In advance of the draft lottery broadcast, an actual lottery takes place with a representative from the accounting firm Ernst & Young overseeing the entire process. The results of that drawing are then sealed in an envelope for NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Mark Tatum to reveal in descending order to a panel of 14 anxious team representatives.
The No. 1 pick in the draft is awarded to the team that draws the winning four-number combination from the lottery machine. There are 14 ping-pong balls numbered one through 14, with each number representing a different lottery team. In total, there are 1,001 possible four-number combinations, but only one winning combination.
Once a winner is selected, the drawing process is repeated to determine picks 2-4. The rest of the draft is done in order of win percentage. How many rounds does the NBA Draft have?

In the '60s, the drafts ran until teams had run out of prospects, leading to drafts lasting up to 21 rounds. In 1974, 10 rounds were more common and in 1985 it was shortened to seven rounds. ESPN's Aaron Schatz recently answered this question for each NFL team, and when it came to the Jaguars, further bolstering the defensive end depth by signing former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney is the move that was selected. "The Jaguars have a strong pair of starting edge rushers with Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker," Schatz wrote. "But there are questions about the depth behind them. Emmanuel Ogbah is 32 years old and had just five sacks as a full-time starter in Miami last season. Myles Cole had no sacks on 11.3% of defensive snaps as a seventh-round rookie." Adding to the depth behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker has already been a priority for the Jaguars. Since the draft ended, GM James Gladstone has already signed Emmanuel Ogbah, Dennis Gardeck, and Dawuane Smoot. So, given that those players have been brought in over Clowney already, I'm not sure another addition at defensive end is in the cards for the Jaguars. With that said, the reason three veteran signings have been made is because improved depth behind Hines-Allen and Walker is a must. While those two will shoulder the workload here, this is a heavily rotated position with four or sometimes even five players seeing snaps each week, which puts a premium on having strong depth. "You want, we talked about it the other day, waves of maybe some different types of rushers at times," Liam Coen said of the defensive end depth. "When you're playing in the trenches specifically, when you come in and maybe you're a UDFA or a rookie in general, that size, that strength, that speed, especially in the trenches, is different for anybody. "So there's always a curve, there's always going to be a learning curve and physical growth curve that is going to occur. But getting some of those guys that have established themselves in this league and played meaningful snaps, I think will just help us in times of crisis and just to be a little bit more consistent in some way, knowing that we're pretty young as a team in general." Clowney spent the 2024 season with the Carolina Panthers, where he appeared in 14 games, totaling 44 pressures and six sacks. Among all defensive ends, Clowney ranked 20th in PFF's pass rush win rate metric. Clowney has made three Pro Bowls in his 11 NFL seasons and was named a second-team All-Pro once back in 2016. According to Over the Cap, the Jaguars have $18.91 million in available salary cap space still remaining.

Chicago Bulls trade down in the 2nd round of NBA draft
The Chicago Bulls are moving down — but not out — in the second round of the NBA draft. The Bulls made a swap Thursday morning with the Los Angeles Lakers, trading the No. 45 pick for the No. 55 pick and cash considerations, per a report by ESPN. General manager Marc Eversley hinted after Wednesday's first round that the Bulls were considering a trade down in the second round. The Bulls currently have 12 players under contract for the 2025-26 season, a number that will jump to 13 if they complete expected plans to re-sign Josh Giddey. The roster is expected to undergo further change before the start of the season, but this overstuffed lineup of guaranteed contracts makes the draft a bit of a puzzle for the Bulls this year. The Bulls already added young talent by selecting French teenager Noa Essengue with the No. 12 pick. Essengue is only 18 years old — and won't turn 19 until December — which means the Bulls will take their time developing him into a regular rotation player. If the Bulls still choose to pick in the second round, that player would have to make a considerable impression during summer league in Las Vegas to muscle out a spot on an already crowded roster.
