'I took £20 to a huge car boot sale and it was clear everyone was buying the same item'
Hundreds of bargain hunters flocked to the car boot sale in search of a good deal, but there was one item that seemed to be on everyone's shopping list

It was 'already heaving' when Emma Gill arrived just after 11am, with rows of sellers and hundreds of bargain hunters in attendance.
"There was everything from clothing - 'all ladies clothes 50p' shouted one seller - to trainers, toys, tools, toilet rolls (£6 for a pack of 36 in case you're wondering), plants, computer games and everything in between. Someone was even selling wheelchairs, for a bargain £30 each."

She observed one young lad who seemed thrilled with a tub of mini cars his mum had bagged, insisting on carrying the entire box while being pushed in his trolley. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here

Another shopper was spotted eagerly sifting through a box of plates, likely in search of a hidden gem that could fetch a tidy sum.

She highlighted 'the meat man' as the star attraction, who pitches up with his sizeable Nationwide Meats truck, evidently enjoying brisk business.

"He's quite vocal on the microphone, which is good as you get to hear what deals he's got," she said. "A guy in front of me bought '£80 worth of tomahawk steaks' for £30 and got a roll of beef thrown in for good measure. Another got minty lamb, ribs and chicken for £20.

"I ended up with a 'plenty for £20' deal too. After initially asking for just some steaks, before I knew it, I was handing over 20 quid for a bag containing 770g of peppered steaks, 2.7kg of jumbo sausages and 3kg of chicken drumsticks - with no idea where I was going to store it all."

As Emma lugged her hefty bag of meat back to her car, she overheard one woman on the phone informing someone, "the meat man is here".

Emma added: "Who knew a midweek car boot sale would be so popular? But in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, who wouldn't want the chance to save a few quid - and pick up some bargain bangers while they're at it!"

The car boot sale takes place in the stadium car park in Burden Way, conveniently situated next to Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park. Since its launch in 2016, the Sunday event has expanded to attract up to 400 sellers each week.

Drivers 'stuck and starving' as horror crash shuts motorway for 10 hours

An air ambulance was spotted landing nearby as drivers became stuck in a large police closure. Drivers have been left "trapped and starving" for hours after a serious motorway crash. Emergency services raced to the collision on the M62 at 6pm on Thursday. The stretch of road eastbound from junction 22 A627 near Rishworth Moor in Denshaw, to junction 24 for New Hey Road in Huddersfield, remained closed for 10 hours. ‌ An air ambulance was spotted landing nearby as drivers became stuck in a large police closure. No further details about the number of vehicles or condition of those involved have been released by police yet. ‌ The closure saw thousands of motorists caught in the lengthy delays, including Leigh Leopards fans on their way home from the Super League match at John Smith's Stadium, in Huddersfield. One X user said: "M62 shut, nightmare for Leigh fans." Another posted: "On M62 so Leigh fans [are] stuck." ‌ Others claimed they had been stuck for 'seven hours' before the closure was lifted and traffic was released by emergency services. Manchester Evening News reports that just after 1am, one stuck driver said they "can't wait to tell everyone in my life i was stuck on the M62 for 7 hours." Another said in frustration "You actually going to get us moving now or what? Nearly seven hours is beyond embarrassing and nowhere near good enough!" ‌ Driver Danny said on X: "Hurry up please lads I'm starving" after waiting for nearly six hours. Another vented: "Please please please give us some news. We are near the front. No one is moving or has moved or is being taken off the motorway." And just after 10pm, stranded motorist Chris said: "So I have been stuck in my car on the M62 for *4hrs* now. "Just documenting this in case the weather turns and I freeze to death. PS, can we have better trains from Hull to Liverpool please, as I would take trains if quicker."

Couple gut classic car from 1950s and make extraordinary find worth hundreds

Sharon Tapson took to TikTok after her husband had finished renovating their 1954 Riley, which had been sat in their barn untouched for two decades. Sharon Tapson and her husband were gobsmacked after uncovering an astonishing discovery while refurbishing their vintage 1954 Riley car, which had been gathering dust in their barn for 20 years. In a TikTok video brimming with excitement, Sharon shared: "First let me show you what it looked inside before and after," revealing the transformation of the vehicle. She then disclosed the unexpected find: "He found it down the side of one of those seats," as she displayed a photo of the dusty maroon leather seats that had been stripped out. ‌ Sharon elaborated on the lone discovery: "He didn't find anything else - just this on its own. Now we're not sure whether it's real or not, but it looks quite old and gold-plated. If anyone can tell us if this real that would be greatly appreciated." ‌ The item in question seemed to be a quartz Rolex watch. The couple's find sparked a flurry of comments after Sharon posted about it, leaving them optimistic about its potential worth. Sharon added more details: "It doesn't actually say anything on the back, but there's obviously some patina there," and pondered whether to seek a jeweller's opinion, reports the Manchester Evening News. Responding to the post, a TikTok user chimed in: "Rolex did make quartz watches from 70s to 2001. It was called the Oyster Quartz!" Another comment buoyed Sharon's hopes, affirming: "Yes it's real, it is in the Oyster Collection, around 1970." One individual highlighted: "They still make quartz today. The Oyster range has three battery watches in it. Take it to an horologist for confirmation." Another advised: "Looks real, take it to a reputable jeweller/valuer to assess." ‌ And another person enthusiastically affirmed: "100% real! Great find!" However, the authenticity of the prized discovery was questioned by some sceptics on TikTok, with one noting: "It looks like a Rolex Cellini watch from the 60s-70s but the back is wrong and it doesn't say Geneve under Rolex on the face." And another challenged: "Rolex introduced it's first Quartz Oysterwatch in 1977, this watch looks to be a clone/fake of the Rolex Geneve. If genuine they only made 25,000 Quartz watches making this quite valuable if real." ‌ Yet certain TikTok users defended the timepiece, suggesting it met "military specification". One commentator remarked: "Government supplied them to pilots and submariners." Another concurred: "Came here to say this." Regarding the Rolex Oysterquartz, watch specialists BeckerTime have stated: "Rolex's first commercially available quartz watch was the Quartz Date 5100. Introduced in 1970, this watch shared the Beta 21 movement, developed by Rolex and 20 other Swiss brands. "For 25 years Rolex produced the Oysterquartz in Datejust models (17000 stainless steel, 17013 steel and yellow gold, 17014 steel and white gold), and Day-Date models in all gold (19018yellow gold, 19019 white gold). It has been estimated that there were less than 25,000 Oysterquartz watches ever produced."

DVLA set to make major driving licence change affecting 50 million people

The new ' Wallet' app, available on both iOS and Android devices, will store digital versions of government-issued documents, with motorists able to access their driving licences on their smartphone The UK government is set to revolutionise ID access for roughly 50 million Brits with a new app. By end of the summer, drivers across the nation will be able to present their driving licences digitally via smartphones. Dubbed the ' Wallet', the app is expected to securely house digital forms of state-issued documents, with ministers calling it a revolutionary step. The 'Wallet' will function seamlessly on both iOS and Android platforms. Furthermore, this digital ID is slated to be accepted by supermarkets as proof of age when making certain purchases, reports the Manchester Evening News. ‌ Military veterans are in line to be early testers of the app, enabling them to carry their HM Armed Forces Veteran Card electronically. The government has underscored that while adopting the digital version will be an option, traditional physical documents will still be valid. ‌ More than just a digital ID holder, the app is designed to offer extra perks, such as reviewing one's driving history and managing licence updates all from one location. It will even allow users to check their penalty points, backed by a two-factor authentication system to ramp up security against fraudulent replication. The move is anticipated to streamline processes and potentially result in savings of about £45 billion. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, saying: "This is a game changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID. "The innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure." The move towards digitalisation is a key element of the government's strategy to "overhaul how the public sector uses technology", as stated by science and technology secretary Peter Kyle. The government's Plan for Change also seeks to "slash the time people waste dealing with annoying processes so they can focus on what matters to them". The current photocard driving licence, which is widely used by drivers across the UK, was first issued in 1998. This photocard had to be accompanied by a paper counterpart until this requirement was scrapped in 2015.
