Eco-Shop positive about performance despite price hike

KUALA LUMPUR: Household retailer Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd remains optimistic about its performance despite hiking up product prices to RM2.60 from RM2.40 last month.
Its chief financial officer Chong Yew Kai said the company raised prices to RM2.40 from RM2.20 in 2022 and saw no negative market reaction.
"I see no changes in company performance (after the price increase), it was as per our expectation. So, we are not seeing any different kind of market reaction.
"Of course, (we are in) a transition period (now). Moving forward, we are looking at a very strong performance," he told a press conference after today's listing.
Recently, Eco-Shop posted a higher net profit of RM61.72 million for the third quarter of its financial year ending Feb 28, 2025 (3Q FY2025), compared to RM42.57 million in the same period a year ago.
The revenue increased 17.2 per cent to RM736.35 million in 3Q FY2025 from RM628.41 million previously, driven by the expansion of the group's store network with the opening of 26 new outlets, bringing the total number of stores to 349 in 3Q FY2025 from 278 in 3Q FY2024.
Meanwhile, Eco-Shop chief executive officer and executive director Jessica Ng said the company would evaluate their opportunities to venture into the ASEAN market in the future, as the dollar shop segment in the region is still new.
Dollar shops offer a wide range of products at fixed, low prices and typically carry daily items like household goods, snacks, and personal care products, and may also include items like stationery and hardware.
However, she said the group would likely focus their business expansion in Malaysia for now, so that more Malaysians would have access to affordable products.
As of today, Eco-Shop has 358 stores in Malaysia, comprising 336 Eco-Shop stores and 22 Eco-Plus stores.
Today, Eco-Shop debuted on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia at RM1.25, a premium of 12 sen from its initial public offering (IPO) price of RM1.13, with 25 million shares traded.
Under its listing exercise, the company had raised RM419.87 million, where RM200 million or 51 per cent would be utilised for distribution centre expansion, RM56.27 million (14.4 per cent) for new store opening, and RM8.52 million (2.2 per cent) for IT hardware and software.
"RM100 million or 25.5 per cent would be utilised to repay bank borrowings, and RM27.32 million (7.0 per cent) for IPO and listing expenses," it said.
At 5 pm, Eco-Shop closed the day trading at RM1.20, seven sen higher than its issue price of RM1.13, with the company also emerging as the most active stock for the day with 209.16 million shares changing hands.

Highway operators must invest in smart tech and R&D

AS Malaysians embarked on their annual Hari Raya journey back to their hometowns in early April, the nation witnessed an all-too-familiar scene—heavy congestion on major highways. Social media platforms were flooded with images and stories of gridlocked traffic, restless children, and long queues at rest stops. While these stories have become a routine part of festive seasons, they highlight a deeper issue: the increasing inadequacy of our highway infrastructure and traffic management systems to cope with rising vehicle numbers. According to the Transport Ministry, Malaysia had 36.3 million registered motor vehicles as of Oct 2023. The Malaysian Automotive Association further reported over 816,000 new vehicle registrations in 2024. This exponential growth has placed immense pressure on our road networks, particularly during peak seasons. The Malaysian Highway Authority estimated that during the Hari Raya peak period, approximately 2.77 million vehicles used the highway network each day—a staggering number by any measure. A need for more than just extra lanes Among the many toll highway operators in Malaysia, PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) is the largest and one of the most established in Southeast Asia. It manages the North-South Expressway, ELITE, the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway, and both Penang bridges. It also owns TERAS Teknologi, the developer of the Touch 'n Go and SmartTAG systems. Despite its vast experience and high toll revenue, PLUS—and highway operators more broadly—have not introduced many innovative traffic solutions in recent years. The most visible initiative has been the introduction of 'Smart Lanes', which allow the temporary use of emergency lanes during traffic peaks. However, the use of the term 'Smart Lane' in Malaysia may be misleading. In developed nations, smart lane systems involve sophisticated traffic management technologies—variable speed limits, lane automation, and sensor-driven lane allocation. These systems dynamically adapt in real-time to changing traffic conditions. Malaysia's version, by contrast, is rudimentary. It involves opening the emergency lane for limited periods using flashing lights and signage with no smart technology integration. This often leads to confusion among drivers, bottlenecks when the lane ends, and potential delays for emergency services. A call for investment in real smart systems Highway operators need to move beyond short-term solutions and invest meaningfully in physical assets, rapid-response capabilities, and research and development (R&D). One area that needs immediate attention is incident management. Congestion is frequently caused by delays in clearing accidents or breakdowns. Setting up rapid-response teams equipped with motorcycles and emergency equipment can significantly reduce recovery time. Additionally, intelligent transport systems (ITS), artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) applications should be adopted more widely. With the right infrastructure, it is possible to monitor traffic patterns, detect incidents instantly, and manage lane usage in real-time. Such systems are already in use in many developed nations. Highway operators should also work closely with local research institutions and universities to develop and implement smart traffic solutions tailored to Malaysian conditions. Rethinking rest areas Another aspect often overlooked is the condition of rest and service areas (R&Rs). During peak travel seasons, these facilities are overwhelmed. Long queues at restrooms, insufficient parking, and limited food options frustrate users. More temporary or mobile toilets should be made available during festivals, and facilities must be maintained to high standards to ensure a pleasant travel experience. Toward seamless highway travel Ultimately, the future of highway travel in Malaysia must rest on a more holistic, user-centred approach. It is no longer sufficient to rely on toll collections and physical expansions of the road network. Operators must embrace innovation and technology. With the right investment in infrastructure, data analytics, and human capital, it is possible to ease congestion, improve safety, and offer road users a significantly more comfortable and efficient travel experience. Highway operators have a responsibility—and an opportunity—to make that vision a reality. ‒ June 4, 2025 Omar Yaakob is an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Aidiladha rush: Over two million vehicles expected daily on PLUS highways

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) expects over two million vehicles daily on its highways during the peak days, between June 5 and 6, as well as June 8 and 9, in conjunction with the Aidiladha holiday on June 7. In a statement today, PLUS announced that to distribute traffic and prevent vehicles from concentrating in specific locations on the highways simultaneously, the company has provided the MyPLUS-TTA digital travel schedule through the PLUS app to help users plan their journeys well in advance 'Due to this, PLUS urges the public to plan and schedule their travel itineraries earlier based on the MyPLUS-TTA recommendations, especially for trips back to their hometowns from the Klang Valley between June 5 and 7, as well as trips back to the Klang Valley between June 8 and 10 after the Aidiladha holiday,' according to the statement. PLUS said highway users can obtain the MyPLUS-TTA digital travel schedule by downloading and accessing the PLUS app to choose the most optimal travel times for journeys on the PLUS highways and the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) between June 5 and 10. According to PLUS, the MyPLUS-TTA initiative is part of PLUS's efforts to enhance the comfort of highway users during festive seasons based on data and travel patterns from previous festive seasons. For a smooth traffic flow in conjunction with the holiday, PLUS will activate the Smart Lane at 30 focal points identifiable by Green Flashing Lights and special signboards. This lane is only for light, private and passenger vehicles, with a recommended speed limit of around 60 kilometres per hour (km/h). PLUS also reminds users to follow instructions of on-site personnel at these locations as well as not to use the emergency lanes at other locations where there are no Smart Lane routes in order to avoid legal action. From June 5 to 9, there will be no lane closures for maintenance works, except in cases of emergencies, accidents and critical repairs. Meanwhile, PLUS is also taking several other steps to further facilitate the movement of the public during the festive season, including additional preparations at toll plazas and Rest and Service areas (R&R). Among the initiatives implemented include providing 26 additional toilet cabin units at rest stops and selected toll plazas to enhance the comfort of highway users, complementing the existing toilet facilities at those locations. PLUS also requests the public's cooperation to plan their journeys well and to use the public facilities provided, such as restrooms and prayer rooms at toll plazas and nearby R&R areas. The public can obtain traffic information and plan their journeys through the PLUS app, PUTRI, Virtual Assistant — PUTRI, X@plustrafik, electronic signboards (VMS) at selected locations, while for emergency assistance, contact PLUSLine 1800-88-0000 or LPT2Line 1800-88-0220. — Bernama
