Asha workers to launch statewide protest march from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, demanding better wages and benefits
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
: The striking ASHA workers have decided to intensify their agitation by launching a statewide protest march beginning from Kasaragod. The 45-day long march will begin on May 5. The decision was taken as the govt was not ready to resolve their strike, which completed 71 days.
Starting from Kasaragod on May 5 and reaching Thiruvananthapuram on June 17, this protest march will be an unprecedented event in the women's labour movement in the state, said the striking ASHA workers.
Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association state general secretary MA Bindu will be the captain of this march. The flag-off of this protest march will coincide with the May Day rally organised in front of the
Secretariat
on May 1.
The protest march will travel through each district for two or three days, sleeping on the streets at night, similar to the ongoing protest in front of the Secretariat.

"We are confident that the public will support this protest march," said the association leaders. Prominent figures from the district and state will participate in reception meetings held in various cities across the 14 districts. After travelling for 45 days, the protest march will reach the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on June 17, where ASHA workers from across the state will join.
Despite 71 days of day-and-night protest and 33 days of indefinite hunger strike by ASHA workers in front of the Secretariat, demanding an increase in honorarium to live without hunger and a retirement benefit, the govt has not budged.
The association leaders alleged that the govt is showing an unprecedented anti-democratic stance towards these poorest female workers.
Even though the public, both inside and outside the state, supports the legitimacy of the ASHA workers' demands, the govt is unwilling to meet these minimum requests. The govt's arrogant and narrow-minded approach to protests challenges the democratic system, they alleged.
In this situation, considering the opinions of the civic society supporting this protest, especially social and cultural activists, we have decided to extend the protest across the state with a night-and-day protest march by ASHA workers, the association leader said.

Los Angeles-area mayors demand that Trump administration stop stepped-up immigration raids
A protester is arrested by California Highway Patrol near the federal building in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Eric Thayer) Dozens of mayors from across the Los Angeles region banded together Wednesday to demand that the Trump administration stop the stepped-up immigration raids that have spread fear across their cities and sparked protests across the U.S. But there were no signs President Donald Trump would heed their pleas. About 500 of the National Guard troops deployed to the Los Angeles protests have been trained to accompany agents on immigration operations, the commander in charge said Wednesday. And while some troops have already gone on such missions, he said it's too early to say if that will continue even after the protests die down. "We are expecting a ramp-up," said Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, noting that protests across the nation were being discussed. "I'm focused right here in LA, what's going on right here. But you know, I think we're, we're very concerned." Hours later, a demonstration in Los Angeles' civic center just before the second night of the city's downtown curfew was set to start, suddenly turned chaotic, as police in riot gear - many on horseback - charged at a group, striking them with wooden rods and pushing them out of a park in front of City Hall. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free Chess. No Ads. Just Fun Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo Officers also fired crowd control projectiles, striking at least one young woman, who writhed in pain on the ground as she bled from her hip. It wasn't clear what initiated the confrontation. Minutes earlier, some protesters had lit fireworks as they approached the federal building, the site of numerous showdowns in recent nights. Simultaneously, a larger portion of the protest were in the middle of a dance party. "It was chill the whole time, it was cool vibes, peaceful protesting," Raymond Martinez said. "Once we got by the federal building the horses started coming." The LA-area mayors and city council members urged Trump to stop using armed military troops alongside immigration agents. "I'm asking you, please listen to me, stop terrorizing our residents," said Brenda Olmos, vice mayor of Paramount, who said she was hit by rubber bullets over the weekend. "You need to stop these raids." Speaking alongside the other mayors at a news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the raids spread fear at the behest of the White House. The city's nightly curfew will remain in effect as long as necessary. It covers a 1-square-mile (2.5-square-kilometer) section of downtown where the protests have been concentrated in the city that encompasses roughly 500 square miles (1,295 square kilometers). "If there are raids that continue, if there are soldiers marching up and down our streets, I would imagine that the curfew will continue," Bass said. Those who have been caught up in the nationwide raids include asylum seekers, people who overstayed their visas and migrants awaiting their day in immigration court. The administration has cited the protests in its decision to deploy the military. California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has asked a federal court to put an emergency stop to the military helping immigration agents in the nation's second-largest city. This week, guardsmen began standing protectively around agents as they carry out arrests. A judge set a hearing for Thursday. The Trump administration called the lawsuit a "crass political stunt endangering American lives" in its official response on Wednesday. The military is now closer to engaging in law enforcement actions such as deportations, as Trump has promised in his crackdown. The Guard has the authority to temporarily detain people who attack officers, but any arrests must be made by law enforcement. The president posted on the Truth Social platform that the city "would be burning to the ground" if he had not sent in the military. Some 2,000 National Guard soldiers are in Los Angeles and are soon to be joined by 2,000 more along with about 700 Marines, Sherman said. Speaking in an interview with The Associated Press and ABC, Sherman initially said National Guard troops had already temporarily detained civilians in the Los Angeles protests over immigration raids. He later said he based his comments on photos and footage he had seen that turned out not to be a representation of Guard members in Los Angeles. LA curfew will continue in downtown Police detained more than 20 people, mostly on curfew violations, on the first night of the curfew and used crowd-control projectiles to break up hundreds of protesters. But officers were more aggressive in controlling demonstrators Wednesday evening and as the curfew took effect, police were beginning to make arrests. Los Angeles police have made nearly 400 arrests and detentions since Saturday, the vast majority of which were for failing to leave the area at the request of law enforcement, according to the police department. There have been a handful of more serious charges, including for assault against police officers and for possession of a Molotov cocktail and a gun. Nine police officers have been hurt, mostly with minor injures. Some were transported to a hospital and released. Protests have spread nationwide Demonstrations have also spread to other cities nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, where thousands rallied and more arrests were made. In New York City, police said they took 86 people into custody during protests in lower Manhattan that lasted into Wednesday morning. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the majority of demonstrators were peaceful. A 66-year-old woman in Chicago was injured when she was struck by a car during downtown protests Tuesday evening, police said. Video showed a car speeding down a street where people were protesting. In Texas, where police in Austin used chemical irritants to disperse several hundred demonstrators Monday, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's office said Texas National Guard troops were "on standby" in areas where demonstrations are planned. Guard members were sent to San Antonio, but Police Chief William McManus said he had not been told how many troops were deployed or their role ahead of planned protests Wednesday night and Saturday. Officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the Texas National Guard was present at a protest downtown. The protests began Friday after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. ___ This story has been corrected. The commander of the troops deployed to Los Angeles initially told the AP that National Guard members had already detained some civilians. He later said his information was incorrect and Guard members have not detained civilians. This story also corrects a quote that was misattributed to Mayor Jessica Ancona of El Monte. It was said by Brenda Olmos, vice mayor of Paramount.

Netanyahu survives opposition bid to dissolve parliament
Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's coalition survived an opposition-backed effort to dissolve parliament on Thursday, as lawmakers rejected a bill that could have paved the way for snap elections . Out of the Knesset's 120 members, 61 voted against the proposal, with 53 in favour. The opposition had introduced the bill hoping to force elections with the help of ultra-Orthodox parties angry at Netanyahu over the contentious issue of conscription for deeply religious Jews. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Toyota 4Runner Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) MorninJoy Undo While the opposition is composed mainly of centrist and leftist groups, ultra-Orthodox parties that are propping up Netanyahu's government had earlier threatened to back the motion. Local media reported Thursday morning however that most ultra-Orthodox lawmakers ultimately agreed not to support the proposal to dissolve the government. Live Events After their failed vote, the opposition will now have to wait six months to submit another bill. Opposition faction leaders had said Wednesday that their decision to bring the bill to the Knesset for a vote was "made unanimously and is binding on all factions". They added that all opposition parties would freeze their lawmaking activities to focus on "the overthrow of the government". Netanyahu's coalition, formed in December 2022, is one of the most right-wing in the country's history. It includes two ultra-Orthodox parties -- Shas and United Torah Judaism (UTJ). The two parties had threatened to back the motion for early elections amid a row over compulsory military service. - 'Existential danger' - Military service is mandatory in Israel but under a ruling that dates to the country's creation -- when the ultra-Orthodox were a very small community -- men who devote themselves full-time to the study of sacred Jewish texts are given a de facto pass. Whether that should change has been a long-running issue. Efforts to scrap the exemption and the resulting blowback have intensified during the nearly 20-month war in Gaza as the military looks for extra manpower. Netanyahu is under pressure from his Likud party to draft more ultra-Orthodox men and impose penalties on dodgers -- a red line for parties such as Shas, who demand a law guaranteeing their members permanent exemption from military service. Ahead of the Thursday morning vote, Israeli media reported that officials from Netanyahu's coalition were holding talks with ultra-Orthodox leaders hoping to find common ground on the issue. In an apparent bid to allow time for those negotiations, Netanyahu's coalition filled the Knesset's agenda with bills to delay the dissolution vote. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Wednesday that bringing down the government during wartime would pose "an existential danger" to Israel's future. "History will not forgive anyone who drags the state of Israel into elections during a war," Smotrich told parliament, adding that there was a "national and security need" for ultra-Orthodox to fight in the military. Netanyahu's government is held together by an alliance between his Likud party, far-right groups and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties, whose departure would mean the end of the government.
