Disney, NBCU wage war against AI: Midjourney gets slapped with lawsuit
The Walt Disney Co. and NBCUniversal have filed a lawsuit against AI company Midjourney, alleging that the company's image-generating service infringes on their copyrighted works. This legal action, lodged in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, marks the first significant lawsuit studios have initiated against an AI company. The lawsuit accuses Midjourney of functioning as a 'virtual vending machine' for unauthorized copies of copyrighted characters, specifically targeting Disney's and Universal's intellectual properties. The studios claim Midjourney generates high-quality, downloadable images featuring well-known characters like Disney's Darth Vader and NBCUniversal's Minions, in response to simple text prompts from users. These images, the lawsuit argues, are blatant copies, circumventing the need for the studios to invest in their creation. The complaint asserts that Midjourney's actions are a form of piracy, as the service generates copyrighted content without permission. The studios are seeking maximum statutory damages, an accounting of Midjourney's earnings from the alleged infringement, and injunctive relief to prevent further violations. At the heart of the lawsuit is the issue of AI training. Midjourney's use of copyrighted material to train its image-generation model is a contentious issue in the AI industry. The studios suggest that Midjourney's new video service could also be infringing their copyrights, making the matter even more urgent. Horacio Gutierrez, senior executive vice president of Disney, stated, 'Piracy is piracy, and the fact that it's done by an AI company does not make it any less infringing.' NBCUniversal's Kim Harris echoed the sentiment, calling the infringement 'blatant' and stressing the importance of protecting the work of artists and creators. The lawsuit highlights the growing tension between content creators and AI companies, as the Motion Picture Association has argued that existing copyright law should be sufficient to address these issues. However, the studios maintain that Midjourney's practices constitute clear copyright infringement. Representatives for Midjourney have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Super Mario World revealed as title for Mario movie sequel releasing in April 2026
The sequel to Illumination and Nintendo's blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie is officially titled Super Mario World, according to a press release by NBCUniversal outlining its upcoming film slate. The sequel is scheduled for theatrical release on 3 April 2026. Following the first film's commercial success, a sequel was confirmed soon after, though details remained limited until now. An end-credit scene in the 2023 film teased Yoshi's arrival, and NBCUniversal's slate confirms his expanded role in the sequel. As reported by NintendoJam, the title Super Mario World pays homage to the iconic 1990 SNES game, which marked Yoshi's first appearance in the Mario franchise. The title suggests the film may draw heavily from that game, with Yoshi expected to take centre stage. Super Mario World is being produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri alongside Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the original creator of Mario. Returning to direct are Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel once again handling the screenplay. With the title and release date now confirmed, fans can expect more updates as the film moves toward its 2026 premiere.

What Thunderbolts* post-credit scenes reveal about the MCU's future
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts is now playing in theaters and comes packed with two end-credit scenes that push the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into its next chapter. The film unites characters like Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, and US Agent in a dysfunctional antihero squad forced into action by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The mid-credits scene is a comedic moment featuring Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian) admiring a cereal box featuring his likeness. Set in a grocery store, the lighthearted moment plays off earlier dialogue where Alexei longs for admiration and fame, now partially realized through New Avengers merchandise. The final post-credit scene sets up major future Marvel films. Taking place 14 months later, the Thunderbolts are at their new base debating their identity, with Sam Wilson apparently trying to reclaim the Avengers name. Bob, now controlling his Sentry-based powers, remains with the team in a support role. Suddenly, the group is alerted to an unidentified aircraft—revealed to be a ship bearing the iconic '4' logo of the Fantastic Four. The screen then confirms: The New Avengers and Bob will return. This scene directly links to Fantastic Four: First Steps, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. It also teases Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for May 1, 2026, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Victor Von Doom, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. The Thunderbolts' future is now tightly woven into Marvel's evolving multiverse saga.
