Air India Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight postponed due to ‘airspace restrictions, added precautionary checks'
Operational delays due to 'multiple disruptions' in global aviation routes led an Air India Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight on Tuesday to being postponed.
Officials of Air India confirmed to The Indian Express that the flight, which was scheduled to take off at 1.10 pm, will now depart on Wednesday.
A spokesperson said that the move happened '… due to the unavailability of the aircraft, resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed.'
An official speaking on the condition of anonymity said, 'The Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight is preceded by Amsterdam to New Delhi and New Delhi to Ahmedabad in the sector. Since the incoming flight (AI-156) from Amsterdam to New Delhi was delayed by over two hours, the New Delhi-Ahmedabad flight could not take off in time on Tuesday and therefore the subsequent flight to Gatwick (AI-159) was cancelled as it would not be able to fly out in the designated time window that is permissible after a delay.'
He said that multiple disruptions in several sectors had caused flight delays: 'There has been a baggage issue at one of the busiest airports in Europe, combined with delays on the Middle East sector due to airspace closure over Iran and Israel. Therefore, operations have been impacted causing delays on the international route. Once a flight is delayed beyond a certain period, some sectors are asked to reschedule the flights for the next day.'
The official added that following the crash on June 12, the flight, which was originally scheduled to depart on Saturday, was 'cancelled' to allow the airline time to streamline its changed flight number from AI-171 to AI-159 and for other 'formalities' due to the crash. Later, Saturday's cancelled flight was cleared for flying and took off on Monday.
'The passengers have booked tickets several weeks in advance and the operations on the route will continue as per schedule even as we come to terms with the loss and tragedy that occurred on June 12… So, AI-159, as it is now numbered, will fly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week as scheduled,' the official added.
The Air India spokesperson said, 'We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers… We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by the passengers.'

Air India operations disrupted amid post-crash checks, flight cancellations
Several Air India international flights were cancelled on Tuesday, days after a deadly crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in Ahmedabad raised serious safety and operational concerns. Among the affected services were Delhi-Dubai (AI 915), Delhi-Vienna (AI 153), Delhi-Paris (AI 143), Ahmedabad-London (AI 159), Bengaluru-London (AI 133), and London-Amritsar (AI 170). Most of these routes are operated using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the same aircraft type involved in the June 12 tragedy that killed 241 people shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Air India cited operational constraints and additional safety checks for the disruptions. A spokesperson said, 'We regret the inconvenience and are making alternate travel arrangements, including hotel accommodations, full refunds, or complimentary rescheduling where required.' Dreamliner diversions and mid-air turnbacks Amid the cancellations, flight AI 315 from Hong Kong to Delhi was forced to turn back after a technical glitch was detected mid-flight. In another incident, a San Francisco-Mumbai flight (AI 180), which was rerouted through Kolkata due to Pakistani airspace restrictions, was grounded during a scheduled halt at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport after a technical snag was suspected. All 228 people on board, including 211 passengers, were safely deboarded. Some passengers were accommodated in local hotels, though scenes of confusion were reported at the airport.

Air India cancels seven international flights within 24 hours, days after Ahmedabad plane crash
Air India Plane Crash Aftermath: On 17 June 2025, Air India announced the cancellation of several key international flights, affecting passengers across various routes. The Air India cancellations follow operational issues and precautionary measures mandated by MoCA after the recent Ahmedabad plane crash that killed 241 passengers and crew. Air India flight AI-159 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was cancelled due to the unavailability of the aircraft. The airline cited airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks as reasons, emphasising that the cancellation was not due to any technical fault. This cancellation also led to the subsequent cancellation of flight AI-170 from London Gatwick to Amritsar on the same day. Following the Ahmedabad-London cancellation, the London Gatwick to Amritsar flight AI-170 was also cancelled on 17 June. This disruption impacted many passengers travelling between the UK and northern India. Air India's Delhi to Paris flight AI-143 was cancelled after mandatory pre-flight checks revealed a hydraulic issue. Due to night operation restrictions at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, the flight could not be delayed and was cancelled. Consequently, the return flight AI-142 from Paris to Delhi on 18 June was also cancelled. The airline is providing alternative arrangements and hotel accommodation to affected passengers. On 17 June 2025, Air India reportedly cancelled flight AI 915 from Delhi to Dubai amid ongoing operational disruptions following the recent Ahmedabad crash. This cancellation marks the sixth Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight grounded that day as the airline conducts rigorous post-crash safety checks. Official confirmation is awaited, but media reports indicate the aircraft developed technical issues during pre-flight inspections, prompting the cancellation. Similarly, flight AI 153 from Delhi to Vienna is believed to have been cancelled on the same day, though the airline has yet to officially confirm this. Like other affected flights, this cancellation is likely linked to precautionary measures and maintenance checks on the Dreamliner fleet. Air India also cancelled its Bengaluru to London and Mumbai to San Francisco flights on 17 June. The Air India Mumbai-San Francisco flight was terminated at Kolkata due to a suspected technical snag, prompting passengers to deplane and causing disruption at the airport. Air India's Bengaluru to London flight was cancelled on 17 June 2025, adding to the growing list of international flight disruptions faced by the airline in the wake of recent operational challenges. While detailed official reasons for this specific cancellation have not been extensively disclosed, it is understood to be part of the wider impact of technical and logistical issues affecting Air India's fleet, particularly involving Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. Air India has offered full refunds to passengers affected by the cancellations on 17 June. The airline informed that travellers can request refunds through the airline's official website under the 'Manage Booking' section or by contacting Air India's reservation offices. Refunds will be credited to the original payment method, and the airline has assured passengers that cancellation charges will be waived given the exceptional circumstances. Additionally, Air India is providing flexible rebooking options and a one-time waiver on rescheduling fees to ease the inconvenience caused by these disruptions. Passengers who booked through travel agents or third-party platforms have been advised to reach out directly to their respective agents for refund assistance.
