
Indian astronaut to conduct key food, nutrition experiments in space
New Delhi: Indian astronaut and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to conduct exclusive food and nutrition-related experiments onboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the upcoming Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said on Saturday.
The experiments — developed under a collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), with support from NASA — aim to pioneer space nutrition and self-sustaining life support systems vital for future long-duration space travel.
Dr Singh said the first ISS experiment will examine the impact of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae — a high-potential, nutrient-rich food source.
The study will focus on key growth parameters and the changes in transcriptomes, proteomes, and metabolomes of various algal species in space compared to Earth conditions.
Presenting an example of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Space biology experiments aboard the ISS will be conducted using indigenously developed biotechnology kits under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
These specialised kits, tailored for microgravity conditions, have been designed and validated by Indian scientists to ensure precision and reliability in space-based research.
Their deployment marks a major milestone in India's ability to deliver world-class scientific tools for frontier research and underscores the country's growing self-reliance in critical technologies for space exploration and biotechnology.'Microalgae grow rapidly, produce high-protein biomass, absorb carbon dioxide, and release oxygen — making them perfect candidates for sustainable space nutrition and closed-loop life support systems,' said Dr Singh.
The second experiment will investigate the growth and proteomic response of cyanobacteria — specifically Spirulina and Synechococcus —under microgravity, using urea- and nitrate-based media.
The research will evaluate the potential of Spirulina as a space 'superfood' due to its high protein and vitamin content, assess the feasibility of using nitrogen sources derived from human waste, such as urea, for cyanobacterial growth, and study the effects of microgravity on cellular metabolism and biological efficiency.
These insights are critical for developing closed-loop, self-sustaining life support systems essential for long-duration space missions. 'These organisms could be the key to carbon and nitrogen recycling in spacecraft and future space habitats,' the minister said.
Shukla is part of the first team of Indian astronauts trained for human spaceflight, with Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair serving as his designated backup.
The Ax-4 mission, managed by Axiom Space and launched via SpaceX Falcon 9, is a landmark for India's first astronaut-scientist-led space biology experiments onboard the ISS.

Garden Reach inks pact with Norway firm, India to build its first polar research vehicle
Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a Government of India undertaking, signed an MoU with Norwegian firm Kongsberg on Tuesday to co-design and build India's first-ever polar research vehicle (PRV) indigenously. The MoU was signed in Oslo in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who termed it 'a commitment to fostering scientific discovery, advancing India's capabilities in polar and ocean research, and contributing to global efforts to address pressing challenges like climate change.' A PRV is a ship which serves as a platform for research in the polar regions (areas surrounding the North and South Poles). It can also help scientists undertake research in the ocean realm. India currently operates three research base stations in the polar regions — Bharati and Maitri in Antarctica, and Himadri in the Arctic region — and had been planning to have its own PRV for a while now. In 2023, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that the country would have its first PRV within five years at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore. According to the Ministry, the MoU marks an important milestone for India's shipbuilding sector as it will receive design expertise for developing the PRV 'while taking into account the requirement of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, which will use it for research activities in the polar and southern ocean realms'. With snakebites resulting in thousands of fatalities throughout India every year, most notably during monsoon, this development has the potential to provide a life-saving, organic solution when every minute counts. Kakoda plant: An ayurvedic antidote for snake venom As per centuries-old Ayurvedic wisdom, there are certain indigenous plants that have antivenom content. The Kakoda plant, or also called Kankrol, Kantola, or Katral, is one such climbing vine found in rural villages everywhere. Used since time immemorial in traditional herbal remedies, this plant is now also emerging for its supposed capacity to neutralize venom. In contrast to current antivenom remedies involving hospitalization, the Kakoda plant potentially provides a natural, in-field remedy in emergency situations, particularly in regions where medical assistance is delayed or otherwise not available. Leaves and roots of the Kakoda plant are regarded as the most medicinally active. If a snakebite is caused, Ayurvedic healers recommend that fresh leaves be crushed into a paste and used locally over the site of the bite. It is said to retard the spread of the venom and start neutralizing its action immediately. The juice from the leaves can also be ingested to act as the body's internal immune system against the poison. Powder from the dried leaves and roots is also applied in traditional medicines to calm the intensity of the venom symptoms. Why snake sightings increase with the monsoon's arrival As the monsoon season rushes through India, it brings welcome relief from the summer heat. The damp and cool air, however, also forces snakes from their natural habitats into human dwellings in quest of shelter. These enhanced contacts result in a sharp rise in snakebite cases during this season. Snakes like to find shelter in dark, secluded places within homes, garages, or fields and thus are easily accidentally encountered. Although most are not venomous, even the bite from one of the few venomous species can be life-threatening unless treated immediately. Awareness and availability of proper first-aid protocols are therefore absolutely essential. Modern research validates Kakoda's antivenom properties Contemporary research vindicates this ancient remedy. Dr. Kuntal Das of Mallige College of Pharmacy has researched the bioactive components of the plant and has found the Kakoda root possesses antivenom activities. His research lends scientific substance to the use of the plant in traditional medicine for centuries. As reported, prompt use of the paste may start neutralizing venom as early as five minutes, although this should not be regarded as a substitute for medical treatment, particularly in the case of extreme envenomation. Nevertheless, it can be an invaluable first line of defense until the experts arrive. Aside from its medicinal properties, the Kakoda plant is also an overlooked superfood. Cultivated in hot and damp climates, its prickly fruit is traditionally consumed in native Indian foods. Furthermore, the plant was said to contain 50% more protein than some of the most popular vegetables, and thus a curative and healthy ingredient. This dual advantage of healing and sustenance is one of the reasons why the Kakoda plant has been deeply rooted in rural lives, even though its antivenom qualities are not well known.
