Justice for Likhona Fose: Pakistani shop owner arrested in shocking murder, mutilation case
A spaza shop owner is the second suspect to be arrested for the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose body was found mutilated. Image: X A Pakistani spaza shop owner has been arrested as the second suspect in the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose body was found mutilated in Durban Deep, Roodepoort. IOL reported on Wednesday that the case of murder against the first suspect, 39-year-old Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, who is also accused of killing Likhona Fose, was postponed to June 18 for a formal bail application. Mnisi appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on charges of murder with the State indicating that it plans to oppose bail to Mnisi, who has a previous attempted murder conviction against him. In the latest development, City of Johannesburg's member of mayoral committee (MMC) for public safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika that the community played a pivotal role in the arrest of the Pakistani man. 'We were actually tipped off, and through the interrogation of Mduduzi and through the community, we managed to establish the link between Mduduzi and the Pakistani man," he said. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Tshwaku however, said he was not sure when the spaza shop owner will be appearing before court. He added that government and law enforcement authorities would fight to ensure that Mnisi and the Pakistani man, who cannot be named until he has appeared in court, are not released on bail. Next Stay Close ✕ On Wednesday, IOL reported that scores of concerned residents of Durban Deep indicated that they feel let down by the country's justice system, as Mnisi was out of prison on parole, for crimes including attempted murder and robbery, when he allegedly killed Likhona. Last week, IOL reported that City of Joburg Speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu and executive strategic advisor to the MMC of public safety, David Tembe, visited the family of Likhona. Reports indicate that the family suspects hate crime to be the motive in the murder of the Grade 8 pupil, who identified as a lesbian. Tembe, who was greeted to protesting community members and anti-gender-based violence activists, extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating: "Her tragic and brutal killing, suspected to be linked to occult practices, has shaken the community. The city stands with the family during this time of immense grief, reaffirming its commitment to fighting heinous crimes and protecting the most vulnerable." IOL News

Woman jailed for life after killing her father she believed used 'muthi' to kill her mother
IOL Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape pleaded guilty to the murder of her father, Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape, Picture: NPA A 28-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to killing her father because she believed he was responsible for the death of her mother has been jailed to life imprisonment. Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape was sentenced in the Polokwane High Court on Wednesday. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said despite Mehlape's guilty plea, the court imposed the prescribed minimum sentence because the State believed the guilty plea was motivated by overwhelming evidence rather than genuine remorse. Mehlape killed her father Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape, who was a Circuit Manager at the Limpopo Department of Education on December 28, 2023. The NPA Mehlape orchestrated the murder following claims made by a traditional healer, who alleged that her father was responsible for her mother's death through the use of "muthi". "When attempts to retaliate using traditional means failed, Mehlape enlisted the help of various family members to hire a contract killer, agreeing to pay R200,000 for the murder," explained NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi. The court heard that on the night of the murder Mehlape unlocked the gate and main door, granting the perpetrators access to the house. Malekutu was ambushed in his bedroom while asleep, shot multiple times, and robbed of several valuables, including his cellphone. A Ford Ranger double cab believed to have been used during the crime was seized during the arrests in Mankweng, and a firearm allegedly used in the killing was recovered during an arrest in Zebediela. Four others were also arrested in connection with the murder including traditional healer Mahlodi Melida Mathole, 34. The other three accused are Tshepo Gabriel Ranoto, Hlologelo Klaas Mogotlane, both 34, and Michael Sello Molongoane,42. Their trials have been separated and expected to appear in court on June 20, 2025 for trial. They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. In mitigation, Mehlape apologised to her family, noting that she is the primary caregiver of her toddler daughter and had unresolved disputes with her father. IOL News
