after the flight was due to take off, exasperated cabin crew members announced to apoplectic passengers that there was in fact 'no item' on the plane at all.
They said: 'There's no item on this plane, we're happy now with our security position to go.
'I appreciate your understanding for this situation. It is for us as well quite a new one, we're doing our best and we will be on our way to Tirana very soon.'

Our hotel room was ransacked in Spain — here's why other tourists need to be warned
A mom-of-two whose hotel room was raided on vacation in Spain has issued a warning to other tourists to 'keep your wits about you.' Becca Farley, 27, was staying at Magical Tropical Splash in Benidorm with her partner, six-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter when she caught strangers in her room. The family, from Eastleigh, Hampshire in the UK had paid $3,410 for their week-long stay. 5 A mom-of-two whose hotel room was raided on vacation in Spain has issued a warning to other tourists to 'keep your wits about you.' Becca Farley / SWNS On the last night, with signs around the hotel warning of a power cut, Becca went to the room to charge their phones before the flight home. 'As I got in the elevator these two teenagers got in the elevator with me and just pressed my floor level,' she said. 'I honestly didn't think anything of it because there's five rooms per floor so I just assumed they were going to one of them.' 5 Becca Farley, 27, was staying at Magical Tropical Splash in Benidorm with her partner, six-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter. Becca Farley / SWNS The teens walked out in front of her and straight into her room, which had the door wedged open by a shoe. 'I thought oh sh*t I have obviously got off on the wrong floor, what a palaver I'm going to have to wait for the lift again. But it was the right floor. 'It happened all quite quickly and they just strolled straight into my room. 'I then followed in after them, which in hindsight, I shouldn't have because you hear horror stories and I think it could have gone badly. 'But I just didn't really think and went straight into the room and shouted 'what are you doing in my room?'' One of the intruders started shouting at her in Spanish, and Becca screamed: 'Get the f–k out, get the f–k out, get the f–k out,' until they ran off. They returned minutes later and banged on the door while she stayed locked inside. 5 The teens walked out in front of her and straight into her room, which had the door wedged open by a shoe. Becca Farley / SWNS 'I was absolutely petrified,' she said. 'I know it sounds silly and people have said you should have done this, you should have locked them in the room, you should have decked them but at that moment I think it was just that invasion of privacy. 'This is supposed to be your safe place when you are away, you're away from home, we don't travel all that often so we were really shaken. 'Then that night I did not sleep because I was flinching at every noise. 'If it had happened earlier on in the week we would have flown home.' Becca reported the incident to hotel security, when she discovered another family had experienced a similar break-in and had passports, watches and other valuables stolen. 5 On the last night, with signs around the hotel warning of a power cut, Becca went to the room to charge their phones before the flight home. Becca Farley / SWNS Now she's warning other tourists planning on visiting Spain: 'I would advise just to be alert. 'A lot of people have said we were fear mongering people not to go away, not at all. 'We will certainly go on vacation again, it's not a case of us never going abroad again but I think it's just having that awareness that if you are a lone woman, please be careful. 'I'm very lucky that I'm OK but I think it's just a case of having your wits about you a bit more. 'When you go on vacation you tend to relax and become a little bit naive to these situations.' 5 Now she's warning other tourists planning on visiting Spain. Becca Farley / SWNS She also recommends locking valuables in suitcases with padlocks. 'Obviously keep your valuables safe,' she said. 'I know some people say don't use the safes, we personally lock all of ours and padlock them in our suitcases. 'I think it's just a case of having your wits about you and knowing not to get comfortable in somewhere you've never been before.' Although she plans to continue traveling, Becca said she'll now take extra precautions. 'I'm considering getting a webcam that you can put in your room next time we go away. I will carry on locking my stuff away. I would never take the kids away on my own. 'I certainly wouldn't have cleaners in my room ever again, not to say it definitely was them but they have access to your room. 'I don't know if I would feel comfortable going up to a room on my own again.' Magical Tropical Splash Hotel has been contacted for comment.

Jailed paedophile given five more life sentences
A jailed child sex offender has been given an extra five life sentences after 13 more victims emerged following media coverage of his case. Former London bus driver Carson Grimes, 69, who lived in Luton, had admitted 24 further offences including rape and indecent assault. In 2021, Grimes was given two life sentences after being convicted of 36 serious sexual offences relating to nine victims after a trial. On Tuesday, Judge Allison Hunter imposed the additional life sentences during a hearing at Luton Crown Court. In 2021, a judge had said Grimes must spend a minimum of 22 years in jail before parole could be considered. Judge Hunter said on Tuesday that Grimes should now spend 22 years and nine months in prison before parole could be considered. She told Grimes: "I hope you never see the light of freedom again." The court heard how Grimes, of Dumfries Street, Luton, had admitted sex offences against 13 more victims - between 1987 and 2001. Detectives said media reporting, including an episode of the Channel 4 series 24 Hours in Police Custody, led to more people making allegations following the original trial. Victims of sex offences cannot be identified in media reports - unless they give permission. Judge Hunter said Grimes had systematically abused the "most vulnerable" children. She said the male victims featuring in the latest case had been boys aged between 11 and 16 when Grimes abused them. "You variously groomed and terrified them into submission," she said. "None of your victims had the remotest idea what they were getting into. "I am more than satisfied that you continue to pose the gravest of danger to children and young people of both sexes." The court heard how Grimes "created a frightening legend", showing his victims weapons and telling them he had been a commando. Alesdair King, for Grimes, said his client had health problems, adding it was likely he spend the rest of his life in jail. He said Grimes had admitted the latest offences. The original trial in 2021 heard how Grimes abused children in the 1980s when he lived in London, and his behaviour escalated when he moved to Bedfordshire and continued until about 2002. Jurors found him guilty of 19 counts of rape, 11 of indecent assault and six of indecency with a child. Grimes pleaded guilty to the 24 new charges at Luton Crown Court in April. Bedfordshire Police then described Grimes - also known as Carson Phillips - as one of "Bedfordshire's most prolific sex offenders" and one of his victims described his home as a "horror house". Det Insp Clare Gilbert described the paedophile as an "horrific predator". She had said he had said he had an "elevated sense of self-worth" and believed he could "prey on vulnerable children and get away with it".
