F1 and Le Mans winner Mass dies aged 78
Jochen Mass, who won the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix for McLaren, has died at the age of 78. The German passed away on Sunday because of complications following a stroke he suffered in February, his family announced. Mass, who competed in 114 Formula 1 grands prix and secured eight podium finishes, also won the Le Mans 24 Hours with Switzerland-based Sauber in 1989. "Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and a racing legend," his family said in a statement.
"Beyond mourning his death, we also celebrate his incredible life. A life that he loved sharing with all of you. A life that he lived to the absolute fullest."He is racing with all his friends again."Mass was the other driver in Gilles Villeneuve's fatal accident during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. Ferrari's Villeneuve came across Mass' March going slowly and a misunderstanding led to a collision. Mass was a mentor and driver coach on the Mercedes young driver programme during his final three years at Sauber, and helped Michael Schumacher before the future seven-time world champion entered F1. Mass finished his career with 32 world championship victories in sportscar racing with Alfa Romeo, Porsche and Sauber-Mercedes. From 1993 to 1997, Mass was a co-commentator on F1 for the German broadcaster RTL.

Menuisier retains full faith in Tamfana
A Group One winner last term in the Sun Chariot Stakes, Tamfana began the new season with a respectable second behind Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini at Sandown, but struggled to land a blow in the Lockinge Stakes with both the quick going and a less than perfect passage through the race counting against her at Newbury. Menuisier said: 'She's fine and has come out of the Lockinge well. Obviously the ground at Newbury was a touch quick and when she came to make her challenge the door was shut on her, then it was just a matter of coming home at her own pace after that. 'You saw in the Sandown Mile on good to soft ground she had the Lockinge winner covered and although Dancing Gemini may have been ahead of us, we had to carry a penalty. 'We learned plenty at Newbury, which was part of the reason why I went for the Lockinge. Sometimes you learn a lot more in defeat than in victory and I'm learning a lot at the moment.' Menuisier is 'open-minded' as to where to head next with the four-year-old, who has raced over a mile in her last five outings but has a multitude of entries for races over further. The Sussex-based Frenchman admitted his search for some cushion underfoot could see the daughter of Soldier Hollow miss Royal Ascot, but the Curragh's 10-furlong Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes at the end of the month (June 28) could represent a suitable alternative. Menuisier added: 'I'm open-minded what I do next in terms of race and trip and I think it will all depend on the weather. 'On good to soft ground I think she is amongst the very best, but on quicker ground she is not, so it will just be a case of playing it by ear. 'She could go to France and she could go anywhere. It is not a question of level, it is just finding her preferred conditions. 'She would need rain to go to Royal Ascot and if we don't go there we could go to the Pretty Polly the following week, so there are plenty of races and no stress and all options are open.' Also waiting for the rain to arrive is the well-regarded Janey Mackers, who was seen as a Classic contender earlier in the year, but after an underwhelming effort at Newmarket could next be seen competing in the Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies' Stakes at Goodwood on Sunday. 'We need to go grade by grade with her and she is suffering a bit from the dry weather at the moment,' continued Menuisier. 'Newmarket was definitely too quick and I won't run her on that ground again. I'll take my time and the next option is Goodwood, weather depending.'

'Kind-hearted' woman, 24, dies after collapsing during half marathon
Olivia Tuohy, 24, passed away after participating in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival on Sunday, May 25, and leaves behind her partner, parents, brother and a host of friends Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for an Irish woman who tragically lost her life after running the Edinburgh Half Marathon. Olivia Tuohy, a 24 year old athlete, sadly passed away on Sunday, May 25, following her participation in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. The Irish national, from County Clare, was a student at Queen Margaret University on the outskirts of the capital. A poignant death notice described Olivia as a "Olivia, a bright and beautiful spirit, passed away on the 25th May while participating in the Edinburgh Half Marathon." It continued: "Olivia's bubbly personality and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Olivia is survived by her heartbroken parents Kieran and Liz and her brother Stephen and his partner Laura, her loving partner Michael and his parents Maria-Elena and Steven, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and her friends both in Ireland and Edinburgh." Hailing from Ennis in County Clare, Ireland, Olivia was an integral part of the Clare Ladies Gaelic Football team. The team expressed their deep sorrow upon learning of her passing, reports Edinburgh Live. The club's statement read: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Olivia Tuohy. Her kindness, warmth, and vibrant spirit touched so many lives on and off the football field , and her absence will be felt profoundly. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, her partner and all who loved her during this difficult time. May she rest in peace." The Banner Ladies football club, for whom she also played, said: "We wish to express our sadness at the passing of our friend and former teammate, Olivia Tuohy, daughter of Liz and Kieran. Our thoughts and prayers are with her parents, her brother Stephen, her partner Michael, and her family at this sad time. May her gentle soul rest in peace." A minute's silence was observed at a number of games in Clare over the weekend in Ms Tuohy's memory. Mourners flocked to social media to express their sympathies, with one commenting: "Rest in peace Olivia may god comfort you and your your loved ones and Clare footballers." In a wave of solidarity, other football clubs have been showing their support for Olivia and her family. The players at CLG Éire Óg Inis, the Ennis-based Gaelic Athletic Association football club, paid tribute to Olivia with a moment of silence prior to their match on May 29. Tributes were posted on Ms Tuohy's death notice, with one person writing that she was a 'truly wonderful young lady'. It read: 'I had the privilege of going to school with her and playing camogie that I will always treasure. Olivia was a truly wonderful young lady, full of kindness, spirit, and warmth. She always had a smile on her face, and her presence could light up any room." Chelsea accelerate efforts to sign Arsenal & Liverpool target 'in recent hours'
Chelsea have ramped up their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in the last few hours, according to reports in France. Ekitike joined Eintracht on a permanent basis from PSG last summer and the 22-year-old hit new heights across an eye-catching Bundesliga campaign, notching 15 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances. The forward earned himself plenty of admirers with his goalscoring exploits in his first full season in German football and speculation has been mounting that a big-money move could be around the corner. Arsenal and Liverpool have been keeping close tabs on Ekitike's progress and both clubs are believed to have made initial enquiries over a proposed bid for the Frenchman. But according to L'Equipe, Chelsea have attempted to steal a march on their Premier League rivals by accelerating their efforts to sign the attacker 'in recent hours'. The report claims Ekitike is considering his future and mulling over his options after being ruled out of France's European Under-21 Championship campaign this with a back problem. It's understood Eintracht are aware of the strong interest in Ekitike and have responded by slapping a £60million price tag on their prized possession. Ekitike's current contract in Frankfurt runs through to June 2029. Eintracht would be in line to make a significant profit from the sale of Ekitike considering they signed the striker from PSG for a fee of around £14m last summer. In a recent interview with Sport1, Eintracht's sporting director, Markus Krosche, confirmed Ekitike could be allowed to leave if the club's demands are met by a potential suitor. 'He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market,' Krosche said. 'Hugo has to decide that [his future]. I'm glad we have him. 'If he decides otherwise, that's our belief: if a player develops faster than us, then we let him go – as long as our demands are met.' More Trending Chelsea are targeting Ekitike in addition to Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who is set to be announced by the west London giants imminently. Delap has agreed to a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge and joins the Europa Conference League winners for a fee of £30million.
