ICC ready to back WTC four-day Tests in boost for smaller nations
The International Cricket Council is ready to sanction four-day Tests in the World Test Championship to help smaller nations to play more games and longer series.
In the next WTC cycle, which begins with Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh in a two-Test series on Tuesday, only five-day Tests are permitted by the ICC which has led to an emphasis on truncated series.
Of the 27 Test series to be played among the nine countries contesting the 2025-27 WTC, 19 will feature just two matches, there will be five three-match series and England, Australia and India will all play one five-match Test series against each other.
During discussions last week at the WTC final at Lord's, the ICC chief executive, Jay Shah, is understood to have expressed his support for four-day Tests, with a view to sanctioning them in time for the 2027-29 WTC cycle. England, Australia and India would still be permitted to schedule five-Test series for the Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the first iteration of which begins with the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Friday.
The ICC first sanctioned four-day Tests for bilateral contests in 2017, with England playing Zimbabwe over four days at Trent Bridge last month after four-day Tests against Ireland in 2019 and 2023, although introducing them for the WTC would be a significant change and could lead to longer series.
Many smaller nations are reluctant to host Tests due to the time they take out of the schedule and the cost, but a move to four-day cricket would enable an entire three-Test series to be played in less than three weeks. In four-day Tests the playing hours are extended to mandate a minimum of 98 overs per day rather than 90 overs to mitigate the time lost.
South Africa's threadbare itinerary despite being crowned world champions in the thrilling final against Australia at Lord's last week has further highlighted the issue, and focused minds on the need for change.

Wrexham sign striker Hardie from Plymouth
Wrexham have signed Plymouth Argyle's Scottish striker Ryan Hardie for an undisclosed 28-year-old, who began his career with Rangers, scored 10 goals in the Championship last season as Argyle were relegated to League also scored the winner from the penalty spot against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round in February, one of 12 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions in 2024-25."I'm delighted to get the move done, I'm really happy to get it done so early and I cannot wait to get going," Hardie told Wrexham's official website."The last couple of seasons, it's been good getting experience in the EFL Championship and it's experience I can lean on now."He has signed a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season and is Wrexham's first signing of the summer as they prepare for a return to English football's second tier for the first time in 43 years. Dan Evans: I've come full circle winning first match at Andy Murray Arena
Dan Evans felt he had come full circle after winning the first men's match at the newly-christened Andy Murray Arena. Evans beat world number 13 Frances Tiafoe 7-5 6-2 to reach the second round of the HSBC Championships at Queen's Club. The 35-year-old was Murray's partner when the three-time grand slam winner and former world number one played his final match, for Great Britain in the men's doubles at the Olympics last year. 'I didn't really think anything of it when I was put first on,' said Evans. 'But then a few people mentioned it, that I had finished with him in his last match and then played the men's event, the first match. It was pretty cool to do that.' Evans, now ranked a lowly 199 and plodding around the lower-tier Challenger events, rolled back the years against big-serving American Tiafoe. He picked up his second career win over a top-20 opponent on grass, having knocked 16th-ranked Nikoloz Basilashvili out of Wimbledon six years ago. 'I still believed I've got that tennis in me and I still believe I can do good things inside the top 100. But believing it and it happening is a lot different,' he added. 'You know, that's why I wake up in the morning to go to practice, to go to training. 'You know how some days you think 'are you deluded, are you nuts, have you still got it, still got it in your legs'? I think today showed I still have a bit left.' Evans needed a wildcard to play at Queen's and will need another if he is to compete at Wimbledon. 'I don't think any younger players have been ripping up stumps to knock me out of the wildcard spot,' he said. 'So I think I've got a good shot again.
