France top scorer Eugénie Le Sommer joins Mexican club Toluca
TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) — France all-time leading scorer Eugénie Le Sommer has signed a contract to play for Mexican club Toluca, where she will reunite with former Lyon coach Patrice Lair.
The 36-year-old forward parted ways with Lyon in May after 15 seasons and wasn't chosen for the national team for the Women's European Championship.
Toluca, located near Mexico City, said late Friday that Le Sommer has joined for the upcoming Liga MX Apertura season.
Le Sommer's former France and Lyon teammate Amandine Henry also plays for Toluca. The defensive midfielder joined last year.
Le Sommer has scored 94 international goals in 200 appearances for France. She posted a broken heart emoji on her Instagram page when she wasn't selected for the Euro 2025 squad.

Maple Leafs 'Would Love' to Sign Brad Marchand, Claims Pierre LeBrun
Maple Leafs 'Would Love' to Sign Brad Marchand, Claims Pierre LeBrun originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Florida Panthers veteran Brad Marchand is approaching free agency for the first time in his career, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are watching closely. Advertisement The forward has never entered the open market during his 16 years of NHL experience as he's always signed contract extensions in advance. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, if the Florida Panthers can't make room to re-sign the 36-year-old winger, Toronto plans to act fast. Speaking on TSN's "Insider Trading" on Saturday, LeBrun reported the Panthers have made a strong presentation to Marchand and his camp, but a final decision hasn't been made yet. "[After re-signing Sam Bennett] the focus is on Brad Marchand," LeBrun said. "The Panthers have made an offer to Brad Marchand. They had a big presentation for him. Now it's sitting in Brad Marchand's camp, and it's up to him and his agent to have a response for the Panthers here in the coming days. Advertisement "It might be hard for him to leave Florida, but if he does — and I think it's more likely that he signs — the Toronto Maple Leafs (are) absolutely among the suitors that would love to make Brad Marchand an offer." The 37-year-old winger is coming off helping the Panthers secure a second straight Stanley Cup win. It was Marchand's second overall title after winning the championship with the Boston Bruins in 2011. Florida Panthers center Brad Marchand (63) hoists the Stanley Cup after winning Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images Marchand scored 10 goals and 20 points in 23 playoff games despite his age and remains an elite high-stakes player, someone Toronto has lacked during the Core Four era. Florida has already locked up Sam Bennett on a maximum eight-year, $64 million extension and only has $11 million in cap space to try and keep Marchand and fellow unrestricted free agent Aaron Ekblad. Advertisement The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, are in a much healthier financial position, having $21 million in current cap space even after re-signing veteran center John Tavares to an extension. Timberwolves Poised for Big Move After Naz Reid Extension
Timberwolves Poised for Big Move After Naz Reid Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The first domino has fallen in the Minnesota Timberwolves' offseason. According to Shams Charania, the Wolves signed center Naz Reid to a lucrative five-year, $125 million extension on June 27, securing Reid's future in Minnesota long term. Advertisement A contract of that magnitude is going to have impacts elsewhere on the Timberwolves roster, and with many veteran players facing uncertainty heading into the offseason, the commitment to Reid is surely a sign they could be shown the door. Naz ReidCredit: Matt Blewett-Imagn Images Reacting to the Reid contract news, insider Dane Moore argued that with Reid's contract secured, Julius Randle and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are on the chopping block. "A 5-year, $125M is a significant step above the 5-year, $109M opt-in and extend option for Naz Reid. Wolves are still finalizing structure of Reid's new deal, per source," Moore wrote in a post on X. "With a deal of that size, without making another significant cost-cutting move, the Wolves will not be able to retain both Randle and Alexander-Walker while staying under the 2nd apron." Advertisement While there is the possibility of retaining Randle and Alexander-Walker, a departure is looking more likely with the commitment to Reid. Randle has a $30.9 million player option in his contract, while Alexander-Walker is an unrestricted free agent. However, retaining both would likely put the Timberwolves into the second apron, which would cost the franchise $65 million in taxes -- a tough bill to front for the new ownership group, who just officially took over last week. The impasse this offseason was always going to involve the trio of Reid, Randle and Alexander-Walker. However, there is still the possibility that the team moves off another veteran by trade and keeps all three. Rudy Gobert would likely be the outside candidate to be moved by trade, but Reid's contract insinuates that he won't be taking on a prominent starting role, suggesting Gobert is safe. Aliyah Boston Highlights Concerning Indiana Fever Trend
Aliyah Boston Highlights Concerning Indiana Fever Trend originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever averted disaster on Friday night. After a strong start that saw Indiana take a 23-point lead in the opening quarter against the Dallas Wings, Paige Bueckers and Co. persistently chipped away at the Fever's advantage. Advertisement Thanks to their unrelenting play, the Wings finally took the lead at around the midway point of the fourth quarter after rookie JJ Quinerly's three-point play. At that point, it seemed like the Fever were on the brink of another late-game collapse, which was exactly what happened on Thursday when they gave up an eight-point fourth-quarter lead to the Los Angeles Sparks to lose, 85-75. Indiana was able to hold on against Bueckers and the Wings, though. They held off Dallas' comeback to escape with a hard-fought 94-86 win, thereby avoiding another disastrous meltdown in the fourth quarter. Advertisement 'Once again, leads did slip away in this game, and last game,' Boston said, via Nathan Baird of IndyStar. 'But for us it's about making sure we turn that page, we get back the lead, we keep it, we get big defensive stops. It's a game of runs and you just have to make sure you have the best one at the end.' As Boston said, the big takeaway from Friday night is that the Fever were able to fight through adversity. This has not been the case for them many times this season, and their 8-8 record is a testament to this fact. It's also important to note that Indiana was able to show their tenacity against the Wings even without Caitlin Clark, who was out for a second straight game due to a groin injury. Advertisement The Fever will face adversity again as they progress deeper into the campaign. As Boston stated, it's essential that they've proven their ability to battle back and prevail--with or without Clark.
