Ananda Lewis, Host of MTV's ‘Total Request Live' and ‘Hot Zone,' Dies At 52
Ananda Lewis, one of MTV's first video jockeys and a former host of 'Total Request Live,' 'Hot Zone,' and 'The Ananda Lewis Show,' died on Wednesday of breast cancer. She was 52.
Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, reported her death. TMZ reported that Lewis died in her home in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning.

Lewis revealed in 2020 that she had been diagnosed with stage III breast cancer on her Instagram account, where she spoke about not getting regular mammograms due to her fear of radiation. In a roundtable discussion with CNN in 2024, Lewis confirmed that she did not have a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed that the tumor had metastasized, and that the cancer had progressed to stage IV.
After being hired by MTV in 1997 as one of the new VJs, Lewis became the host of shows like 'Total Request Live' and 'Hot Zone,' where she interviewed rising and established talents for the network. In 2001, she became the host of her own talk show, 'The Ananda Lewis Show,' which ran from 2001 to 2002. She later joined Entertainment Tonight's spinoff 'The Insider' as a correspondent from 2004 to 2005. After taking a break from the industry to pursue carpentry, Lewis returned as the host for the 2019 revival of TLC's 'While You Were Out.'
Born in Los Angeles in 1973, Lewis moved to San Diego shortly after her parents divorced where she lived with her sister, mother, and grandmother. After graduating from Howard University in 1995, Lewis began her career as the host of BET's Teen Summit, a talk show that was hosted by teenagers. After working with BET, Lewis was noticed by MTV and was hired in August of 1997. Shortly after moving to New York, Lewis became one of the main VJs for MTV, hosting shows such as 'Total Request Live,' a daily top ten music video countdown show. Lewis became one of the interviewers for 'Hot Zone,' a series focused on highlighting music videos and exclusive interviews with musicians.
Lewis left MTV in 2001 to pursue her own talk show, 'The Ananda Lewis Show,' which aired on television from 2001 to 2002. In 2004, Lewis joined the cast and crew of 'The Insider,' a nightly program that served as a spinoff to 'Entertainment Tonight,' where she was a host. After leaving 'The Insider,' Lewis became a carpenter and a contractor. In 2019, she became the host of 'While You Were Out,' a TLC reality series.
She is survived by her son, Langston.

Wayne Lewis, founding member of the platinum-selling R&B group Atlantic Starr, has died. He was 68 years old. Lewis died on Thursday, June 5, according to a Facebook post from Atlantic Starr on Friday, June 6. 'It's with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis,' the post reads. 'Please keep the family in your prayers and respect there privacy.' A cause of death was not revealed. Born April 13, 1957, Lewis co-founded Atlantic Starr with his brothers David Lewis and Jonathan Lewis in 1976 in White Plains, New York, according to Billboard. Other early members of the group were Clifford Archer, Sharon Bryant, Porter Carroll Jr., Joseph Phillips, Damon Rentie and William Sudderth. Bryant and Rentie were later replaced by Barbara Weathers and Koran Daniels, respectively. Atlantic Starr signed with A&M Records and released its debut, self-titled album in 1978 followed by their sophomore effort, 'Straight to the Point,' in 1979. The group initially scored several hits on the R&B charts — including 'Stand Up,' 'When Love Calls' and 'Send for Me' — before achieving crossover success. Atlantic Starr's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 was 1982's 'Circles,' which peaked at No. 38. The song also reached No. 2 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Ananda Lewis, the former MTV VJ and talk show host, has died after a six-year battle with breast cancer. She was 52. The Associated Press reported Lewis' death, citing her sister's Facebook announcement shared June 11. "She's free, and in His heavenly arms. Lord, rest her soul," Ananda's sister, Lakshmi Emory, wrote. Lewis' career began as a host on BET's "Teen Summit." She interviewed big names like Kobe Bryant, Tupac Shakur and the first lady at the time, Hillary Clinton, which later earned her an NAACP Image Award, according to The Associated Press. It advanced to Stage 4 last year. "This is tough for me, but if just ONE woman decides to get her mammogram after watching this, what I'm going through will be worth it. PRACTICE EARLY DETECTION. Share this with a woman you love. These 6 minutes could help save her life. I love you guys," Lewis captioned her video at the time. In her video, she noted that she was not getting routine mammograms due to her fear of radiation. Lewis later said doctors recommended a double mastectomy, but she opted for alternative methods. She eventually realized that was the wrong measure, becoming an advocate for being up to date with mammogram checkups. Lewis penned an essay for Essence in January and emphasized that "prevention is the real cure" when it comes to breast cancer. "We're not meant to stay here forever. We come to this life, have experiences — and then we go. "Being real about that with yourself changes how you choose to live. I don't want to spend one more minute than I have to suffering unnecessarily. That, for me, is not the quality of life I'm interested in. When it's time for me to go, I want to be able to look back on my life and say, 'I did that exactly how I wanted to,'" Lewis wrote. After walking away from her talk show, Lewis made appearances as a host on "The Insider," TLC's "While You Were Out," and A&E's "America's Top Dog."
