The C8 Corvette Finally Ditches Its Infamous Button Wall for 2026

Chevrolet's C8 Corvette is about to receive its first major refresh, just in time for the 2026 model year — and the big news is what's happening inside the cabin. The Corvette Stingray, E-Ray, Z06, and ZR1 models will all receive a thoroughly reworked interior, a change which has been rumored for nearly as long as the car has been on sale. The C8's famous wall of buttons is no more, replaced now by a much more open layout.
The cabin of the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette lineup is dominated by a new tri-screen layout. Ahead of the driver sits a large 14-inch digital information center, flanked on the right by an upsized 12.7-inch central infotainment screen. To the left of the steering wheel, you'll find a new 6.6-inch auxiliary touchscreen. The screen is driver-configurable with instrumentation like trip mileage or Performance Traction Management, allowing you to customize your C8 experience in new ways.

The center console has also been reworked, to adopt many of the controls lost with the button wall, while climate controls are now located below the infotainment screen. A wireless charging pad has been added to the console as well, and drive mode buttons are now in-line with the shifter. There are also new cupholders, which feature genuine aluminum trim in higher-optioned models.
Overall the changes don't seem massive, but the interior of the car does look quite a bit different. GM has taken the opportunity to add the first asymmetrical interior to the portfolio, with the all-new Jet Black and Adrenaline Red option. Other choices include Sky Cool and Medium Ash Gray with Habanero accents, Santorini Blue, Very Dark Atmosphere, and Ultimate Suede.

Other changes include the E-Ray's Performance App now being offered across the lineup, giving drivers more information about their vehicle's status. Performance Data Recorder receives a new UI for 2026, helped along by the larger displays. PTM Pro also joins the lineup, allowing drivers to instantly disable traction control and stability control, while still retaining ABS and some front-axle controls active in the E-Ray. The hybrid also appears to pick up a new set of five-spoke wheels for the new year, which look pretty funky.

GM has also used the interior announcement to confirm a new brake package for the ZR1 with ZTK package, bringing 10-piston front and 6-piston rear carbon ceramics, which are the largest brakes ever fitted to the American sports car. Those shouldn't be a huge surprise given the car's diabolical performance figures and 233-mph top speed.
It's important to remember that these changes won't take place until the model year 2026 changeover, but order books for those Corvettes should already be open at this time. If you want to be one of the first people to drive a C8 without the button wall, I'd be making a call to the local Chevy dealer pronto.

The rising popularity of larger cars such as SUVs in Europe is driving up the height of car bonnets, raising concerns about road safety - especially for children - according to a report by the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E). Higher front ends reduce drivers' ability to see small children directly in front of the vehicle, the Brussels-based NGO warned. In accidents, SUVs and pick-up trucks tend to hit adult pedestrians above the centre of gravity, often impacting vital organs and increasing the likelihood that victims are thrown forward and run over. In contrast, smaller cars strike lower on the body, making it more likely that pedestrians fall onto the bonnet and roll off to the side, improving chances of survival. The average bonnet height in the European Union and United Kingdom has increased by 0.5 centimetres annually since 2010, reaching 83.4 centimetres in 2024, T&E said. Nearly half of all newly registered vehicles now have bonnet heights exceeding 85 centimetres. A cited study based on Belgian data found that raising bonnet height from 80 to 90 centimetres increases the risk of death for pedestrians and cyclists in case of an accident by more than 25%. The growing heights of bonnets is mainly due to the increasing popularity of SUVs and off-road vehicles. These two segments accounted for more than 40% of all new registrations in Germany last year, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). As of January 1 this year, approximately 6.6 million SUVs were registered in Germany, a nearly 10% annual increase. SUVs now make up more than 13% of all cars registered in Germany. German experts say larger vehicles offer better protection for occupants, but increase injury risks for others due to their mass and shape. However, the German Insurers Accident Research group (UDV) urged caution in interpreting the findings. While bonnet height can be a risk factor, injury severity also depends on speed, vehicle design, and use of driver-assistance systems, it said.

PA Turnpike removes tollbooths at interchanges to improve safety

Jun. 11—WILKES-BARRE — As part of its next step toward modernizing its operations and meeting customer experience for more seamless travel, the Pennsylvania Turnpike has started removing toll plazas along its system. Starting with the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476), contractors have completely removed the tollbooths and canopy from the interchange. Toll plazas are being demolished where Open Road Tolling (ORT) has launched, east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension. Each interchange will be reconstructed to provide an unobstructed traffic flow. While each demolition will be unique to its physical location, timing and traffic, the entire process will prioritize customer safety. As contractors continue their demolition work, drivers should be prepared for new temporary traffic patterns and should pay attention to crews in work zones. "The PA Turnpike has been a leader in transportation from the day we opened in 1940 as 'America's First Superhighway' and while traditional tollbooths made practical sense then, we now have more advanced and efficient systems that better serve today's 21st century customers," said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. "The switch to ORT modernizes the Pennsylvania Turnpike for today. We look forward to providing customers with a safer and more convenient travel experience on the PA Turnpike and better serving the communities we touch along the way." In an ORT system, Compton said tolls are charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures — called gantries — located between interchanges. Equipment on the gantry and in the roadway processes E-ZPass or Toll By Plate transactions. Compton said ORT reduces confusion and lane switching associated with traditional, stop-and-go tolling. The switch to ORT in the east occurred in January. ORT will launch on the mainline PA Turnpike's western section in 2027 and tollbooths on the mainline will be fully removed across the system by the end of 2028. The PA Turnpike switched to All Electronic Tolling (AET) in March 2020, completing a process that began with the launch of E-ZPass in 2000. With electronic tolling equipment moving from the interchange to over the highway, traditional toll plazas will now be removed. Tollbooth removal eliminates obstacles, increases sight lines and reduces stress and distractions for customers entering and exiting the system. ORT will lead to $25 million yearly savings in interchange maintenance and operations costs and $50 million in yearly operational savings versus traditional collection methods. Beyond safety benefits, Compton said ORT also is better for the environment. Existing all-electronic systems have already led to reductions of up to 45% of CO2 emissions on the PA Turnpike, and an additional 7% of emissions reductions will be realized upon full ORT implementation. Toll plaza removal will also reduce the PA Turnpike's footprint by 150 acres. During demolitions, Pennsylvania State Police and PA Turnpike personnel will be positioned at impacted areas to assist drivers. Changeable message signs will also provide information on the traffic patterns. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions. Removal of tollbooths and the reconstruction of interchanges will continue East of Reading and on the Northeast Extension through 2026.
